  1. top man, great to deal with.
I have a thumper and love it.If your after the high output type Andy does the stealth 51 which I would love to try. I ,m more than happy with thumper which really does cut through the mix.
Give Andy a phone and he will sort you out and you,ll get a cracking conversation as well, worth it for that alone.

  2. hiho,I hope I can help here.I have a v4 p-bass copy that was good as standard,I got this to play in pubs.
I liked it as standard so I wondered if it could be better and save me the cost of the real thing ,the upgrading started -a set of schaller tuners, wizard thumper pick up,badass copy bridge with the intention of fitting the real thing but I,m more than happy with the results.
I have in the past played a lot of fenders that never sounded as good.
With the thumper fitted I can roll of a bit on the volume and the tone and get loadsa sounds, very high output-14k on the meter.I am however thinking of fitting a stealth 51 from Andy at wizard.A drop D tuner would make this a real cracker.
For the price there is no worries, pity they don,t do a black one with a maple neck.
    Hope this helps

  3. hiho,it seems that all the problems are cab/speaker related as I use the head I,ve had no problems at all.I do use peavey cabs though, maybe not the best sounding but bullet proof, nuclear proof, heavy and just keep going-luckilly you can turn the tweeters off.
The muddy reference is to me a low mid heavyness to the sound that is old school sound on the classic channel,ie not scooped like a lot of the modern amps.
The upshot is that most of us will never get the ideal sound in our heads but when you play live the sound in the mix is the most important thing.I,ve heard cracking bass sounds on a song in the studio and when you hear it soloed it sounds terrible, this applies to guitars as well and I wish guitarists would take heed of this one and stop drowning everything out with their all frequencies big guitar solo sound.
I feel better for that little rant.
    all the best

  4. hiho,I run 2 Peavey TX 2x10 cabs at 4 ohm each through a marshall mb450 .
Yes they are heavy but they are bullet proof.Typical Peavey, built to last in the harsh world of gigging.
The TX cabs have so much bottom that a 15 is not needed and being 2x10 they make a versitile rig,ie one cab or two depending on the size of gig and easier to lug although it means an extra run or a pair of helping hands if you have considerate band members.
There is the added bonus if one does die you have the other generally still working, slight decrease in volume but your still up and running.

  5. hiho, you could go the sansamp/behringer clone route or use a hartke bass attack or a mxr di 80 as these have pre amp control on the di side which is useful for di to a PA or for DI recording-amp in a small box.Very useful if your amp goes bottom up during or before a gig.If you have the vitamins for it do away with the amp when gigging and go direct to the PA and get a bit of bass in your monitor.
If you are hooked up to a PA your amp is generally used for on stage monitoring.Travelling light is good.
Mind you a big rig flapping your legs is good.

  6. RE-amp running hot,I had this when I used heavier wire for the speaker cables and I could smell it.
I went back to the original cables and has been running perfect ever since and cool.
For the price plenty of beef, not hi-fi sound but perfect for a gig in the mix when you run down to 2 ohm and max power.

  7. hiho,I ,ve got one as well and put a wizard thumper in it ,a set of schaller tuners and a copy badass bridge and it the mutts nuts. All done second hand on fleabag for the grand outlay of under a hundred quid.Quality .
The only gripe I have is I would prefer a maple neck, can,t say fairer than that.

  8. hiho, this might sound daft but you seem to be happy with your p-bass and your forever havin to eq your amp.
Might I suggest that 300 quid might be better spent on gettin a good amp set up ?.Just a thought ,it can make a serious difference.A good pre amp can be a good investment as well.
I,m goin to get shot down in flames here but here goes, try a behringer bdi21 s/h they are cheap and if you don,t like it not much lost but will transform your sound and if you like the direction it,s going then sansamp, hartke bass attack, mxr di80 and others are worth considering and you can use them as a DI box for PA and recording. You also have the option of goin ampless through a PA,no more heavy lifting.
I know it will not satisfy the GAS but worth considering.

  9. hiho,I,ve noticed that nobody has mentioned pick up height.I found this to be a part of the ricky sound jigsaw.Be prepared to balance the two pups to your taste. They can start to distort if you get them too high, not a problem with the neck pup as you cant get it as high as the bridge and a lot of people set the bridge pup too high in relation to the neck pup.I think balance is the word I,m looking for.Just a thought that might help someone.

