There are a few snippets of info on solo and collaboration work on his Wikipedia page - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derek_Forbes

I was surprised when he sold his Wal on eBay a few years ago. As he had writing credits on quite a number of Simple Minds tracks, I'm sure he doesn't need the money!

And I was surprised and delighted when he sold me his Vigier.

I'd also been keen to hear more of his recorded work if it is out there.

There is one other thing though; I think without the creative outlet my personal finish line would become rather too imminent, if you get my drift, as I hate most other aspects of my life.

Hey man, really sorry to hear you saying that.  I'm glad you've got the creative outlet but I hope you can find other things to keep you positive.

That looks like it might have been acoustically "interesting". What was it like?

    S.P.

Actually, it was really good.  We had the PA up outside the tunnel entrance and the tunnel had lots of openings out to the side so there wasn't too much bouncing.  We could also put the drums quite far back so our onstage sound was nice.  We put everything through the PA so it was controlled.  I recommend gigging there if you ever get the chance

  4. Agreeing a band calendar is always a tricky thing and, occasionally, stuff comes up.  Over the last ten years, I think we might have had to cancel one gig.  We have a number of deps we use and, on occasion, have spent hours on the phone getting a last minute dep due to a crisis.  Find a dep drummer and try to keep the gigs, the reputation is important.

  5. How about learning all your old songs in new positions on the 5?  Aim to play nothing below the fifth fret on strings E to G.  That should open new musical possibilities for you and give a taste of what a 5 can bring to your playing.  Since moving to a 5, I have become a much better musician by having this approach.  And I have short arms so it helps me having more notes within easy reach.  Don't give up, 5s are very cool instruments 😎

  6. After nearly 30 years of a big variety of bass ownership, I've recently bought two SR5s and tackled the truss rod for the first time.  The little wheel makes it super easy and both moved no problem and did what they should.  The wheel is very easy to use so maybe I got lucky.  It did feel cool seeing the relief change 😎

Edit: and I did it under tension.

To be fair, they did have a record called The Gospel According to the Meninblack, which was a concept album about ancient astronauts...

Ironically, while Hugh and JJ were both Doors fans, Dave Greenfield had never heard them.

Agreed! Always the Sun is a personal favourite.

I don't know if we're talking about the same tracks, but I echo the sentiment. They could be quite inconsistent even within the same album, which isn't usually how I feel about bands I like, but for my money you could stick half of Rattus together with half of No More Heroes and make a better album in the process. Also, to me some of their best stuff were singles, even B-sides (like Straighten Out). They also have some very good songs that, I have to admit, make me a bit uncomfortable (like Sometimes).

My favourite Stranglers LP is The Raven, though. And if anyone thought Down in the Sewers was prog, have a listen to this one, where Hugh is in a different meter from the rest of the band:

Yeah, Hugh's guitar work on that album is superb and BB is a great example.  Great band, the first five albums were so creative.

  8. Just got into the musicman world after many years of many other basses.  Now got two pretty much the same spec SR5s.  The red is likely to be the main gigging bass with the burgundy as back up.  Or I might swap around if the vibe takes me.  Gigged them for the first time last week. Powerful basses, cut through so nicely. Sorry for the rubbish pic. The red has a nice grain to it.  Now I need to find another mm hardcase as only one came with one.

I was there. Thought the sound could have been better. His backing band were local students I think, what an opportunity for them!! I was grinning from ear to ear throughout, such a nice down to earth guy who can really tell a story. Great experience.

Yep, the bass mix was pretty poor considering that's what we were there to hear!  Good event though and Marcus played tastefully as always but let rip with some crazy double thumbing which was cool.  Nice guy.

  10. Traded a Dingwall for a Musicman with Paul.  Very easy transaction, arranged a meeting place and he even brought a portable amp so we could try the basses in the car park. Top guy, trade with confidence 👍
