  1. Good advice ......... I like my Sandberg, but it has a specific "sound"  great to play and rock solid in terms of gigging - in terms of a Jazz I was thinking of a pretty skinny neck AND a classic Jazz sound (if that's really "a thing") - the Silver Series and my Sandberg are pretty much the same neck width and both nice to play but not "jazz skinny".    Having said that, the Electras are skinnier than the german Sandbergs I think .......  Ummmmm ........

Sandberg Electra TTs are nice basses, great neck.  Also, and if you can find one, the much underrated Squier Silver Series basses.  Made in Japan and very decent instruments indeed.

    Thanks Alain,

You might recognize this (one of your "old" P's) - although I've swapped the pickguard and tweaked it a little!  It's very nice!

Couple of questions if I may .....
Are the Silver Series Jazz's a skinny neck profile do you know? (62 spec??)
How do the Electra's sound vs a typical Fender Jazz?

    Cheers Ian

  3. Hey Ho ..........
If I stick too my budget I guess that leaves me on the second hand Fender Player,  or if I'm really lucky a 90's MIJ, a Sire (of some description, new or used),  a Squire or a G&L?
If not for the weight the Sire would probably be the likely winner methinks ......
Anyone able to comment on how one of the Bass Centre Jive Basses (or Betsy) stack up in this context??
    Thanks for all the ideas.

Could any users of the Zoom H4 give a few hints on how they have theirs set up, the instructions aren't the best.  I'm trying to to get stereo from the built in mikes and mix it with a mono input from my bass. So far I have only managed to get stereo mikes with bass in one ear, so need to switch the bass input to mono is my guess ...

I'm sure I'll get there in the end anyway but any hints appreciated!

I use the Stereo channel at live gigs.
If the "Recording Input"  is ABOVE 0.5 to 1.0 the output distorts and the Red LED flickers.
The unit is "top of head height" on Mic Stand towards the front mid right of the stage.
To minimise additional wires on stage, I do not add anything else into the unit -  I just take the headphone out via a very long 3.5mm jack to jack to a little mixer by my feet. (cable adapter at mixer end to a stereo channel.)
I power the unit from a Battery Powerpack at the base of the Mic Stand. (lasts for several gigs).

I use the H4N via a small mixer which also accepts my bass - at least this is by my feet so I can adjust the mix to my wireless IEM's.

Our live gigs don't provide the luxury of set-up/sound check in an empty room, prior to kick off.  It's set up, make sure it's all working and there's no feedback, and do a sound check number just prior to our first number and hope for the best.

    Needs work!!

  5. Thanks for the info.

I do like the idea of a Sadowsky - I've played a MIJ one and the neck is perfect for me ......... but, as the MetroExpress is made in China, and I'm trying to reduce my reliance on all things Chinese , it's not for me.
I find the Fender Players a bit heavy, borrowed one and it didn't really "inspire" me.   My Squier Standard P Bass Special  Standard has a nicer neck profile (not a mile away from the Sadowsky) so maybe i should get a second hand Squire Standard Jazz and mod it ????

Anyone have experience of the neck "feel"/profile of a MIJ Fender Jazz vs Sadowsky (or indeed Squire Standard) neck profile?

  6. After playing basses with a P pickup for years, I fancy a try out on a Jazz.    It's not only a nice narrow neck that I fancy, but also to see the difference in the sound.
What might be a good model to go for for this budget (ish)?
Are the Sire's really that good?   Better than a second hand Fender Mexican Jazz?
Are the Sandberg Electra's close to a trad jazz bass?  Or might a second hand MIJ 62 reissue be worth a punt?

I'm miles away from stockists and would either risk a second hand example or go new from the likes of Thomann.

    Any  guidance appreciated.

  7. Bought just prior to Lockdown, used for the last 2 years every other weekend in Covers band.
    Very Good condition.
Always transported/housed in their covers, and there's a spare Mesa Cover for the 1x12.
Prefer to sell as a pair as they make a great combination.

No boxes but happy to discuss collection/delivery/meet up. At the asking price I'd deliver within 150 miles or so of Kendal, Cumbria.

    More photo's if needed

    Very good words there.

Add in a loud drummer, a guitarist who has to play on 11 all the time, a vocalist who needs their vocals loud in the monitors,  keyboard player without their own monitor, a room with concrete walls, a small stage...

I dont know why I did it for so long 🤦🏼

When did you see us play???  (minus keyboard)  🙄🤣

  9. We really struggled with feedback initially, and certainly getting the gain sorted on the mics helped.
Surprisingly though it was the monitor/mic positioning/monitor volumes which proved to be the key. i.e The Monitors were much more important than I thought and once this was sorted feedback is no longer an issue.
    Things that helped
    1)  Matching the stage position of the monitors  in accordance with the type of Mics has really helped, Cardiod/Hypercardiod, etc
    2) Getting the monitor volume down.   Once the band's in full cry there's a surprising amount of sound for FOH on stage, so getting the idea that the monitor is just supplementing the sound that's needed really helps.  However, this it the most difficult aspect, as people never say " the Monitors Too loud" .

    3) Taken the tack of... "Yes, we can sort out the volume in a minute ....... for now it's just the relative level of each element not the overall volume", if the "balance is right we can adjust as the set goes on IF it's not loud enough.  So if someone asks to be louder they may be saying " I can't hear myself over the other vocals (etc.)".  So the balance could be achieved by reducing the other elements in the mix.

Still need to remove all the knobs on the monitors to stop the band member deciding to tweak their monitors tone/volume during the gig!!

Or just say "sod it" and concentrate on bass playing.

It's imbecilic. They don't need your word they can check this themselves in seconds by just speaking into the mic from the front, sides and back.

Have you met  my band? The singer was convinced we had a faulty cable causing feedback once!

You mean it's not just me ???? ...... Phew, cheered me up no end!
