Flanger with very flexible controls so you can go from chorus to phaser type sounds.

    Digital Delay.

You should also have a feedback blend option on it!
+1

  2.
Second question is where do you get a replacement transformer. The valves are ECC83's and EL34's.

    Balcro.
a second transformer might be tough to get. your best bet is probably to take it to a trusted amp tech who knows vintage gear (i'm sure someone on here can recommend one) and see what they say.

  3.
One of these days I'll get round to replacing it.
actually, you don't need to replace it entirely. :)

take out all the other boards so you can get to the circuit board with the switch on it, and IIRC you just need to pop open the top of the switch, clean the contacts, and bend out the little springy bit so it presses more firmly against the contacts. i did it about 3 years ago though so that may be a little off......

  4. i think he means the footswitch, they're sometimes pretty dodgy unless you clean them out like i did on the one i just sold.

also, i'm pretty sure cash converters have a policy where you can return it if it's "unfit for purpose" or something like that; i bought a midi controller from them a few years ago and they said i could bring it back if i didn't like it....

as far as the sound, i was able to get a really deep, gutsy overdrive sound from it. seems best suited to rock/metal but for some reason i never really got on with it 100%.

  5.
My last bass was a Marlin Sidewinder and I thought it was pretty horrible, how do the bass guitars you guys are suggesting compare.
pretty much any bass is better than those sidewinders, all of these suggestions are miles above :)

also, my vote is for yamaha.
In a loud band and particularly when using fingers and not a pick, your subtle wood types, deluxe strings, pre-amps, and amps with more knobs than Eton, will not get you much further than if you used equipment costing a fraction of the price.
exactly! hence my non-exotic bass.....

  7.
Stomp boxes are simpler, safer, better sounding, transfer better between instruments and MORE FUN.
safer? do many people get injured by multieffects? :)

i suppose if a whole rack fell on you....

  8.
Our last lead guitarist had a floor full of pedals and was forever fiddling about with them trying to get "the sound he had last time" because invariably at least one of the knobs would have got inadvertently moved, but finding which one...
plus the one.

not really the same thing, but one of the reasons i got the programmable sansamp was that the settings are stored, regardless of if the knobs get moved around or not. the knobs on my compressor get moved now and again, and it's really annoying to try to find that "right" sound again.

Only having a few effects, i've always preferred to have individual ones over multi-effects, as to my ears they do sound better; having said that if i was using several basses and a fair few effects live then really the only way to go is with something programmable, and save the single effects for the recording :)

  9.
Any advance on these pics? escholl When you say they attack the strings do you mean rip apart the protective layers and wear them down quicker? How do they feel weird? I could imagine the grating being harsh on the ears though :L
the actual attack of the note is really harsh....maybe aggressive is a better word to use? it will definitely cut through the mix, and probably your strings too haha...don't think i'd use it on anything but steels, and definitely not elixirs!

if i do use a pick, i'll use dunlop tortex 1.14's (the purple ones), so that's what i'm comparing it to. The metal doesn't flex at all, and because the corners don't wear like their plastic counterparts, they kind of "grab" at the roundwound wrapping on each stroke. probably ok if you only do downstrokes.

overall, i just found them too clang-y. not in like, a new strings sort of way, more of in a horrible makes-your-teeth hurt sort of way. the pick i tried was a different make however, i don't know if these are any better. on the other hand, if you're using it through some effects, the extra attack might actually give you some new sounds to play with as well.

also, if you need to get your band's attention NOW at practice, do a pick slide :)

  10.
Well! Glad I am not the only one!
There is no better dry wit and humor than what you find in the Isles. :)

Perhaps being bassists are strange to others due to our organizational skills and rather deep satirical senses of humor.
haha agreed, definitely. probably why i fit in so well here

  11.
Well, being the only American here that I know of..........It is now time for me to speak.
hello fellow american! :)

i lived there for 20 years, moving to the UK 2 years ago. i don't go on TB, because, basically, i didn't like it...very "clique-y" indeed. BC ftw!

i play bass, love target shooting, and hate roast dinners. does that make me strange? probably, but i'd rather be me than anyone else.

i think bassists have to be a bit strange....if we weren't, we'd have learned to play g**tar like everyone else

  12.
I managed to kill my MB amp last night. The sound went but the power light stayed on. 5 mins later it's almost bursting into flames. Smoke shooting out of the vents like nobodies business ha ha. Thing was, I never drive it to clipping point and I don't really push the power section 'that' hard either!!!

Oh well, it was good while it lasted. It's only 3 years old though I wouldn've thought it'd last a lot longer than that. I'm wondering if there's any point at all in contacting Proel/MB about it.

Edit: I took it apart to see what had happened and I'd done some serious damage to the PCB, talk about chargrilled!!! Loads of components had melted etc...
I took a series of photos of the innards, so i'll email them to MB at some point and ask them about their supposed miniscule component failure rate.
yikes. that should never really happen in properly designed equipment. health-and-safety lawsuit much?