  10. hiho,I have a db700 as well and you can get a powered extension cab for it from roland or get a db900.you could use the powered extension as a side fill so you and the drummer can hear it.They are great amps and have a very good sound, love mine to bits.If I,m stuck for volume then I dig out a marshall mb450 head and 2 peavey 2x10s at 4ohms and run the marshall at 2ohm total and belt out 450 watt which is seriously loud and shakes the world.
Roland do a 15" version and a 4x10 version of the powered extension.i have considered this option and I,m waiting for one to come up at reasonable price.hope this helps.

  11. hiho,I agree with the hipshot I have one fitted and well worth it.pick ups -give andy at wizard a shout and he will sort you out.you could darkstar it,never done it myself but I,m sure someone will chime in.Rick pups will give you a ricky sound.pickgaurdian have a loyal following and should be cheaper than standard parts.Truss rod cover if you need one could be a problem as RIC keep them very close to themselves. You have to return your original to them or half of it to get a replacement.I wish I had bought a black one years ago when they were available to go with my black scratchplate but that option has been put on hold cause it,s too much hassle sending them off to get changed back n forward if you fancy a change.Schallers are out there if you what model number they are and are excellent, put a set on my beater P-bass and it stays in tune perfectly.
keep us all informed of your progress and best of.

  12. hiho,Just thought I,d let you all know that a company on e-bay is advertising a precision pick up under the thumper name that is not a Wizard Thumper. It has a value of 8.04k and a thumper is 14k.I have made Andy at Wizard aware of this so I hope nobody gets misled by this product.

  13. hiho ,I use 2 2x10" tx cabs ,easier to lug around and a serous amount of bottom end,no need for a 15".
I use a marshall mb450 head and can use one cab for 300 watt at 4 ohm or unleash the whole 450 with both cabs at 2 ohm which makes things versitile and easier than lifting a 4x10".Great sound, nice price, bullet proof build.

  14. hiho, spooky.I,m glad someone else has noticed ashdowns sound going off as I noticed this years ago when I had one.
I don,t have the combo but I do have the mb450 head paired with peavey cabs and once I got a core setting it,s leave alone and dig in.
I have heard that the cabs are a bit dicey so the solution might be to get older cabs s/h.
I thought about getting a 15" cab but my 10"s have more than enough bottom end, would like to try a 4 x 12" though but lugging it around would be another story.

  15. hiho,I don,t think you.ll sell it as it will grow on you.Since I,ve put the wizard in I,ve been able to use the volume and tone controls to full effect and it makes it very versitile.
The high output of the thumper makes it almost like an active at everything on full just like my musicman but not the same, roll back a bit and the character changes in a very good way.Anyone who has fitted one will know what I mean.
The only complaint I have is that they don,t do a maple neck, can,t say fairer than that.
I have played for a while(not saying how long) and have a ricky, musicman and the vintage and I would have no hesitation in recommending one,the pup change is worthwhile and a call to Andy at wizard will get you the sound you want if you decide to go that route. All in all a perfect gigging bass as it,s not the end of the world if it gets some battle scars.

  16. hiho,I picked up a v4 s/h for a pittance and it is great.I have fitted a wizard thumper and schaller tuners. My next mod is a gotoh bridge.
As standard it was good to go and as you say it is nice and light but with the thumper it become an animal in the nicest way.
Well worth the money especially s/h.
The reason I got is was I was going to do this to a precision anyway so I saved a few quid in the process.
A good gigging bass with no worries as standard.

  17. hiho,I use a mb450 head and 2 2x10 cabs ,4 ohm each and it is massive. The only problem I had was a microphonic pre amp valve(ecc 83) replaced this with one from a marshall geetar amp and away we go.I would like to stick a 4x12 on it with a 2x10 but it,s a lot easier to move 2 2x10,s than a 4x12 or a 4x10.
modern channel is very clean.classic channel is classic, loadsa thump and volume.
    hope this helps

  18. hiho,to get a black one you have to return at least half of your original one to rickenbacker.
I would recomend a hipshot bridge, east to fit ,makes adjustments easy and looks good as well.
soundwise I think it is an improvement, makes palm muting comforable without those grub screws tearing your palms off.
