It's all relative... I wouldn't expect my dad is much cop at aerospace engineering...

Ha.. he was only a lowly drone, and no pun indended. I guess playing an instrument is a funny thing and it doesn't appear to have a lot a lot to do with what we think we can do, some people can do it others cant I guess.

  2. I envy you guys.
My old dads a pretty bright guy....aerospace industry etc and likes music and showed an interest so I did exactly the same thing a few years ago with an acoustic. I showed him a few things, went away for a few months only to return with him unable to hold the thing let alone play it, pity really.

  3. What an amazing piece of (expensive) history, though personaly I love to see them well worn etc.
I owned a black early 1977 B No model thoughout the 80's...but it was a dog, heavy as hell and I could never get the classic gnarly tone out of it.
    Iconic basses though.

  4. Only great thing about a Jazz for me is the bridge PU burp. Tried many different variations over the years but I cannot get past the body shape and skinny neck....though the RW one I had recently was wonderfully light and resonant but I couldn't keep it.

It's all poppycock, just play the damn bass ;)

You know I think ur right and I really didn't want to believe it.
Re my earlier post...my new Squire has got the hardest, toughest coating on it I've ever come across, its almost space age..yet the bass is lightweight and rings like a bell....said vintage P is heavy with a thinnish paint job and thuds like a sack full of lead weights..go figure.

  6. Played this brill stuff back in the day...tricky bassist to emulate.. he's very smooth, love it.

Just got to thinking bout the production quality on a lot of these old tunes...clear, crisp instrumentation with amazing separation...why the heck does everything today sound like a dull mush..

  7. Update

I've just made the fatal error of trying to learn a brilliant jazz fusion piece which I found that is way too advanced for me...and now cause I cant quite get it I'm feeling kinda fed up to the point of loosing interest in the whole endeavour...again.

Bad move. Must learn to work up gradually from the easy stuff first...ha

  8. Cant go wrong with Bootsy.

Put a drum machine app on ur phone, set it to play a lazy straight four beat and then play a single note on the 1st beat of eachbar..thats it ur playing funk and then add little connecting notes between each beat as you become more comfortable.

  9. Not sure if you read music.

After nearly 20 yrs on and off I'd become sick to death playing the same old pub rock type tunes..and so I had a six month break.

I then realised that in order to keep sane I had to learn to read....and it's been a life saver. I cannot explain the excitement I get from playing Big Band to Bach, Sinatra to simple jazz (Im still a novice) reading the dots..its changed my musical life completely. In fact I don't think I ever want to go back to playing those same old pub rock tunes....ever, or for that matter anything without music.
Learning to read has been a revelation.

    Just my 0.02p

  10. Great band...very clever quirky writing and Rhythym Stick is a masterpiece of originality. Love em.

Rhythm Stick is a bit tiring..trouble is it is the No1 Blockheads tune and if you want to play them u have to play it..took me a good few yrs to get it.

Fair point. I wish I had his ability too, I prefer simple understated lines with some fills. That doesn't mean just sitting on the root or anything lines can be melodic without being overly busy

I just think Jamersons sense of musicality is way above that of most of us which kinda sounds like he's overplaying so personally I dont think he does...the guy is just extraordinarily musical.
  12. I was very sceptical about the hype etc so I bought a Jazz and checked it over. For starters it felt resonant and sounded lovely..plenty of snarl etc but the really fascinating thing was its build...forget the Mex thing these are very different instruments.
It seems the body and headstock thickness are both thinner than my USA J bass...no idea why they do this but it makes a heck of a difference to the feel.
Lovely bass which sadly I had to sell...

  13. Just started to learn to read again after many, many failed attempts and at last I'm lovin it.

Oh and quick props to Mr Major Minor of this parish. I've tried loads of different books etc but his brilliant excercises trump the lot...most grateful indeed.
