  1. That's a shame, though I think I'll still try to have a go on one.

If nothing else it's a much prettier guitar than the Yamaha's, and most other PJ's I've seen for that matter.

I don't use my SB2 as much these days but I never missed the tone control; the bridge pickup is quite weak (I think because it's so close to the bridge), so the way I see it, it's almost like that pickup is the tone control - if you want more treble turn that pickup up, you want less, turn it down. So you have something that works in a similar fashion, but gives a different effect to a tone control. Of course, YMMV.

Thanks, a weak bridge pickup might be a deal breaker, although I'm aware that on a PJ the bridge pickup is often quieter than the P.

I'm hoping to find something that gives a similar scooped tone to the Jazz, but with a bit more oomph, if that makes sense.

I never missed it but I found a reasonable range of tones between the two volume pots. I never regarded it as fiddly either, certainly no more than twisting a tone pot. I know some SB2 owners have missed the tone though and it's a fairly straightforward mod to add one apparently (I've also heard you can custom order one from G&L with the tone control added). I've never owned a trib but I've heard nothing but good things about them and they seem great value.

    Cheers, that's useful.

I generally play jazzes with everything flat out so I don't really use the tone at the moment, so there's a good chance I wouldn't miss it, I've just never owned a bass without one.

I'm going to have to go out and try one to see if we get on.

  4. How does the lack of a tone control work out on the SB2?

    Do you miss it?

I'm buying myself a PJ for Christmas and I'm currently thinking of a Yamaha BB424x or BB1024x but the SB2 Tribute has also grabbed my attention. I guess that theoretically you can probably vary the tone by adjusting the volume between neck and bridge pickups, but it seems like it might be a bit fiddly?

There are bots (automated computer programs) which examine the competitor's price and then sell higher.

Sometimes they spiral out of control; e.g. this book on sale for $23.7 million!

    That's interesting cheers.

Off topic, yesterday I was looking at cat food bowls on Amazon after accidently smashing mine and as I often do I listed the items from most expensive first, idly wondering how much it was possible to spend on such a bowl.

Over £200 for a bog standard plastic bowl apparently. After reading your post I understand how that may have happened.

  6. Jaco's like the first man on the moon, there can never be another.

There's no doubt that Mohini is very, very special, but I doubt she can have that kind of impact on the musical world.

i just listen to the band and play along with them.

    anyone elles doing this???

I suspect most of us do this to one extant or another.

I've never really understood the 'count in'. I just start when I'm supposed to start. No conscious effort to count the beats at all.

As to 'this is in F# minor' - it may well be, but beyond knowing where F# (or is it G Flat?) is on the fretboard I just play stuff that fits with what everybody else is playing.

As long as it's not noticeably discordant with what the others are doing I reckon I'm winning.

That is one I am listening to a lot.Well Curtis Mayfield, as I have no idea who played the bass, which fits neatly into a question. I have to transcribe a song for the first time, so I picked Pusherman. Is Scott playing the bass on that? In fact, I am just getting into the Superfly soundtrack. Some awesome tracks on it

Love that album, I'm actually thinking about trying to order the DVD or download the film, just because the sound track is so good.

  9. Back in the 90s I was in a (mostly) originals indie band that did a version of Misirlou (better known as the theme from Pulp Fiction).

Used to go down a storm even without a trumpeter.

I reckon there are quite a few people who'd be up for seeing an instrumental surf music band, I'd be one of them. Whether you could find enough of them in one place to do regular gigs, I'm not sure, but I could imagine that people might want to book such a band for specific events/functions.

Only on BassChat - someone asks for a tab and someone else vids them a private lesson.

    Nice one, WoT :)

With the added bonus of a bit of Maruszcyzk porn.

  11. I'd love to have a proper crack at drums, I reckon it would make me a better bass player.

I've got a mate who has offered to lend me her electric kit, but from having a couple of lessons at her house I reckon even that would be noisy enough to have the neighbours coming after me with farm implements and flaming torches where I live.

  12. It's just my grouchy instincts.

It would have been great on a Christmas EP.

I just don't like hearing Christmas music on albums I listen to all year round Bah Humbug etc.

Do you know if the new one's on general release or just on Spotify?

I just checked Amazon and they don't seem to have it yet, or I'd be listening to it right now.

Has anyone listened to the new album yet? It came out on Spotify yesterday and I was having a listen this morning on my way to work. Really liking it so far.

It's not got another bloody Christmas song on it has it?

The last one was definitely a low point on the album.
