1. Howdy Builders, Following in from a recent thread I started but am far to lazy to find and link, I have nearly finished construction of an Electrovoice 15 as shown earlier in this thread. As it's oh-so-nearly finished I've been on a spending spree and purchased a Hartke LH500 head (hopefully arriving tomorrow if Mr Delivery Man can get through the snow), an Eminence Kappa 15 (450 @ 8 ohm), and a few other bits and pieces to finish it off, but I think to be fair the cab itself is not as well constructed as it might have been  . This is at odds with the rest of the project as the speaker and amp are a couple of tiers 'up' from what I'd originally planned. So I'm thinking about writing off the £12.00 of ply offcuts that I've not yet paid my Dad for, and starting again, but I have a couple of (well actually 4) questions... How would the cab be effected if I were to construct it from MDF, what are the pro's and cons, as far as the finished product goes? How would the cab be effected if I were to use thinner material (ply or MDF)? Should I keep the internal dimensions the same, or work to the external volume and use the extra internal space to allow for a coulpe of internal braces (any tips on placement?) Would it be detrimental if I were to extend the front edge of the 'port top' to bring it flush with the front-face edge of the cab? (For purely aesthetic reasons, I want to cover the baffle and speaker with flat grille, flush to the front, but have the ports 'on show' a-la some of the modern 'boutique-style' cabs) I've bought some B&Q recycled plastic loft insulation to line it with, it's very dense and very fluffy (technical, I know ) but its also quite thick (expands to 'up to 150mm). Will this occupy 'too much' of the internal space, or is this an issue I'm inventing? I was thinking maybe a few well placed staples could keep it in check? Many thanks, Steve.
2. Quite interested in a usb interface, anyone have any thoughts regarding the Line 6 Toneports, GX and UX1? Comes bundled with Cubase (LE?) S.
3.
So assuming I buy the Warwick ProFet 3.2 +1 for this choice for a cheap, quality, 300W head. I bought mine from Thomann and had no trouble with them. If you wanted to penny pinch even further, you could buy mine, it's absurdly cheap!!
London's a bit far from Manchester for 'local pick up'!, no idea what a courrier would charge. I was intending to hold off buying the amp until the cab's near-ready and I've passed my exam, but I'll keep my eye on your for-sale thread. Thank's for the offer, hope you get your double-bass! S.
4. Cheers for the replies guys. I'll have a good look through the BFM site, I did have a quick look when I first went through the thread but found some of it a tad complicated, and I'm not sure if the hidden-drivers thing is to my liking aesthetically, although if it sound good I'm sure I could be convinced. So a few good ideas to be going on with, and I'll try and let you know how I get on, and if I end up going DIY, and if it's a good enough effort, I may even put up a few pics. Thanks All... S.
5.
If you're that much of a tight wad play harmonica or get a penny whistle!
I bought a harmonica but in a rare moment or generousity I gave it to my Dad before I even got it out of the box. Penny-whistle's are obviously over-priced, and their description should fall foul under the trade discriptions act. When did you last see one on sale for a penny? S.
6.
The EV plans for a 1x15" are GREAT cabs. I built one myself about 15 yrs ago- still use it today & IMO it sounds better than most modern -equivalent-cabs I've used. I don't think U NEED to add a tweeter. A crossover & a smaller himid driver 'd be a better idea- IF U DO NEED the 'Zing factor" I play everything from old school rocknroll, thru funk & modern pop & the EV 15 does everything FINE!! I'd make it at 8 ohms - as I did- Then if needed U can add a 2x10" cab or similar later -at 8 ohms also to get full power. depends on power requirements, BUT I was fine w/ my 8 ohm cab for yrs!
If I use any additional driver, do I need to mount it in it's own sealed box, on the back of the baffle? And how does this effect the dimensions of the cab, do I need to recoup the lost volume elsewhere? Would a crossover affect the amount of juice that drives the 'woofer' (could a himid be made off-and-on-able?). Also the more I need to add the less attractive this becomes, because I'm a tight-@rse I'm a little out of my depth with the impedance thing tbh. S.
7.
