Just getting a gripe off my chest......I have been playing bass for many a year now and like to think that my ear is good enough that I can get a close enough approximation of a bassline by listening to it. But I find that now whenever I need to learn a bass part I reach straight for the dodgy youtube clips of people playing the lines. Even if their wrong it gives me the general impression of the line and saves me doing the hard work of working it out by ear.

It is way too easy now and I can totally understand why people use them or tabs to learn bass parts, but this has to come at a price when you are
    learning to play.

I have, what limited musical ear I have, because I had no choice but to sit down and pick out a bassline bit by bit which could take weeks. It's a shame that no-one really needs to do this anymore and it can only limit future generations musical ears which is so vital, not just for learning songs but for improvisation and last minute dep work.

    It's a shame.......that's all.

Not really my experience. Youtube has helped me crack a few tunes in the past, where notation didn't exist and my ear fell short. The lightbulb moment where you realise how something was played is the important bit, less important is how you get there.

Agree ear training is vital (and IMO, so is reading music), but tab / videos can all help.

I was never a massive fan of their stuff, but I worked on a few of their shows and they are amongst the most energetic live acts around.
Sometimes it's nice to see a band that actually work for their ticket money rather than just standing there.

+1. Been dragged to both live. There are few less inspiring gigs than Oasis.

  3. 'All this Mayhem'

Utterly gripping documentary from the team that made Senna. The 'sport' is skateboarding BUT don't let that put you off. It's the human tale around this that is being told and the sport is incidental.

Along with One Day In September, one of the best documentaries made in recent years.

  4. I have just bought a Focusrite 2i2. I am having difficulty getting it to record. I will have to get the manual printed. I hate it when you don`t get a basic manual. Is the Ableton Live 9 Lite that comes with a free trial any good, or should i look at getting a better programme?

    Try this;

Go to the Audio track, select 'Audio From' drop down

    Click Configure

This will take you to the Preferences screen

Audio Input device - assuming you've got the driver loaded (or sometimes it will just recognise it anyway) - you should be able to select your Focusrite on this drop down >

Red X top left to save and close, takes you back to the audio channel, and select Channel 1 from the drop down.

Hit the 'record' button at base of that channel, and you should be able to hear whatever you've plugged in, your bass etc.

(These shots are from Live8 but almost identical).
  5. After a fretted 5, and the new Sire Marcus Miller V7 has stirred something in me.

Pornographic unboxing on the Other site hasn't helped - here's a 4 being paraded. No 'official' reviews yet but initial user reports positive.

Think might have to be the 5 in natural ash / maple.

...my impressions of the show from here are limited stands, with lots of people slapping everywhere
Yeah if you can't tune out the mass slap fest, a bass show isn't the best environment.

Does anyone else sometimes read it as the LGBS show? Something quite different.

  7. *****SOLD********

Brand spanking new. Completely unmarked, all original packaging.

Bought new in Dec, then a B3 unexpectedly came my way. Missed the return window to Thomann, and seems pointless having this just sat here.

If you're reading this, you probably know what these are and what incredible value they represent - not just 100+ FX, but internal rhythms, looper, tuner, 3.5mm audio input. Amazing bit of kit for the money.

Price £35 posted. Sale only no trades.

I constantly wish that I was born in the 60s, or 70s because the state of the music industry and the way its using sex

I'm bored of hearing songs about 'Da Club', 'Pimping', and 'Drinking from da bottle'. Music now has absolutely no message or substance behind it and because of that the only 'movement' you are going to get from me is turning the radio off and plugging my ipod in...

Take me back and send me to the 60s I say...
The 60's and 70's weren't that different. If you only judged the music scene by what surfaced to radio or TV - Beatles etc aside - was mainly bilge.

There's still great music going on today that won't make the radio or TV. Don't hang a generation on Miley Cyrus! :)
