I'm delighted to say that Chris at Smooth Hound went the extra mile and a half to sort this for me and it now works brilliantly with my Zoom. I don't know what he did, but I'm glad that he did it.

Absolutely first class customer service and a first class product.

Does anyone know what the solution on this is? Just updated my pedal board and ended up using a 2m cable as the noise was horrendous, never had a problem before. The smooth hound is presently next to the zoom on the board so I could shift things around a bit but would probably only get a 15-20cm separation maximum.

I can't speak for UK functions bands. In the States if your an adult looking at joining a functions band to make money you'd have to your own car. It's a must.

The USA is somewhat larger than the UK, my brother thinks a long drive is from Boston to Tucson and anything less than a day's drive is 'close', over here anything more than a couple of hours drive is 'far away'.

  3. I am 100% sure that there is basic talent in many things, music being one of them. I help out with a club for people learning guitar and bass and there is a distinct range in abilities. Some kids you can show them once and they are off, others you feel will have to try for a month before even basic stuff goes in. Time and experience does help, I am still new to the whole thing really and and on that nice part where I have enough ability to play in a band but still feel I am learning quickly, but it does take a lot of time and effort. I do worry slightly that a lot of kids want instant computer game type satisfaction and if they can't be shredding a tune out whilst sliding on their knees after twenty minutes they lose interest. But perhaps it was always like that.

  4. I have looked into these and they can be made into a decent enough bass but do require work (and probably new electrics). The cheap Harley Bentons get very good reviews on a thread on here (I haven't tried one personally) and if they have a screw on neck would be a possibility. I have just bought an Ibanez tmb30 and it is fantastic, a bit more expensive at £165 but you have something worth having at the end of it.

Oh way ahead of you on this... Functionally, it works surprisingly well in winter, within reason - providing the radiator is working and my wife doesn't have friends round.

In summer, the leather seat cover just gets too, well... 'claggy'

    Hence underpants uber alles.

If you want to get some authenticity, go to Youtube and listen to Amos Milburn and Big Joe Turner from the 40s. These guys were rock n roll long before Haley, Presley etc, but they were black so they never got mainstream radio play. Presley and Haley both stole their songs and pretty much copied them exactly. Fats Domino played rock n roll in the late 40s also. The term "rock n roll" is attributed largely to a white DJ called Alan Freed about 1954 or 55, but the black guys had that term in 1946. It's in the lyrics of Boogie Woogie Country Girl by Big Joe Turner.

Didn't the stones cover an Amos Milburn song? Can't remember the name but it will come to me...........

  7. As said above there must be loads of different ways. Being new to all this stuff I don't have a great deal of experience and our band is made up of work mates. The advantage of knowing the people beforehand is that there isn't the issue of personality clashes as much. We know each other anyway and get on well to the camaraderie is there already. I am lucky in that I work somewhere that there is a pool of talented musicians (I do not include myself in that group) and I appreciate it won't work for most people, but knowing your band mates well seems a good way to do it if you can.

  8. It's arrived safely and I have had a chance to unpack and have a quick play. First impressions are very very good indeed. It's a budget bass by any means but does not feel that at all. The finish is superb on the main body and the neck is finished in a satin effect. I prefer a gloss neck but the satin finish is well applied, looks good and more importantly feels nice when you are playing. All the fixtures are of decent, if not premium, quality as you would expect. Only the knobs have a feel of being a bit 'cheap'. Overall the build quality compares very well with other makers I could mention.

Once plugged in the real surprise arrives, I expected it to sound good as the reviews I have read are all positive but I have to admit I am amazed by the sound on a bass of this price. The separate volume controls for the pickups and a tone control allow a great variety control over the sound. I am not a fan of the twin pick up volume controls, but that is a personal thing - I prefer a master volume and a mixer control. The sound is deep and rich and the sustain matches my full scales.

Overall I would give it 9.5/10 with only the slightly cheap knobs letting it down, but at the price I can more than forgive that.