Not that I am an expert or anything, but I think a clue to what drivers you should use may be in the Electrovoice plans
I think they were designed with EV's own drivers in mind, but I was thinking of using something a bit more modern. (Are EV even still going?) S.
8. Okay, Here's the way it is... At the moment I'm working towards an exam (I'm not gonna say what level) hopefully for some time in the new year. I've decided I'm going to treat myself to a new amp when I pass, and being somewhat limited in funds I decided on an Ashdown Electric Blue evoII. Except that now I haven't. I have been enthralled by the DIY cabs thread, and I'm tempted to believe that I could buy a Warwick Profet 3.2 and build a small rig based on that for not alot more than the Ashdown combo. I doubt very much that I would be dissapointed with the Ashdown, those for sale on here seem to get lots of +ve comments and it would be a vast improvement in terms of power and quality over what I use now, but if it's feasable I'm hoping to go one better. So assuming I buy the Warwick head, I need to know what to do about a cab. I have every confidence in my woodworking skills (and, perhaps more crucially, those of my Father who would be helping), and lots of time (ie from now until my exam) to construct a cab, however I don't know how to spec it up. I don't want the overall rig to be much bigger than a large-ish combo, so I was thinking about a 1X15 using the Electrovoice plans linked in the 'stickies' of this section. What spec (watts/ohms) should my driver be to use alongside this amp? If I use it as a single cab would I need to add a tweeter? (I use a 4 string yamaha rx with active circuitry). If i was to build a 2X12, could I use the EV 4X12 as a template and 'half it' or the 1X12 and 'double it' How then would I spec the drivers? Or should I just plump for the Ashdown and be happy (and possibly gratify myself by building an extension cab for it...) I would welcome the wisdom af any opinions, for and against! S. ps with a nod to some more penny pinching has anyone dealt with these chaps... http://www.thomann.de/gb/index.html
9. "Stretchin' Out" by Bootsy, learned at the reccomendation of (and, I think, by way of a mini-assessment by) my tutor. I had it sooo wrong first time round. Also, The "Not-So-Long-Song" from CBBC tv show RazzleDazzle, and a fudgey version of Fraggle Rock. Both kids' tv tunes are by ear so probably also wrong... S.
10. I've just got back (well actually I've had my tea inbetween times) from my fourth lesson with Nick. Nick is an excellent teacher. He listens, he seems to understand my particular problems, and he deals with them very well. Even though we're only working through the early-stages gradebook at the moment, I can definately hear improvents in my playing as a result of his direction. I'm not exactly a confident player, but one thing that has helped alot is that Nick has never pulled out all his chops in an attempt to impress ( although you can tell that he definately could ); He pushes you a little bit, but I've never felt intimidated. One of the reasons I've gone so long without lessons was through the fear of playing infont of an accomplished player, so in some respects I'm kicking myself now: That said, If I'd gotten a tutor 10 years ago it probably wouldn't have been Nick, and I would probably have been a lot less impressed! If you read some of the earlier posts in the thread Nick explains his teaching and lesson planning. I can honestly say that every lesson has brought me and my playing on. Needless to say I've booked my next round of four with Nick, and would readily reccomend him to anyone. Steve.
11. This morning I booked my first lesson with Nick, for Monday afternoon of next week. Seemed a thorougly nice chap on the 'phone and was only too happy to listen to me drivel on. Very much looking forward to it! S.
12. Guys don't be sittin' on the fence about the tuition thing It's nice to know I'm not the only one. S.
13. How-Do. I've 'played' for about 12 years and I suck if I'm being honest  Gear wise, I owned a Westfield P copy which died through neglect and was replaced about 7 years ago with a Yamaha RX thing with active J/P set, which I have defo not neglected and is doing fine service. I have 2 small practice amps, a Park15 and an Aria50 (which is really just a 30, huh?) All I've ever done is try to play bits from songs that I like. I now find myself, at 30, in my first band situation, which is really showing the cracks and flaws. I'm here to try and improve myself a bit, and maybe to try and pick up a meatier combo amp when (if) the time comes. Anyway, site looks good and useful, but be ready for lots of stoopid q's, and my ashamed silince (you will probably NEVER hear me play ) S.
