  1. Honestly you couldn't pay me enough to use the Seymour Duncan SPB-1, I had one and couldn't wait to get rid of it, LOTS of bass, no mids, not a great deal of treble.

If I was playing dub reggae I would have loved it but in a rock setting (and by rock I mean classic rock not heavy rock) I got absolutely buried, the SPB-2 on the other hand is a fantastic pickup, not a great deal of treble but lots of mids, decent bass, when I had one I used to run one without a tone pot and got a great sound from it.

Nowadays if I was looking at replacement pickups I would try and get one with as flat a response as possible and shape the tone with EQ but that's just my personal preference.

Just to clarify….you are looking for low profile over-the-ear headphones that receive a signal for use in monitoring and provide some attenuation. Not in ears ((iem’s) or over-the-ear noise defenders that cannot receive a signal.

Sorry I should have responded to this thread, I looked into over the ear headphones but was having issues finding ones that were sufficiently non bulky and with good attenuation, in the end after some research I ended up buying a set of Shure iems that are due to arrive tomorrow, fingers crossed these work for me 🤞

  3. Thanks for the replies, as it is presumably the tips that cause the sound attenuation is it really worth spending a lot on iem headphones or should I focus my money on getting a selection of tips? I have not used iems before so this is so completely new to me.

At the moment am looking at the Shure SE215 and the Sennheiser IE 100 Pro, I briefly considered the Linsoul KZ ZS10's but I found a mention somewhere of them being mid scooped which is a big no no for me.

  4. I'm looking at iems at the moment and is a bit overwhelming especially being a bit neurospicy, can you really get decent sound attenuation from a set of in ears? I was looking at a set of Shure SE215 and it says up to 37db of attenuation,  I am sceptical but hoping I am wrong

Also do you normally get a selection of different size tips? I am a little reluctant to fork out for iems only to find that they don't fit and are letting in a load of outside noise

    Thanks

  5. Hi

I will shortly be moving to using iems for gigs.

As someone with tinnitus I use ear plugs to prevent any more hearing damage and would like a set of headphones that I can use that will attenuate the sound level of outside sounds to a similar level.

Having had a look it looks like drummer headphones is the solution however I see that a lot of these are very bulky, is there anything that is low/low-ish profile that will protect my hearing?

    Thank you

I've bought a set - better be decent at this price

The most expensive strings I had bought previously were a set of LaBella "Jamerson" 1954 flats at around £50 (which seemed ludicrously expensive)

Anyone else ordered a set yet?

    Or, any thoughts?

I will hard pass on any strings that are priced that high, I don't use flats anymore but when I did I wouldn't have paid that.

Thought I’d lower the tone of all these super nice NBDs with a lowly Toby!

Played the perfect Toby Pro in 1996 or so, but couldn’t afford it.  Bought a lovely example from @AndyTravis a while ago, but didn’t gel with it like that one back in the 90’s.

Sort of forgot about this Deluxe I bought off fleabay about 15 years ago.  Leant it to my wife’s cousin years ago, but as he wasn’t using it he returned it to me.

A little bit dusty and unloved, but a quick polish and a tweak of the truss rod has it sorted.  Will need to investigate the electronics as battery that expired 11 years ago had leaked!

Might pull out the preamp and wire it passive, too.  I don’t know loads about actives, so any comment on the at plan are welcome.

Check that the pickups are passive before you take out the preamp, they most likely are but would be awful to take out the preamp to find that you needed it after all

  8. So, I am looking at switching as many of my pedals as possible to mini pedals as my pedal board is becoming too big and weighty.

I now have my chorus pedal and EQ pedals sorted so am now looking for an overdrive pedal, what is out there that has a small footprint but doesn't lose low end?

I would like to keep the cost below £100 but preferably I love a bargain so the more inexpensive the better.

I see there are a lot of of mini overdrive pedals out there but they all seem to be made for guitar.

