1. I'm looking for a bass buddy, anyone in Cheshunt Herts or near can meet up occasionally and help teach the basics? I've had my bass for over 2 years a good Fender jazz AVRI and really need to start learning properly. Work and family commitments, two kids over the last couple of years has held me back a bit, the've had to come first. I've tried the online lessons thing, doesn't work for me. I love all styles of music especially disco, funk etc., just want to be able to pick it up and play at home. My favourite bass players are: Bobby Vega, Donald Duck Dunn, Norman Watt Roy, John Paul Jones. Thanks in advance! Thanks Darren
2. Chic featuring Nile Rogers is like saying the Jackson 5 featuring Michael. Still a great bunch of live performers and Jerry Barnes does a good job.
3. Thanks for all the recommendations guys!!
4. Hi all, I'm thinking of buying a precision bass, (preferably one thats well worn in) but I'm put off a little by the wide necks I keep seeing. I already have a 62' AVR Jazz Bass and love the really slim neck. I also thought about a 62' AVRI Precision but the necks look so fat on those. Where should I be looking and am I right in saying during the early seventies Fender started producing Precision basses with slimmer necks. Thanks Darren
5. I've watched a few you tube videos today (thanks to the guys on here who linked them) and got home and put the new strings on. The E string was a bit of a struggle, I trimmed around 5 inches above the tuning peg on each string, folded the string at about 1.5 cm (to fit in the holes) and got a good low wind onto the pegs. Once they were all done and tightened up a bit I stuck on the tuner and bingo! I did notice that the neck had straightend out a bit over night, so I'll leave it again and check tomorrow as before it did have a very, very slight curve. If it plays up, I'll get a technician to have a look. Thanks again for all the help and advice.
6.
if you need help in re-drawing the correct Fender logo, I could help. I do it for a living.
http://www.guitar-decals.com/
7.
That's the one. Yes, Gary Mac told me about them.
if you need help in re-drawing the correct Fender logo, I could help. I do it for a living.
8. I've learn't my first lesson: Don't let wife touch bass, look but don't touch!
9.
What type of music are you planning to play? That will have a lot to do with the type of string and the gauge you choose and I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet but it would seem to be the first thing to consider. This will also affect how you set up your bass. Ooops, just got the posting re your string purchase before I could send this, sounds like a reasonable choice though. Have fun.
I'm into all music styles, but would like to learn basics as I'm a complete beginner and still getting fingers stuck between the strings and fret board! lol
10.
Sounds great. Then, when you've fitted the strings, you can take a look at the series of 4 videos on setting up your bass. This is the first: http://youtu.be/te44...E8ecP3gzyysiiMr If you have any questions, just post here.
Thanks, I saw those videos before, but I don't want to tamper with truss rod, after seeing my wife snap the string last night when tuning i realise how fragile they are!
11.
That's one of the things I really like about BC - there's always some friendly type on here offering to let someone try out their bass, amp or pedal, or someone willing to give up time to help others. What a kind offer Grangur Re gauges of strings, yes, they differ in gauge - it might be best to take your broken string along to the shop with you, to compare gauges. It is possible (well online anyway) to get single strings - maybe you can pick up a single string, so you have a whole set of spares? Good luck with your new start on bass, and take Grangur up on his kind offer. Don't forget to look out for the next local bass-bash event near you. There you'll meet other players, who may help, advise & support you, as well as let you play with their amps etc EDIT: If you buy a new set of strings in a different gauge, you will possibly need to set your bass up accordingly i.e. you may need to make adjustments to the bridge, and or tweak the truss rod - please take care and read up / watch youtube videos before doing this, or better still, get some other kindly BC'er to help you out, or let a local luthier do this
Thanks Marc, Bishops Stortford is a little too far for me, really kind of you to offer. Much appreciated!
12.
hey mate, Jazz basses love nickel roundwounds imho I've used D'Addario Nickel rounds 45-105 guage for over 30 years and never had a dud string. really consistent sound from set to set. I'd recommend them, as they can handle the bass heaviness of soloing the neck pup and the brightness needed on the bridge pickup. It's a pretty good allrounder tone-wise I can get deep James Jamerson tone by using the neck pickup with the tone rolled down, and Geddy Lee or Chris Squire by turning the tone knob to max, and all points in between
I got those D'Addario Nickel rounds 45-105 for £23.50 Thank you!
13.
I'm in London today. I have a lecture until 4, I'm free then until 7 when I catch my train home. No problem meeting up for a bit, I'll run you through changing your strings and using your tuner. PM if you want, and I'll give you my number.
Thanks Ambient, thats really kind of you to offer your help, I need to dash early today to get home. I really appreciate your offer. Thanks D
14. Thanks so much for all your kind comments and suggestions. Today I went to Denmark St and got some D'Addario Nickel rounds 45-105, I will attempt to put them on this week. I've watched a few you tube tutorials so hopefully I can do the job. Thanks D
15. Thanks Cato, I'm going to Denmark St tomorrow, I work near by so I'll pick some up at lunchtime. I'll put up here what ones I get. Thanks
16. Thanks Ambient, I think it has sound wounds on at the moment, so I might just get those again. Should I look out for gauge, thickness? I bought a clip on tuner, it has a guitar, bass and another setting and lights up green. I couldn't figure it out so my wife had ago and broke the string. Anyone near Cheshunt, Herts that can offer beginners lessons, I've had the bass for nearly 2 years and can't even tune it!
17. Hi all, I'm a complete beginner and don't get to post on here much but my wife was tuning up my bass and broke a string as she tightened it up too much it snapped near the tuning peg. It's an American vintage 1962 reissue. What would be the best strings to buy for that bass, round wound or flats, I know they sound different. Some strings have red or blue thread at the ends, what's the puropse of this? Thanks
18. Thank you all for replying! I'm gradually gaining my knolledge on Fender basses... Mr.Noisey, Regarding the 64 reissue; that had a thinner laminate fret board and it looks too thin and fragile in my opinion, did that give it a particualr sound or was that a cost cutting thing as time went on during the early sixties? With regards to the frets, the vintage ones are alot thinner, how does this differ from the larger fatter ones like you see on te new basses? Also, I've noticed that with some Jazz Basses especially the older ones that the body contour shape is slightly different, I mean curve where the neck is there is some kind of bump, I've seen this on the vintage reissues but not on the new american standard, can anyone shed some light on this? Cheers D
19. Hi Basschatters, This may have been discussed on here before, if so sorry to bring up the subject again. Can anyone tell me the real difference between the Fender Classic Series ’60s Jazz Bass and the Fender Jazz Bass American Vintage ’62 Reissue? I know that one is made in Mexico and the other in the US and that American reissue has the stack volume and tone controls, but take those away and it’s virtually the same as the Classic Series isn't it?. So, if you took them both apart bit by bit would you know the difference? Thanks in advance
20. Hi Thanks for the reply, I've not logged on for a while as my wife had our second child, I'm just starting to get back into learning.
