1.
If you fancy a reverse headstock Jazz, I have a Johnson fretted neck sat around, kinda have plans for it, but could do with some pennies, I will send it to you for £30, with tuners on. You'll need to replace the nut. Its very chunky though, might be better off with another neck entirely if you fancy a different profile, and that kinda kills the idea.
It would be cool to do, but my rookie status in the bass world means ive got a year or so to go before i start attaching new necks to things. Thanks though.
2.
I bought my Johnson off htis guy, bunch of the stuff he claims about the pickups is not true, but message him and see if he has a fretted one, he was cool to deal with: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/JOHNSON-JAZZ-BASS-LE...%3A1|240%3A1318
Its funny you mention this guy as i had already sent him a message. He has no left hander fretted Jazz's, a couple of P's though.
3. So at the end of the day, if resale isnt an issue, and you wanted to buy a P-copy, and slowly upgrade the components as money became available then any of the solid wood copies will do the trick? Im asking because im a lefty (tried learning right handed, and just found it very very hard), and ive sold on my right handed bass and im in the market for a new one at around £150-200. But the options are few and far between. But i have noticed Johnsons, Aria's, and some other very cheap bass's knocking about for under £100, and would be interested if i knew they are just as good a starting point as the much loved SX's. It'll cost me about £135 to get an SX P-bass shipped to my house, not as cheap as the exchange rate used to make it, and no warranty.
4.
I think that's "solid" as in "not plywood" Most bass bodies will be 3 or maybe 5 pieces glued together but it stands a better chance of being half-decent if these pieces are solid as opposed to plyood or MDF.
I get ya... So bearing in mind that the cheapy guitar in question is made from proper wood, like alder. Are there any other things that effect it or that make the SX a better bass to upgrade?
5.
There's more chance of an SX, Squier or something at that price point being a solid piece of wood.
Solid as in a 1-piece body? How much difference does this make, arent Thunderbird bodies 3-piece?
6. SX have this great reputation for being cheap to buy, easy to upgrade, and nice to play. Is this because they really are so great, or could you not buy a different brand of cheap bass like a Johnson, Aria, or ALBA and be able to mod that in the same way to produce a decent instrument?

9. Yes, its made in Japan, i believe the body to be Basswood, it is a Jazz sized neck (but not a direct replacement), and as for age i believe its in the 90's. I'll speak to the owner when i see him later to confirm the year. And yes, active.
10. My mates selling his bass as he's a guitarist and it gets very little use. He will be buying a cheaper bass with the proceeds so may accept a px with cash his way. I'll get pics up as soon as i get them from him, but its a tobacco burst in good condition for used. Is there any interest from you guys (and gals)? He's looking for £300 Sorry, pics arent the best, camera phone jobbies im afraid.
11. Im left handed and learning right... Worried that i still air guitar left handed tho!
12. Thanks for all your support guys, and i think i'll definately be taking you up on that offer Bilbo as soon as the car's back on the road if its still on the table. I think a couple of pointers and some lessons will get me well on the way, at least then i'll know if what im doing is right, and wether im progressing at an expected level, or wether im even progressing at all. I'll PM you in a few days Bilbo, felixestowe's not a million miles away. You can talk about Jazz all you like, i love learning about music i havnt paid much attention to in the past. Its great having this forum... Without it i dont know if i'd have even got this far.
13. Yo guys, after being excited about bass for months, and finally getting my bass and being absolutely rubbish, and the whole thing being really disheartening i think i desperately need a proper lesson, or at least some face to face tuition, or just some face to face advice. I knew i was not so good, but a mate came over (a guitar player) and started playing the crap out of my bass for fun and that sent my confidence rock bottom, and ive been neglecting this place in the process, and i just feel really bad and low about everything bass related. I went to the Offset Festival in Romford, Essex over the weekend, and i've well and truly got the bass bug back, and the desire for a white Thunderbird but thats another story, anyways, is there anyone local to Colchester, or Essex as a whole who would fancy giveing me a few pointers or at least slowly showing me what they do? Im not a rich man but i will play this bass well if its the last thing i do!!! Rant over, thanks in advance, Jesus (slightly wrecked on red wine but staring at his bass that deserves better)
14. Doomsday - Atreyu, gets the blood pumping for a good night out, and For the Love of Money - The O'Jays, for revitalising after a hard days chore.
15.
You can walk on water but can't work out photobucket. Religion just ain't what it used to be!
Computers are the devil!
16. Yeah it is in awesme condition, Im going to watch a mates' band play tonight in Colchester. They're supporting Brigade if thats means anything to anyone, they're not my cup o tea. Anyway, i'll have a a look at how low his strings are get an idea of how high mine are. If i lower the strings on the bridge, how would i go about adjusting the strings to stop the buzz?
17.
You were trying to link to your hard drive? Or was the apostrophe causing problems?
No i was taking the img link from photobucket but still using the insert image button here, so i had " class="ipsImage" />" class="ipsImage" />myphoto I didnt realise untill i was posting it above and saw my mistake.
18. Ive got Disturbed on, more specifically Criminal by Disturbed. Not everyones taste but i quite like them. Usually i'll have anything on from Atreyu, A7X, Iron Maiden, Story of the Year, Pantera to The O'Jays, Era, Bootsy Collins, and a special place in my heart belongs to the Blues Brothers.
19.
Hi Jesus have you got any allen keys to fit the grub screws in the saddles? Have you got a tuner? Have a fiddle around trying to to lower the action, as Ben says, it's best to start getting to know how your bass functions because you will probably save a fortune in the long run. Try to post a pic of the bass neck, side on, looking down the edge of the fretboard from the headstock down so we can see if the neck needs to be straightened using the truss rod. Do you have a friend who knows what they are doing when it comes to setting up a bass? If so get them to show you how it is done, if not, I'm sure we could help you be remote control (a bit like trying to land a plane when the pilot is out of action). Just remember to do small adjustments and retune each time you make them. We'll get you sorted.
Ive got a tuner, and some small allen keys so i'll check that out when i get home, i dont think the necks in bad shape, apparently it was set-up 3months ago. could it be just a simple job of lowering each string at the bridge? Im worried that if i do that, then the buzz i have already will be a lot worse?
20. Cheers guys... im going to do a search a bit later on to see if there are any tutorials or guides to setting it up. Like you say if i get it wrong its gonna ahve to go to a shop anyway. Cani cause any damage or anything pissing about with the truss rod?
21.
That's a really nice looking bass Just one thing, is it the picture angle or is the action of your E string really high?
As i said above, this is my first bass and im of the opinion thats the action is high, but im getting some fret buzz all of the fret board. Would it be easy for a complete novice to attempt to set it up lower? Are there guides here or anywhere that i could follow?
