  6. Hi, As a long time 34 years Rickenbacker player i just had to review the latest offering from Rickenbacker. i have been using rics for a long time, i have owned some really good sounding instruments others not so good. Iwas diagnosed with a nerve condition in my neck and advised to give up playing bass. difficult to do when you enjoy playing the thing!!! I sold all my Rickenbacker,s off. but a few weeks after doing this i realised there is more to owning a ric, i found i could not be happy without one being in the house i had to have one, tried to kid myself that i could survive without one lol. I just could not, can,t explain it but i just had to have one. So i decided i was going for a brand new model 2012!!!, i initially was going to buy a midnight blue 4003 from a store in glasgow, i had the bass put aside for me, and as i am fussy as can be asked the poor guy in the shop to go over the bass and check it out for me before i ventured into the store. I was kind of shocked when he called me a few hours later to tell me he had found a flaw with the 4003, the chrome on the tailpiece had bubbled up and he sent me pics to show me the fault. me being me i could not accept that bass no matter how good it sounded!!! So what now?? they only had the one in stock. later that day the shop called me to say that the uk Rickenbacker rep was in scotland, he had a brand new mapleglo 4003 with him, it had just arrived from the states, would i be interested in that at the same price £1550. of course i was interested i was in the store next morning not only was it awesome looking it also sounded great too, i have to say out of all the Rickenbackers i have owned this one is really top notch. Fit and finish is 10/10 for me, i have been all over the bass looking for flaws, none found . the body is made from the finest maple, it is the first time i have owned a natural finish Rickenbacker, it is a pleasure to look at the beautiful grain on the body and neck, the caribbean rosewood fretboard is just stunning with the high gloss varnish on the fingerboard. hardware is spotless, also the feel of the neck is just right not to thick or thin, just right, the bass was actually very well set up out of the case, all i had to do was adjust the treble pickup pushed it a bit higher on the E side changed the strings to Rotosound swing 66 roundwounds and the bass was singing. I know there have been issues with Rickenbacker basses recently but if this one is anything to go by, i would not hesitate to buy a new one now, i can not recommend enough, just make sure you play the bass before you buy, i would not buy one blind from the internet.

  7. Hi, I have just purchased a new 2012 4003 mapleglo, i have been playing rics for 34 years and the new ones are just the best ever 2012 model!! fit&finish is 10/10, tone is awesome for a brand new Rickenbacker, i can not recommend a new one enough, you will pay £1200 for a decent used one, i got a good deal on my new one and was only £300 more than a used one so i would buy new that way you have a mint instrument no one else has played, my favourite 4003 was a 1999 jetglo, this new one sounds as good, just shop around and make sure you play the bass before you buy. good luck.

  14. this one will be staying with me spongebob. cheers
  15. my problem is mechanical, the nerves coming off my spinal cord are being crushed by bone so no cures, it is too dangerous to operate on so physio and pain killers are my only option. my mind is settled now i am happy to have a rick and had great fun playing last night, that bass is just a pleasure to play. before it was the thought of the cost of the 4003 versus use!!! i dont care now happy to have the bass and enjoy it when i can. thanks for all the comments guys. George
  16. cant argue with that.
  17. i intend to beedster, i have realised they are part of me , just feel lucky to have a great example. cheers
  18. thanks for all the comments guys, i appreciate them. the neck on this one i would say is fairly skinny, i had tried the limited run of walnut burst models and those necks were really chunky my opinion, the grain on the neck is just incredible the caribbean rosewood, the E string is spot on on this bass also, always a worry on rics. honestly no complaints with this bass growling straight out the case, all i had to do was raise the treble pickup slightly and restrung with rotosounds. excellent bass. very happy to have a rickenbacker at my side, i had great fun today playing and was pain free. thanks guys. George
  19. Cheers guys, i will be playing sitting down, and will play as long as i can, better than not playing at all, and the rickenbacker is a beauty, i feel normal again lol, i tried using a cheap bass, just was not the same.
  20. As a few of you guys know i was diagnosed with a nerve condition affecting my neck and was advised to give up playing bass!!!, i have always had a rickenbacker 4003 with me the past 30 years, sold the ones i had on basschat. but as the weeks went past i just had to have a rick in the house i cant explain. so managed to get a new 4003 today only manufactured 3 weeks ago!!! first time mapleglo for me and i must say the quality is outstanding as is the tone and i am fussy. this one came direct from the Rickenbacker rep in the uk . it is just flawless, i feel normal again i was getting all frustrated not having a 4003 in the house lol, glad to see it back.
