1. Done only two live gigs in the past 10 yrs but here's a couple of observations.

A local originals band would always struggle to pull in the punters until established, goes with the territory...bin there done that,.

I honestly don't think I could stomach playing to a modern audience with them all either looking at there phones or holding them up videoing the band. Weird.

And thirdly.
I think we live in a new era.. where live entertainment is going to die and be non existent in 10-20 yrs time. I thank my lucky stars that my best gigging days were in the late 70's early 80's where I was out five nights a week doing originals, covers, holiday camps etc....feeling rather sad about it all really.

2. Love drummer tales.
An old guy joined a mixed covers band I was in..played every tune four on the floor disco style...reggae, funk, rock, ballads...lol..it was bloomin hilarious!.....one day I kinda looked at him with one of those looks bass players dish out now and again...end of the song he turns around and says ..."I guess you guys dont like my style much"...well mate its like this, never saw him again.

what's the age of your band? I'm afraid with very few exceptions bands tend to attract the same age group as themselves and older folk, generally, aren't interested in new music, I've said it before, but as rule of thumb, if you've not 'made it' by the time you're 30 it's very unlikely that you will. That's not to say you shouldn't make new music, but it'll be only for yourself and a few followers, my band are working on our next CD but I don't really expect to sell more than a few hundred.

This.

4. Just had another read of this thread and its really got me thinking.

I'm a pro-photographer trying desperately to retire ha..but the thing is I've never really considered myself a "photographer"..why? cause it was never my first love even though I earn my living from it. Music is where my head is but I could never make any money from it, yet it dominates every moment I'm not taking pictures etc....

I could pack the photography in tmrw easily.. but playing music.....Never!

5. I've often pondered this too. But here's my take. I'm a mediocre amateur bass player who doesn't read very well plus I never got an educational 'degree'. But I can figure out how to play most things by ear quickly.

Other half is a highly qualified bod with a PhD etc etc....but she cant even tap her fingers in time to a tune, let alone play an instrument..beleive me we've tried, which I think kinda bugs her a bit. So I suppose that makes me a musician...or does it...Ive no idea.

Yep, I realised it wasn't the UK Proms.
Just been watching some of the other shows.
That Orchestra is great. So organic with the Disco tunes.

And that is how you produce a dance tune...clean crisp bass and instruments beautifully seperated by some tasty engineering....old school style.

9. Nice colour etc but.....no router hump underneath neck pocket = not early 70's and if the bridge position is 'correct' then it is definetely not early 70's. In other words could be anything.
Still for the right price...nice bass.

10. Look at the tunes on that short list above..all classics and I bet just a fraction of the pop stuff she played on, let alone the masses of film and tv stuff she did.
She's spoken about a typical day in the studio where after ten hrs you neither cared nor could remember which track you played on. "Charts were placed on the stand and you just played the stuff" I think she said which kinda makes the whole Jamerson thing even more fascinating.
Seems she could be one minute finishing some old TV theme and then at the end of a long session be given a chart for a Detroit pop tune, who knows ...but it sure is fascinating.

11. I think Bowie would have loved it cause its new but not for me. His stuff is so remarkably different that I simply dont think it transposes well into anything..it is what it was and in its original form was completely iconic.
I even struggle listening to covers of his music, guy was unique.

I suffered the opposite to you last night. FOH sound through the P.A. was truly excellent but my rig sounded very thin and weedy from where I was standing. :(

As soon as I saw the venue, I knew it would be a challenge. It was a huge glorified cow shed, concrete floor, walls of concrete blocks and corrugated steel sheeting and then a pitched roof of corrugated sheeting. Higher than your average house and about 50 foot wide x 150 foot or so in length.

Spot on. Thin and weedy on stage is the way to go for a nice mid range grindy sound out front.

13. Saw Squeeze....as usual superbly musical and fab..
Saw Adele.....loved her mumsy image and I love the way she does what she does as a larger woman.....but I've never rated her voice much...thin and nasally, and she was flat here and there which for someone who is super hyped and who commands so much cash seems a bit wrong.
