It undoubtedly makes a significant contribution, but seeing as passive Wal's reportedly also have the same characteristic 'core tone', I believe the pickups (and how they are wired?) make an equal or possibly even greater contribution.

The passive Wals i have played Sound nothing like the active ones I have played. YMMV

I can’t decide what I like most about that horror. Is it the extra peg aimlessly plonked on the top of the headstock in such a similar shade to the other pegs that you’d never know it was added or the practically invisible neck shim?

My favourite part is that the B string completely avoids the entire length of the fretboard!

  3. For sale is my 1986 Wal MkII Fretless 5 string. This bass was built in 1986 by the legendary Pete "the fish" Stevens it features gorgeous African Shedua facings over a mahogany core and chrome hardware. The bass is all original except for the strings and it functions perfectly including the hardware, electronics and the truss rod.The fretboard is perfect and the bass has just been setup with a brand new set of Ernie Ball flats.
    Weight is 5,25KG / 11,57lbs
Despite the fact that this bass is 38 years old it is in near perfect condition. There are some very minor signs of wear as you would expect. However I would be very confident in saying that you are very unlikely to find another bass of this vintage in as good a condition as this bass. I have made an effort to provide photos from as many angles as possible so you can clearly see exactly what you are buying. I believe that my perfect feedback is a great reflection of the honesty and thoroughness of my descriptions.
This sale includes the original Wal hardcase - the case is functional and is in fair condition but shows plenty of signs of wear.
If you have any questions please let me know.

    Price is 7275GBP or 8500€

Shipping to UK and within the EU is is 225€ - fully tracked and insured with UPS

i cant believe their are people actually defending letts on TB

There was only one person, who without reading the whole thread, blamed Eddie rather than blaming Jon.

So no, there are not "people actually defending letts on TB".

Binky, you could well be right on that, I know you've certainly got enough solid experience to base your reply on.👍

As per his request I've emailed him this evening with a proposal for an instrument that would bring matters to a close. The proposed costs come in under the outstanding amount and isn't demanding an Alembic or Ritter level of luthiery, but it would fulfil the needs I have for an instrument now, and is in my opinion extremely reasonable.
I can list a cost breakdown later if needs be and I'll retain the email just in case, but the ball is now in his court, and it's down to whether he wants to follow exactly the specs I require, or doesn't.

Glutton for punishment springs to minds. The Ball has been in Jons court for 10 years and now you are prolonging your own agony.

You seem to have ignored all that has been said here and on TB warning you away from Jon - not just as someone who is untrustworthy, but also someone who has questionable skills to build a fully functioning bass, nevermind what would happen if you need after sales support.

As for following your specs, you have chastised Jon previously for his inability to follow your specs. Now you expect that to suddenly change?

Call me what you like, but I have absolutely zero sympathy with the ‘builder’.

@EddieG has been far more accommodating than I would have over this debt.

Letts can give all the excuses he likes, but nothing excuses the fact that he has not started any sort of repayment plan.

Even a couple of £’s a week/month would be a start and that’s if you buy into the fact that he is a skint as he says he is. I don’t.

He’s in business selling and shipping basses on Reverb as well as posting videos on You Tube. Some videos have thousands of watch numbers on them. Given they are original content, is this enough that the videos are monetised? I’d imagine that would be the only reason he does it, because some of the content is just awful.

Regarding the Youtube Videos - if Letts was ACTUALLY sorry for ripping off his customers and actually wanted to set matters right, instead of wasting time creating, editing and uploading YT content, he would go and get a part time job in order to repay his debts.

The man has no morals and should not be trusted or given any Business by anyone.

  7. awesome bass - I have one in a natural finish. These basses have that famous Spector tone in spades!

The SSD logo and Stuart Spector Design Ltd. written on the truss rod cover would suggest this is from 1995-1996.

The 96 Spector catalogue shows the same bass featuring the Spector logo on the headstock and Spector written on the TRC.

I could be wrong though as I am not an expert by any means.

  9. quick update...
I am impatient and had too much time on my hands yesterday so I went with option 1b:
shave off a few millimeters from the flat edge to again reveal more thread...

So i got out my vice and dremel and cut 2mm of the flat edge of the anchor block. I also cut a couple mill off the barrel nut as well as the end of it actually protrudes past where the thread starts.
The thread looke fine inside the barrel nut and I tested it with an M5 bolt to make sure - all good.
I applied some machine grease to the end of the truss rod before reseating the anchor block - there was now a good deal more rod visible. I reattached the barrel nut and it went on to the rod easily and firmly.

The good news is that the truss rod is now fully functional and the relief at the 7th fret is no longer several mill but rather 0,015" or 0,38mm

    Yay me!

  10. Hi guys and gals, so I just picked up my first Spector Euro yesterday. I didnt have a chance to play it before I bought it but I gave it the once over and everything looked good. It is in amazing condition with barely a mark on it, electronics and in fact the entire bass are all original and in good working order. The truss rod appeared to adjust without any issue...

When I got it home I gave it a thorough clean, oiled the fretboard and put some new strings on it. Plugged it in and was immediately smitten with that famous Spector tone.

I wasnt so happy with the setup though as there was too much relief for my liking. I set about tightening the truss rod. Everything seemed fine until all of a sudden the adjustments went from quite difficult to make to very easy. It was then that I realised that the barrel nut had come off the truss rod! I check the barrel nut with a bolt to make sure I have been tightening it the correct way(CW) and indeed I had.

I still have no idead what actually happened but the bottom line is this - the barrel nut would not go back on the end of the truss rod regardless of what I tried.

I had a look with a torch at the truss rod and it looked to be a removable type so while holding the bass upside down I gave it a few gentle knocks along the fretboard with a rubber mallet to see if that would help shift the truss rod(I have used this technique succesfully with Warwick basses that needed the truss rod replacing).

The truss rod didnt shift but a small from it fell out - see the first picture. This allowed me then to try the barrel nut again and it was able to mate again with the thread on the end of the truss rod.

So my question is this - what is the best way to proceed:

    1. The block that fell out seems to be blocking the barrel nut from mating with the thread on the truss rod - do I therefore;

    a. need to reinsert it and give it a few good whacks to ensure it is properly seated - hopefully in the process revealing more thread for the barrel nut to mate with or

    b. shave off a few millimeters from the flat edge to again reveal more thread...

    2. remove the whole truss rod and replace it with a new one - does anyone know if this is even possible or if I would need to get a luthier to do this by removing the fretboard?

FYI the bass appears to be an early 90's Spector Euro as it has the SSD Logo and Stuart Spector Design on the truss rod cover. It has a 4 digit serial number inside the electronics cavity, EMG pups, EMG BTS circuit and solid brass bridge and nut with Schaller machineheads.
