  1. I've got the vinyl 2x10 and the carpet 1x15. They sound lovely together but the 15 is a heavy bastard and I live in a third floor flat at the moment. Can handle the 2x10 but have hardly gigged with the 15 cos of this. It does sit nicely on top of the 15 but is a couple of inches shallower.

  2. Hey Jake,

Ah cool, I'l try to give the tunes a listen when I finish work. Would definitely be up for coming to see you play, but I'm back home for a week from this thursday, so I might have to postpone that, and the lessons too... What dates are you up for? And are you taking everything there and back every day of the recording? If me and James were gonna both get a lesson (I've just txted him the prices you PMed, will let you know asap) I would probably be up for driving down to you and splitting petrol costs with him. Let me know what dates you're recording and I'll work out when I'm about, do you gig much around London? Would be keen to come see you play :)

    Cheers,

    Tom

  3. I find the triangular one on the left is a bastard to get in, I don't usually bother with it... You've got to push the ends down vertically, looks like it should go in at an angle but it won't. the other one I found goes in alright, just have a look at the angle of the holes and make sure they're going in at the right angle.

  4. I've got 2 of those drivers in my 2x15! it's over a metre tall (i think 120 or 160cm...) and sounds alright at low volumes, but crap at anything like gig volumes. crap xmax if i remember correctly? dr decibel (he even had business cards!) from celestion helped me design the cab, porting, volume etc. Do you have the parameters for the driver? i've lost 'em and i'd love to try and make a good cab out of them. if it's possible. bill?

  5. Hey Jake,

Encouraging stuff, glad to hear it's not too different feel-wise from the real thing. The Dairy's a cool studio, recorded there late last year... Who are you recording with, if you don't mind me asking? Anything to do with Brown Punk?

Could you PM me prices for lessons (unless you don't mind posting them up here). Me and my flatmate were thinking of maybe getting an hour between us... Depending on price... :)

How are you getting to and from the studio? We're about a 30 second walk from Tooting Broadway Tube station, if you're going by tube.

    Cheers,

    Tom

  6. No frusty, no effects on any part of it. That's with the active bass all the way off, just the natural sound of it. Should have mentioned that... Straight into my PC through the soundcard. Would be interested to hear a clip of yours linus...

  7. Thanks for the tips Jake! Just had another little play, the stance thing definitely helped! I'm living in Tooting at the mo and may well be interested in driving down to you for some lessons. I should have a bit of cash coming through in the near future so I'll let you know.

  8. Hey jake, I meant the same as Linus when referring to vicelike grip, not the way I'm playing it at the mo. I'm also intending to get lessons but at the moment I'm extremely poor so I'm just gonna keep bashing away and try not to get any bad habits, which ins why I was asking about any pointers or definite no-no's from more experienced DB players such as yourself. I've found when I first pick up the DB it's a bit of a struggle left hand wise, not painful as such but I just feel clumsy and slow, after a few tunes, then a break I can get back on it and feel a bit more warmed up, generally more on it intonation and fretting-wise.

I'm finding my thumb gets in the way, it bends backwards about 90 degrees, so i've never had textbook technique on BG, but it's never caused me problems technique wise. It does seem to stop my hand properly arching over the neck on the DB though. It's at the back in the centre of the neck still, so dunno how much of a difference it's making...

Paul - I got mine from Zings, they were very helpful, it was an xmas present from the parents and told them it'd be late Jan/early Feb. I called up on the 15th asking where it was and apparently they'd sent my mum an email asking if the long waiting time would be ok and never received a response. They said I was lucky as a shipment had come in the day before and they'd get one out to me asap, that was thursday, business post tried to deliver it monday and i picked it up from their depot tuesday. Very good service by Zings! I did ask for black, and they asked if metallic black was ok, i asked what other colours they had and they said that was all at the moment as they were all as rare as gold dust. So I'd say get an order in asap, at that price I could handle a month or so waiting time...

    Cheers,

    Tom

  9. Just a quick update...

Lovin' it! Spent last night trying to play along with some jazz standards and some fingathing tunes (awesome instrumental hip hop band, just EUB and decks, UK based too!).

I'm actually finding 4 finger technique easier than the 124 double bass thing. Hand strength has still got a long way to go, and intonation, but it's great fun. My back aches a bit. If anyone fancies giving me a few pointers that'd be nice... Or generally any info about standing position relative to the bass. Tried to find some stuff on the net but doesn't seem like there's much about...

    Cheers,

    Tom

  10. Hello everyone!

I now have my stagg :)

Went to Croydon last night to pick it up on the way to my girlfriend's. Got about 20 minutes to play it all told, loving it so far, as linus said, very different to a bass guitar. Had my fretless for about a year before I gigged it, I can see this being at least a year and half, bearing in mind the amount of time I get to practice...

Firstly though, it looks amazing, I got metallic black, looks very sleek, feels nice and solid. Nice smooth neck and fingerboard. Cheeky blue LED too.

From what linus had said about the action I was worried it was going to be a real beast, but it's not too bad. I haven't tried adjusting the action or anything yet, so it may go up or down. It's definitely doable and I can see myself doing some damage during handshakes with my vice like grip in 6 months time.

I only had it plugged in for about 3 minutes through my trace and it sounded great, not as woody as a double bass but the lower register seemed to have that fat 'bloom' when a note is plucked. The midrange seemed a bit lacking in this, but don't hold me to that, it may just be technique...

The upper register is still a mystery to me, having barely been able to fret (as it were) the notes above the 14th. Intend to get my head around the whole shift in position thing, but feels very awkward at the moment...

Anyway, that's enough for now, I'll get some pics up soon, and give you guys an update when I feel I've made some progress/had an epiphany/started crying because my hands hurt.

    Cheers,

    Tom

  11. Good programme, I've downloaded a few of the best ones off emule. Laser eye surgery is a bit grim, also downloaded the amp one, and acoustic guitar one... Gettin' the cello one now. I'm a geek. :| no sign of the bass one on there... It's on one of the discovery channels or something like that? Don't have cable at the mo, but that and Walker Texas Ranger (and a couple of cheeky joints) was a classic mix at the end of a long sainsbury's night shift back at uni.
