    That's great advice, thank you!

The keyboard stand to the left of the bass is its usual resting place, à la BassBar. I need to move some furniture to find a corner! 😅

The Hercules bass stand is my favourite and you can often get them cheaply on eBay.

I estimate you’ll be out gigging in a few months when word gets around…

Too right...leant mine against a wall in a pub last week, while setting up for a gig.  Now there's a £3000 bill to mend the neck that cracked when it fell forward, hitting its peg box on a table.

    Good job it was insured.

    So sorry to hear this.

I noticed a strange vibration from the E and B saddles yesterday. I was really tired and in a lot of pain so I put the bass away.
I tried a fresh E string today and it was the same.
Very annoying on a bass of the price. I noticed the saddle was very slightly higher one side than the other so I levelled them both and it seems to have fixed it most of the time.
Anyone else had this issue with this bass or bass fitted with this bridge please? If so what is the fix?

    thanks.

I had an issue on  Fender where I got a rattle from the G string. The reason was that the saddle wasn’t compressing the spring and the spring would make a sound. Easy fix once identified (and not Fenders fault!)

Because it is based on small numbers. A graph like that works well if you are selling a lot of things, current fender P basses etc, but if you are only selling a small number and the value of those things is based on hugely intangible things such as appearance and perceived authenticity, it is fairly useless.

It also doesn’t take into account variations. A custom colour instrument will be worth more than a refin, for example.

What’s interesting is that Andy Baxter has the best collection of vintage basses I’ve ever seen, but there’s barely any turnover.

That’s more significant than the graph here.

I know what you mean, though the body refin gives it an air of newness. Many years ago you could get player grade basses that were priced accordingly, and were more than worth a go. Not sure what this was priced at.

That’s not great re. the vintage truss rod. I’ve had a couple of challenges with instruments bought from well-known dealers over the years, having to send the instruments back. Even being a ‘give people the benefit of the doubt’ kinda chap, each time really stretched my patience.

    yeah it’s a shame.

The 60s one here has some red flags. Refinishes can hide all manner of previous horrors, wrong decal applied, inconsistent dates between parts. (Hung around the shop floor? BS)

Theres no guarantee its anything like what somebody says it is unless it’s supported by rock solid provenance.

If we start considering guitars as antiques or pieces of art, this will become more important.

I missed this on Will’s site when it was listed - don’t think it hung around for long.

    Not sure of the price?

Not sure about that one. There are too many inconsistencies, parts look too nice,

I recently picked up a vintage bass from a well known retailer. Fitted new strings and tried to adjust the truss rod and it’s seized. Finished with vintage and instead gone for Vintera for something that actually works. (Old one off for a refund)

  7. Looks cool. Never lean it against the wall balanced against the neck though, it’s a receipt for disaster. Find a corner (preferably one away from a radiator!) and place if there.

    I'm with you on that.

Although Mrs. Pook is very averse to me selling any....I think she would feel need to sell some of her many many bikes if I pruned my basses :)

I hate selling them when you have to send them. That’s one reason for not buying too many.

  9. I have the one I won’t sell, rbe one I gig with and a backup. Any more than that is superfluous.

I’ve had rooms full of them before and it was ultimately pointless. So I keep the main 3.

I recently bought a vintage Burns bass for £100 (worth about £1500) and the guy told me I had to keep it and play it not sell it on to make money.

So I’ve abided by that. I’ve also bought a new vintage bass so currently have 5.

You can get one in Japan in the mid 80's 😵‍💫

Seriously though, try Ishibashi's u-box, ebay Japan, that kind of thing. This doesn't look like anything which has been in production in the last 35 years. They look like Aria pickups alright, though I've never seen that model before. The bridge saddles look Aria too.

yeah it’s definitely an Aria but without the name I don’t know what to search for!

It’s one to add to the ‘wants’ pile. I’m not going to pay a premium for it, but I’ll file it in the same box as Burns Flyte.

Facebook marketplace seems to bring out the worst in people.

Just this weekend, I ended up staying in for a buyer that never turned up, no response to messages even though they'd been hassling for about a week with loads of silly questions and to arrange the collection time. I'd put off other buyers and changed weekend plans. I just can't fathom what's going through their heads to be such time wasters and so inconsiderate.

once a buyer asked me to deliver an item (giant bean bag!). I put it in the car and drove to their flat. I rang the bell and…. They switched the lights off, closed the curtains and pretended they weren’t there.

It was actually quite funny. What was less funny was the guy messaging me again asking for details and if he could pick it up.

    People are genuinely mad.

In the 20 + years of selling instruments ive never received the shit that ive just received on Face Book. Im selling a Mono M80 bag that is in great condition . The inner cable pocket thing has come away stitching wise. I started by selling it at £120, which was probably optimistic. I got comments like "set it on fire".. "Way over priced" etc.. I have never ever got this on Bass Chat.. If its over priced make me an offer. Me and my wife are really struggling financially which I didnt mention, in hindsight maybe I should have. I dropped the price to £90.. But no, still overpriced."could I stitch it myself"

I would bet some of these darlings are on Bass Chat... I just dont get the outright destroying of someones for sale advert. Just PM me about a price. It is literal out and out vitriol. I will say I was so pissed off I sent some messages that were not very polite, unfortunately I have a temper. Why though I just dont get it. This would never happen on BC.

People don’t understand the emotions going on here. I think that people can be very cruel at times without realising it.

When I’ve seen things that are advertised incorrectly, I’ve messaged the seller to point this out politely.

Hope things get better for you and your wife.

I think he probably does all right for himself and he strikes me as a very accomplished musician.

He’s recently released an album of his own compositions.

Given its primarily bass-led it’s hardly going to be a big seller, is it?

The YouTube videos probably pay for him to go that. All power to him!

Just my own opinion, but isn’t Mr Berthould, genius technician as he may be, a self-promoting PITA and the antithesis of what bands actually need in a bass player?

He’s a new type of musician/artist that makes money with videos online. It baffles me that people would spend their time watching this stuff but people do - and it’s highly lucrative (apparently).

I think it supports his musical career, which is cool.
