1. As above, my teacher had a play with them on Friday evenings lesson, whilst not orchestral quality sound he was more than happy that they were up to my standard - I think that is a positive comment!!!!!
2. Thanks for the replies, gives me an excuse to have a play and experiment......
3. I have the J tone rockabilly pick up with one slide in mounting on the bridge (easy to fit no work required) and a fingerboard pickup for the "click" all through a cheap bass amp, easy cheap and effective. 4. I have an old Model 97 pre amp sitting on top of my bass amp linked by a short patch cable to the amp. As I am new to all things Bass upon looking around most pre amps are either mounted on the bass itself or on a pedal board nearby. Is there a reason for this? or is it just preference, it seemed easier for me to have it with the amp rather than hanging onto the bass or getting kicked around the floor. here are no adjustments I nee to make when playing so for me the actual location is not important. Common sense says it shouldn't make a difference but thought I would ask.
5. That would be a great help I will PM an email addy..... Your a star
6. tinyd, that's a great help thank you, as a beginner it is quite daunting to actually play a song, in time, in tune and with other musicians, also not having any sheet music (Not even the WWW could produce a free download) its is hard to know where to start. In at the deep end I guess, Many thanks S.
7. Ok I heard back from the band with the song suggestions below, anyone point me to some sheet music that I can start practicing with!!!!!! Anything? Folsom prison blues by Johnny Cash, we do this song in the key of A. It's a straightforward country rhythm root note and fifth and a standard 1,4,5 or (A,D,E) cord progression . Then I thought we could go into shake rattle and roll which we do in the key of C. This one is a little more challenging as it's a swing Beat with a walking bassline. It's still a 1,4,5 (C,F,G) cord progression.
8. Ian WILSON but not aware of his connections on here.
9. I am guessing some simple root & 5th in the key of the songs will save face for me!
10. Ok here the issue, I am a new UB player I take lessons regularly and practice when I can, I have now fitted my silver slaps to replace the orchestral strings that were originally on. My good lady has booked a rockabilly band to play at our wedding at the end of may The Houndogs Official Website - Best Rock n Roll and Rockabilly Band in the UK! : Hound Dogs I have been invited by the band to do a couple of numbers with them and will be arranging a couple of days away to learn a couple of their songs. However as I said I am new to the UB, can anyone recommend a simple bass line or reference that I can learn in the mean time, trying to learn to slap in a couple of months is a tall order I know but a simple base line with some basic slaps and a lot of practice may just stop me making a fool of myself.......... All advice welcome.
11. Had a chat with my teacher and we have arranged to spend the next couple of months on Pizz and left hand so I put the silvers on, now just need to learn that right hand technique, on top of learning my left, reading the bass clef, guess the arco will wait a while.......
12. Thanks for all the input, I have been recommended Evah Pirazzi Bass Weich (Soft) Set of Strings as perhaps the best all rounders' are these a starting point?
13. My teacher is doing well with an ageing novice, he is concentrating on my tone and intonation and bowing is very good for this. I much prefer pizz and eventually slapping but follow his sound teaching on the cheap steel orchestral strings currently fitted to my bass. I have a set of Silver slaps ready to go, but if I put them on for pizz and slap practice will I still be able to Arco when required. There are differing reports on the web, the sales buff says you can bow them (but they would say that) So has anyone used them for arco or am stuck with the high tension steels until I finish my initial leanings, this will prevent me from practicing slap as the steels are way to tight, ok for pizz and arco though hence my quandary. I am not looking for orchestral quality with my bowing technique but I have no whish to make it worse. lol. Stuart
14. Simple project for your local woodturner, a nice hardwood stopper!