    Thanks

    PT'S statement:

    "News Flash! Who Backs Zak!

He's not being asked to step down from The Who.

There have been some communication issues, personal and private on all sides, that needed to be dealt with, and these have been aired happily.

Roger and I would like Zak to tighten up his latest evolved drumming style to accommodate our non-orchestral line up and he has readily agreed. I take responsibility for some of the confusion. Our TCT shows at the Royal Albert Hall were a little tricky for me. I thought that four and a half weeks would be enough time to recover completely from having a complete knee replacement. (Why did I ever think I could land on my knees?) Wrong!

Maybe we didn’t put enough time into sound checks, giving us problems on stage. The sound in the centre of the stage is always the most difficult to work with. Roger did nothing wrong but fiddle with his in-ear monitors. Zak made a few mistakes and he has apologised. Albeit with a rubber duck drummer.

We are a family, this blew up very quickly and got too much oxygen. It’s over. We move forward now with optimism and fire in our bellies.

As for Roger, fans can enjoy his forthcoming solo shows with his fabulous drummer, Scott Devours, who it was rumoured might replace Zak in The Who and has always been supportive of the band.

I owe Scott an apology for not crushing that rumour before it spread. He has been hurt by this. I promise to buy him a very long drink and give him a hug.

"Zak made a few mistakes and he has apologised" 🤣 I know they are a professional band but the guy is human like the rest of them, I'm sure the others aren't flawless 100% of the time especially as Roger Daltrey himself has admitted that his hearing has seen better days.

Sounds like maybe they have realised that they were being twats and are now looking to do a u turn in the least embarrassing way possible.

I love Pino's playing but he wasn't the right fit for The Who, both in terms of playing and his tone.  What has since become apparent with Jon Button is that no one can really replace Entwistle.  Button is also a square peg in a round hole IMO.

I haven't heard them with Pino so I can not offer an informed opinion but doesn't Pino use flatwounds? Surely that has to be the polar opposite of what The Who would want for there sound?

  11. So, I got a set of these in medium scale for my Ibanez AGB200, put the strings on and then noticed some buzz on the D string, had a look and the other strings are fine but the D string taper starts between the nut and the 1st fret, either they have packed a short scale string or that is some seriously shoddy quality control.

  12. Am looking at getting a new Chorus pedal and not sure that to get.

I have a Behringer Chorus pedal (ultra chorus) but to my ears it sounds like quite a warm chorus and I am after something a bit more shimmery and icy sounding.

I like the look of the EHX Clone theory but I am a cheapskate when it comes to pedals when I know that they will only be used for a small handful of songs in my bands setlist so am wondering if there is something that can do the job for less money.

I know Joyo have a few chorus pedals but I have found very little online about how they sound on bass

    Thanks

I've been doing that for years. Big sound.

Billy Sheehan Deluxe with a Boss CE5 in the drive loop... bang that through a Clone Theory. I sometimes throw in a MXR Flanger as well for a laugh.

Cool, how is the clone theory? I love Joy Division and I love Peter Hook's bass tone so have been considering getting a clone theory.

Yeah those Rotos are like solid pieces of metal draped along the fretboard, a real workout. Can sound great, though I’ve never managed it (think they need a valve amp to get them to shine).

Yes, I emailed Rotosound to suggest maybe they should also have them available in a lighter gauge than 100-40, they responded and politely said it wasn't something they were considering doing, shame as they do have a nice unique tone to them but they are just too stiff.

  15. Hi

I have recently brought an Ibanez AGB200 Ibanez AGB200 and is a lovely bass but I cannot find a hardcase for it.

I have emailed Gear4music and Andertons and they have said that the specific Ibanez case is not available to the UK and they do not know which other cases will fit.

Hoping someone here can advise on a hardcase that will fit, as this bass will be loaded into a van for gigs it has to be a hardcase

Thank you in advance for any suggestions/help with this
