  1. As said above there must be loads of different ways. Being new to all this stuff I don't have a great deal of experience and our band is made up of work mates. The advantage of knowing the people beforehand is that there isn't the issue of personality clashes as much. We know each other anyway and get on well to the camaraderie is there already. I am lucky in that I work somewhere that there is a pool of talented musicians (I do not include myself in that group) and I appreciate it won't work for most people, but knowing your band mates well seems a good way to do it if you can.

  2. It's arrived safely and I have had a chance to unpack and have a quick play. First impressions are very very good indeed. It's a budget bass by any means but does not feel that at all. The finish is superb on the main body and the neck is finished in a satin effect. I prefer a gloss neck but the satin finish is well applied, looks good and more importantly feels nice when you are playing. All the fixtures are of decent, if not premium, quality as you would expect. Only the knobs have a feel of being a bit 'cheap'. Overall the build quality compares very well with other makers I could mention.

Once plugged in the real surprise arrives, I expected it to sound good as the reviews I have read are all positive but I have to admit I am amazed by the sound on a bass of this price. The separate volume controls for the pickups and a tone control allow a great variety control over the sound. I am not a fan of the twin pick up volume controls, but that is a personal thing - I prefer a master volume and a mixer control. The sound is deep and rich and the sustain matches my full scales.

Overall I would give it 9.5/10 with only the slightly cheap knobs letting it down, but at the price I can more than forgive that.

  3. Does it have an internal fuse? Most amps do and they tend to be in the range of 1-5 amps (most are 1-3A it seems from when I wa searching when I had a problem with mine). If you can find the rating of that one put the next available size up in the main plug.

  4. And bought an Ibanez TMB30. I fancy a play with a shortscale electric and every review I could find seemed to rate them very highly. Sadly they seem to be out of stock in every shop within 100miles of me so had to go mail order. Time will tell if the reviews are accurate.........

And it won't break the bank either, so there's really no reason not to try it. :)

Could a worn out preamp tube cause such a lack of vitality in this particular circuit? I really don't have a clue...

I have a Marshall combo with the valve/ solid state mix and mine sounds superb, I know of another which sounded very flat compared to mine. It turned out it had a modern cheap valve in. The owner bought a NOS valve from the 70s and it sounded much much better. I don't know the ins and outs of exactly how the elastic trickery works but it was obvious to anyone how much difference the quality of the valve made.

Ha ha, good man Mark, many thanks. This could go on and on!

I've had a couple of PMs from folks saying they'd like to have it as a raffle prize at upcoming bashes, but it worries me that on that basis it could end up only pulling in a few quid, and going to a BCer who'll probably end up selling it here again! To be honest I'd prefer it to go directly to a good cause rather than indirectly, I just like the idea of a needly kid somewhere having the bass, hope that makes sense?

PM sent, I know somewhere it would have a good home if it fits your criteria.

  7. I have been learning Johnny B Goode this last week, a bit odd as we mostly play 70-90s punk/ hard rock but we are dropping it in for a charity gig we are doing in three weeks (opening for a ladies choir average age 70+ - don't ask) as we think there may well be a few veterans in the crowd. It's not something I listened to personally and if I am honest I didn't like the idea at first when it was mentioned but I am really enjoying playing it. As said above, there is a lot more challenge to it than first impressions would suggest and getting it spot on takes more time than you would think.

  8. Another vote for the Roland microcube series. I have one of the smallest ones on loan from a mate after I repaired it for him (batteries had leaked) and I am amazed by the sound of it for such a small package. I want one even though I have no real use for it.

Playing in a Creedence Clearwater Revival tribute, I like Hey Tonight.

We have started playing a heavy version of Dark Moon Rising which I love (but the bass.ine is a bit boring).

But my favourite is Teenage kicks which is odd in a way as despite being a massive fan of punk stuff I was never that big a fan of the Undertones. It's just great to play full blast and we mix it up a bit as well.
