I know where you are coming from. One of the bands I am playing for use IEM's and I haven't used a backline for the past 8 gigs. All I take is my EBS Reidmar amp and run the DI parallel with my Radial Stage Bug. I can usually hide that kit somewhere on the stage. So, no backline visible whatsoever. My entire rig is pretty much useless for this band. I'm actually thinking about buying an EBS Microbass II and just use that on my pedalboard along with the Radial. Bass, pedalboard, bag full of leads....done! Can't think of a more portable

The only plus point (audibly) from the other night (the gig and the crowd were amazing) was that I loved having that aggression back again off the EBS HD350 and the Berg. It's just a great tone, especially when I dig in and give it some with the Spector. I've said to Russ offline that if I could get the tone of the HD350/Berg/EMGs into my IEMs and out front, I'd be as happy as a canine with two appendages.

Want to have something that will give me the tone of an expensive mic in front of the Berg along with a top quality DI.

Ideas? Would investing in a Reidmar with a 1x12 Berg or 1x12 Proline and an expensive mic be the answer? Love the aggression/authority of a "amp" tone but want not the grief.

  2. We played The Jam House in Brum last night and it was the first gig in ages that we've done without IEMs.

Can't believe the difference in using "traditional" monitoring again. Our vocalists really struggled all night with the volume of the monitoring, felt so much less controlled and much harder to hear the band and the separation of individual instruments.

After 2 x 1hr sets, we call came off stage noticeably more tired and somewhat deafer. Made us all realise that since going fully IEM, it's made such an improvement to our performances and our enjoyment of gigging.

In other news, Tonyf? Where are you?

Ok, sorry, sorry, sorry. Just been a bit busy gigging and erm playing with my new 1964 Ears V8s :D

Truly astonishing they are, Russ did his usual trick of convincing me to buy stuff that I hadn't even thought about buying. Gotta say, they've absolutely blown me away.

Paul from The Custom IEM Company was up in Birmingham so I met up, had the impressions made and he showed me some of the demo pairs he'd got with him and was able to compare the V3s and the V6s with my Shure SE535s. With some advice from him and Russ, decided the V8s were the way to go.

Ordered them on a "rush order" and got them 2 1/2 weeks later when I got back from holidays last week.

Astonishing they are. So precise, a massive soundstage and just ridiculous amounts of bottom end. The first couple of numbers I played, I could "feel" the bass and kept asking Mrs TonyF if she could hear them. Of course she couldn't because of the isolation.

Of course they cost an astonishing amount of money but IMHO, worth every penny. Russ put it succinctly when he said it was like investing in a Bergantino cab for each ear and I truly get this view. It's totally changed my view of IEMs now, I'm seriously wondering whether or not the money I've got invested in my backline could be rationised to a small 1x12 with a micro head and a REALLY good DI such as an Avalon or Radial. In terms of what's behind me on stage, I don't really hear it anymore so it seems pointless in having all that kit.

  4. I maybe biased but I've not needed to look at another cab since I brought the CN212 last year. It's been an absolute revelation, easily the best cab I've owned (and that's been a fair few ;) )

One of the cabs I was considering at the time was the GB NX2 212T, particularly as my Streamliner was the amp of choice at that time. The reviews were really glowing on the 212T and I tried one out. Loved it. However, I loved the Berg just a little more. Why? Just think the Berg was a little more open, very marginally more articulate and a wee bit more cultured. Again though, all IMHO and as with a lot of these things, it's not which one is "better", it's which one you think suits you.

Whichever way you go, both the GB NX2 212T and the Berg CN212 are absolutely fantastic cabs so I'd forget what everyone else says and go with the one you prefer.

  5. Having never been that bothered before in previous bands, we're now full on "uniformed" in Second City Soul, the functions band I'm in. We've put a lot of effort into the image of the band from a marketing and visual side of things and the stage wear is all part of the deal. When people are hiring you at considerable expense for important events such as weddings etc, rucking up in a pair of levis and an old t-shirt "because that's how we roll" isn't either professional or appropriate. IMHO.

We've gone the full monty, even with the "corporate" polo's and hoodies that we use when we're setting up and breaking down (easier for clients and staff to identify the band when we arrive at venues) and TBH, it's made such a difference to how we feel as a unit and how we approach each gig. In fact, I've even gone as far as having my IEMs in the corporate "colours" (with my incoming 1964 Ears with the band logo). Detail, friends, details. ;)

  6. My leads are always attached. Before I had the new floor mounted Sony wireless, I always used to run through the effects loop but now, the "signal in" is always the Sony receiver which sits on the board itself. The last lead is out to the input of the amp and I've bound this (with a spare lead) to the extension socket that sits on the board to power the PSUs so that I always plug in the board at the amp end. When packing away, I just curl up this "umbilical" and put it back into the Swan Flight floor board case. Quick, easy and safe.

It's all coming from the EBS amp and speaker - nothing else gets a sound like that!

+1 with the EBS tone, especially with the NeoLine cabs. Quite "drumsticks on bedsprings" if you play with the character switch and scoop the mids. lol

  8. Yeah. I've been chatting to the Custom IEM Company chap. The 1964 V6s look lush but I need to try them out. The sleeves on the SE535s are great but have been difficult to pull out easily. Really need an all in one unit and if I'm going to do that, I should really look at whether or not it's time for an "upgrade" to try and keep my position as band "IEM champion", especially with someone else now having a pair of SE535s. lol

    Good spot! :P

What he said. I've been as happy as a canine with an extra appendage with my Sony.

IMHO, brilliantly simple and so well engineered. Love the fact that it sits silently and efficiently doing it's thing on my pedal board. The transmitter is built like a tank too.

  10. It was 6 or 7 years ago but I ordered my blue sparkle Modulus Flea from Beaver and the guys at Bass Central.

TBH, aside from my usual string order from the geezers at String Busters, it's been one of the best online deals I've done. Ordered it on the Monday evening after some emails between me and the shop and then a phone call and the UPS guy was delivering it on the Thursday. Considering the distances involved, it was mightily impressive, especially considering that my experience of most UK retailers at that time was that most of them struggled to get stuff to me within the week. Glad that times have changed.

Anyway, I digress. Beaver and his team are seriously knowledgeable, very customer focused and ultimately nice relaxed folks.

In terms of import taxes etc, UPS took the payment which, from what I can recall, may have been £150 to £200. Still a great deal on what would have been an impossibly expensive (and hard to get hold of) bass this side of the pond.

  11. The only problem purchase (touch wood) I've had over the years is a Gumtree one.

Brought a pedal off some f*ckwad who invented excuse after excuse over three or four weeks after I paid him. Eventually called Gumtree who marked his account as fraudulent thus calling in the law and lo-and-behold, the pedal magically arrived in due course.

Sometimes pays to call them up. Ultimately, they want to keep the brand "clean" so will be just as keen to get rid of any shannagans.

  12. Just caved after weeks of ummming and arrrring. Brought my ticket for Sunday as I was "convinced" by a couple of mates going down from West Middle Englandshire.

Was going to do Saturday but I've got a gig on Saturday night and would rather not be late back for that. Not that getting up at "WTFO'Clock" on the Sunday to hit the road, Jack.
