  1. I've only ever played acoustic drums, myself, and part of the appeal is the visceral experience of making noise. They're a pain in the hole to record but, overall, that's part of the charm, part of the challenge, I like it in a wierd way. I've been in a band where the (very loud) drummer sometimes brought in his electronic drums and, yeah, it made the volume levels manageable but there was definitely something missing, particularly going from loud to quiet and back again, it didn't track changes in dynamics as naturally sounding as you would get with an acoustic kit. You don't see many jazz cats playing them. That being said, they're grand for 95% regular playing.

  2. I've bought the music I like since I was a teenager and have some fairly niche stuff as a result. Why pay some suit to stream what I already own and some of it doesn't feature on any streaming service anyway? I've ripped everything I own losslessly and bought a large capacity phone to have much of it with me whenever I want to listen to it.

Having music on Spotify like many on here (because I found it was ending up there anyway, even though I hadn't uploaded it there), and seeing what they pay artists as a result, I would wonder where the bulk of my monthly fee was going, since it isn't going to the people who made the music I listen to. I choose not to support Spotify with my money, as a result. If I want to hear anything without buying a physical product, I'll buy it off Bandcamp. Foooook Spotify.

  3. 10th of May, 1988. I was getting into Heavy Metal and went, with my friends, to see Megadeth, supported by Sanctuary. Back then, they used to do a cover of These Boots Were Made for Walking at gigs and, during the extended bass intro, I realised I was going to be a bassist, having never considered playing an instrument prior to that.

Playing in a band to a small/uninterested audience is still the same thing though isn't it?

Nope, I wouldn't say so, not in the digital age where reputations can be made or destroyed quite easily and quickly, i.e. a single social media post about his band playing to no-one, unable to draw an audience, seen by other landlords or promoters, does their reputation no favours at all. Everything you listed as something which could do them good can (and should) be practiced and worked on in a rehearsal room, not figured out on stage and in public.
