1. Here ya go.

a, Best drummer the worlds ever seen...check

b, A nasty sad pathetic little man.....check.

And thats what I think about this. If it was a quick 10 sec blowout...that's understandable and not so bad, but this type of paused protracted bullying says it all really.

Horrendous.

2. Ha just seen a vid from Lisbon and Im impressed with this vocals....cant help thinking thats exactly how Bon Scott would have sounded today as an older man..ie mega gravelly and u have to hand it to Angus, he's amazing for his age...still a great band.

3. Just googled Steve Lewinson...yep I reckon that's the guy and looked like he was playing a Jazz style fiver....sounded huge.
First No was 1999....I love it when a pro soul band kicks off with that style of uptempo No...with swirling keys and brass, almost takes the top of ur head off. Brilliant.

4. Saw these guys last nite in Portsmouth. Ok, Peter Andre, and before u ask I was working at the venue! ...anyway he's a good performer etc etc.. but his band were super tite and bang on the money.

Anyone know who the bassist is?...big black guy with dreads, got the impression he was band leader etc...he had a huge very solid tone..kinda hit where it mattered, the whole thing sounded very good indeed, pretty exciting actually.

5. "I think I would go nuts if had a particular sound in my head I was chasing. To me all basses sound "bassy", otherwise they're pretty useless basses! That may sound infantile in its simplicity but I have a pretty broad spectrum of what "good" sounds like to me, because when it comes to playing with other musicians, in different locations, through different rigs if using house gear/gear share, to various quantities of people/room meat, with the FOH sound not in my control anyway - all that carefully researched and planned sonic calculation goes right out the window! As long as the basic tone of the instrument has some bassy heft to it and I'm able to get a bit of twang out of it for note definition and general "being heard over the ruckus" (thus eliminating some more old school designs - got shot of a Fender Starcaster after playing 1 gig with it for instance - plenty bass but not enough top even on the bridge pickup) then I'm happy.

Brilliant post...been saying the same for yrs.. and to prove it.

Did a summer fest gig using a P with old flats, lovely I thought nice and thumpy with just the right amount of cut.

Set was video'd and I could not believe the FOH tone which sounded more like a Wal wide open than a P bass.
with old flats and the tone rolled off a smidg.

6. When I gigged many moons ago I could never remember the names of the songs..always had to quickly get a handle on the first instr chord or vocal bar to know what I was doing....hated it when I had to start a tune first...ha

7. Not quite sure what Im trying to say here but for years I wanted a vintage P and four yrs ago bought one cheap which was great and it's now probably worth double what I paid. Thing is I bought a Squire VM PJ recently and now the vintage stays in it's case not cause Im afraid it'll get dinged but simply put the VM plays better and sounds better.

8. This perceived volume increase appears to be across all areas of entertainment.

I work in the promotions industry and I've lost track of the number of recent events employing a large PA, inside and outdoors which were often being run so loud that I've seen little kids running around with their hands over their ears....madness.

Suffice to say I wear my custom plugs at all times. Bliss.

9. Just looking at this from a punters perspective.

Went to see a 'pub' band recently and in a word had to 'leave' cause it was literaly too loud. Jeez what is going on with bands now...and yesmost of that was the grinding lower mid bass tone. Guy had a powerful modern rig which felt like it was cutting me in half...was a far cry from the old Bassman 135 and 1 X 15 I used to use back in the day.

10. There are literaly hundreds of very good drummers out there......Was watching a Tube vid about cruise ship musos, the drummer was being filmed and boy was he crisp!...and he was reading every dot, amazing.

But nail my colours to the mast?

Buddy Rich for shear originality followed by Steve Gadd who has probably played every style possible in a live recorded environment..

this is panty wetting phenomenal finger style from the master on a 5 string. his slap is obviously fantastic but i reckon his finger style is better. When he plays he really plays. He plays a stock Miller Fender 5 string on this record. he told me that when i met him. yes that is my claim to fame.

He's a great player but does he move me...no. Cant put my finger on it, it all sounds to frantic and not very musical. 0.2$

I really like Me'Shell's feel and Zender too, I think Zender is really underrated actually, when he was younger in that Jamiroquai gig he was such a good fit, really shone.

I know it's Jamerson but for me this is still the best recorded bass guitar part I've ever heard, there are parts of it where the harmony between him and Marvin are just achingly beautiful.

When the bass and the vocal start up proper, around the 30s mark, the whole tune just blossoms. That's ****ing bass playing. And just his movement generally under the strings throughout really brings the whole thing to life. What a player.

My current fave is Ready Freddie's playing on Steely Dan's tour Think fast in Cincinatti
https://www.youtube....h?v=HeniR2wP6kg

Consummate playing from a consummate sideman.

Listen to it on a good sound system.

+++1 havent seen it before

a The band... what a fab sound, my dream set up.
b Freddie. Lovely tone from what I think is a 'boring' 70's P bass, superb pro and still no-one can play 'forget me nots' the way he does.

The whole darn thing is as good as it gets.

14. For me its not the flash stuff that gets me but the subtle playing that often goes unnoticed but which inevitably supports the tune.
eg the subtle sequence of ghost notes on the chorus on Andy Gibbs Everlasting Love....yeah Its ok I can hear the chortling from the back of the class but its terrific playing however cheesy the tune might be.
or Bob Babbitts playing on the Gladys Knight and Diana Ross singles from the early 70's uber musical and spot on.

15. My old granny apparently played piano in the pubs during the war but my mum is completely musically illiterate..but my brother and myself are pretty musical.
Funny how that happens.

16. I know I'm gonna get slammed for this.
He just did a solo live number which comprised strumming an amped guitar real hard and fast and shouting....beats me. Reckon my age has finally caught up with me....or has it?
McCartneys son, I would never have guessed.

17. Funny thing is after 20 odd yrs I now find myself just using my index finger only with the second finger hitting the strings now and again when needed. It seems to work really well with a lighter touch and my playing's improved a heck of a lot.

18. I recently ended up like the OP and the way round it for me was to move away from the pop/rock genre and to learn to read and study jazz...two things which yrs ago I would have never thought remotely possible. (maybe its an age related thing)
Anyway the house is now knee deep in music scores and I've never been happier.

I thought 'trike' had been banned as it was nasty, remember it from years ago in my engineering apprentice days.
Reckon I've had 15 cars, some done close to 200k miles and never had the need to clean the brakes!
It must be one of those substances that advertisers like to sell us, completely unnecessary (like furniture polish, vaginal deodorent, toilet cleaner, snake oil.....)
Maybe not the brakes but it strips grease like nothing else and thats just the bloody fumes...which is how they prepare alloy bits for anodising etc.
