I have a TC Electronic BG250-208

I'm in several bands / combos / outfits
The larger, louder, more rocky stuff I use a larger rig

I bought the TC for smaller gigs, or when I'm playing with a duo or trio
It's pretty light, in terms of lugging it about, and quite powerful, for such a small amp
There is also an output, to enable you to go through a PA - which can also be handy

Personally, I think the sound is pretty good
but sometimes (poss depending on venue) I can't quite seem to get the sound I'm really happy with
It's OK, but sometimes it seems to lack a little "bottom end", or the mid range tones seem a little harsh...

I also find that if I'm stood almost in front of it,
I can't hear myself too well - but that goes for many bass amps
Wedging something underneath, to tilt it slightly upwards helps a bit
Oddly enough, there have been times when I seem to hear myself, and think I'm too loud (when others think I'm not!)
..... again, this varies between venues and which bass I'm using

One reason I bought the amp, was to use with double bass, in acoustic duos & trios
again, it sounds fine - but not quite as good as I had anticipated
(I have 2 pickups installed on the DB, one transducer, and one with transducer + mic)
Using the trans/mic pickup with pre-amp, the sound is definitely more DB-like
using the DB transducer only, this amp tends to sound a little "flat"..... but again, I think that's to be expected

At 250W this amp does pack a bit of a punch, but it will depend on how loud the rest of the band are
and how many band members there are too.....
It's very portable, handy-sized and lightweight
For the money, I'd say it was fairly good

I was looking at the Markbass 208 combo,
and this is more than twice the output,
at a fraction of the price

Try one out in a shop, or see if you can find a friendly BC'er near you, who'll let you try theirs first

Other options are the new range of Fender Rumble amps
They are even lighter again.
I tried the Rumble 100 recently, and was surprised at how loud it was,
the quality of sound, and useful features, but I was stunned at how amazingly light it was
Mind you, they are more pricey!

Good luck with your search
Let us know what you find
Don't rule out buying second-hand.....

Hope this helps a bit

I read this as a poem :)

2. The Limelight debate could run and run. By all accounts they play very well, and if people are happy with them at that price (and many bassists are), then I guess that's ok. I'm not sure the base instrument is a £150 dog though.

The bigger issue / con - is the insane pricing of genuine vintage instruments. Just because it physically survived the last 40 years, doesn't mean it's worth £1,500. I'd wager the average Limelight bass is a better instrument than the majority of the £1-2k J's / P's being offered out there.

I have played on both, but not at the same time, so I don't think I can compare them very well, only know that they were both great to play.
What's the difference between active & passive?

If you thought they were both great to play - just go with the one you think looks the best. :)

Its not a bass but it is still a horrible looking guitar,

8 sold so far! And only £105. Guess after shipping and import duty, the joke would wear a bit thin.

I still hanker after a moth bass..

5. It’s finally here. Kissed a lot of frogs to find this one.

As foretold:
1) Much of the stuff out there is appalling

2) You never quite end up with what you set out for

3) All roads lead to Andy Baxter
Never owned a maple fingerboard before and never thought I would. But this is a bass to play, not hang on a wall, and this plays like a dream. Super thin quick neck (thinner than my American Std), fantastic variety of sound, real depth and resonance.
Big thank you to the fellow BC’ers who helped guide me home on this one.

Collected at lunch today and so keen to get involved, had a half hour headphone amp jam in the disabled toilet. :i-m_so_happy:

1972 Jazz, Maple / Sunburst, pearl blocks & bound, 4 bolt neck. 8.8lbs. Apart from the nut, all completely original. For the next few months at least - 'all the bass I'll ever need'

And here we are on our first date

Great clip. Whether you like Marr's music or not he always talks sense

Not in my case, it didn't. I use a Scotchbrite pad. I find it allows you to remove very thin layers of poly until you get what you want. I tend to go for an almost satin finish. It does no damage to the neck, you can always get the gloss look back if necessary.

That's encouraging to hear. I feared this was going to be an issue.
Incredible the lack of uniformity on necks even for same model / year. Spurs on the hunt that the right one is out there somewhere.

8. Having roadtested many 60's/70's J's now, I've found some vintage poly covered necks pretty 'sticky' once warmed up.

A cursory search online throws up everything from talcum powdered hands, sandpaper, and even luthier strip jobs.

Or is this just a non-issue that will go away once you're used to the instrument?
