  1. Lovely basses and one with the pickup logos intact.  Is this an 'inside out' BB - I think this is the designation for myrtle facings and walnut core (it's usually the other way around)?  These sound outrageous - typical Alembic but with quite an organic twist in my experience.

  2. I saw something similar a couple of days ago and was quite surprised at the revival of the format - I think this was some sort of classic album and taken from original masters - about £1200.  I was aware that there's a very strong market for Studer and Revox machines (prices have increased dramatically in recent years) but the release of pre-recorded open-reel does seem strange - I imagine there's a small but (affluent and) enthusiastic market.  Personally, I don't really miss the hiss of open reel machines or the crackle of vinyl.

  3. Is the bass a 'standard' 30" shortscale or is it sub short-scale?  I'm sure we can come-up with suggestions (though it gets a little more tricky with sub short-scale).  It might be worth taking a look at Newtone - they have dedicated short-scale sets available but can custom wind pretty much anything:

  4. For sale, a Hipshot Kickass bridge (4 string) in chrome.  This has been hanging around in a drawer with lots of other bridges and bits and bobs.  It looks new though I suspect it's been fitted previously (but not by me).  It comes with the adjustment key, 5 screws and the replacement/extra saddles shown in the image.  It's a standard replacement Fender pattern.  The bridges sometimes come with a couple of springs but the latter weren't supplied when I bought the bridge.  I should be able to ship for around £3.00 in the UK.  Any questions please just ask

  5. I have no real detail or further information but just saw a 'we're back' banner on the Hiscox site.  The company now appears to be operating/trading our of Poland, at least that's where enquiries are directed.  Proudly Hand-Made in England could become Proudly Hand-Made in Poland.  According to the banner, shipping is scheduled to re-start in late September:

  6. I'm not an expert but I owned one for a while.  Possibly the most incredible bass tone I've heard (they're utterly unique) but ergonomically a nightmare.  I really found the bass to be unplayable either standing or sitting.  A real shame as the L2s are such an iconic bass.  Images really would be helpful here and good to know if you have any specific questions.

I wanted some new cables a while back and asked myself 'what does the man who can afford anything get?'. David Gilmour uses Evidence cables and so I got those.

@rumblefish and I did a 3-way comparison with cables at various price points and the Evidence was noticably better (to our ears). Quie an investment, obviously, but one I was happy to make.

I did the same with a designacable Mogami and Lyric HG. I understand the snake oil arguments and agree to a large extent. I use ATC powered monitors and when I asked the company for cable recommendations, was told just good quality cable and connectors – nothing special required.  However, back to bass cables: in my comparison, there was a small but noticeable difference – one cable wasn’t ‘better’ than the other, though I preferred the Evidence Audio - a little more presence in certain frequencies (mainly upper-mids). It wasn’t a blind test and there could be price-influenced prejudice/expectations or some imagination involved. On repeating, I had the same perception and preference. Make of this what you will – I still use both cables extensively and I’m happy with them pretty much equally. Good cable, good connectors and attention to detail in construction to ensure robustness. Plus careful coiling and storage, and even greater care in who gets near your cables. It’s difficult to go wrong really.

  8. I've had very good results with Designacable, and especially these:

    https://www.designacable.com/mogami-ultimate-3368-guitar-cable-all-neutrik-1-4-mono-jack-types-low-capacitance.html

Not a cheap option, but flexible, very well constructed and apparently robust.

Vovox look excellent, though if venturing into that kind of territory, Evidence Audio also offer an exceptional range.  The Lyric HG is very stiff and I wouldn't recommend it for general live use (though superb for recording).  The Forte is a heavy cable, but perfectly flexible and again, characterised by exceptional build quality and robustness.

Lots of good advice in the posts above too.

  9. Perfect transaction with Stew (as expected!) Really easy and friction free - fantastic comms and friendly throughout. As it should be and Stew is an absolute pillar of our community!

There are many things which need proper packing materials. I suspect this does not. The only thing being protected would be the courier.

Got a Grabber to go with it? 🤣

This is entirely true Owen - there’s a brutal, handsome beauty to the case, with the emphasis firmly on the brutal.

Sadly no Grabber, but I still have the Ripper that lived in this case for decades. The bass is currently enjoying a refurb

    Dat sensitivity control tho'!

I'd concur entirely Owen!  The eq is smooth, predictable and effective, but the sensitivity is the real magic in the Monique - especially the interaction between gain and sensitivity.  I genuinely haven't heard anything like it.  That said, for me, the Monique comes to life when used with passive basses, and I no longer have any of the latter.  All of my basses are modern sounding actives (and short-scale to boot, not that scale length has anything to do with it)

  12. For sale, a Jule Monique preamp in excellent cosmetic and functional condition.  There's so much written about these that any comment from me seems fairly pointless - possibly the most desirable valve front end for bass out there?  I've had this, a Noble, a DB680 and various other valve pres and for me, the Monique is the most versatile and useful.  Quality is off the scale as one would expect - boutique, hand-built and lovely in every respect. This one has been re-valved with premium valves by a previous owner.  I'm only selling as I don't use it.  Weird I know, but I prefer SS pres and have a PR40 that's always on.  Just one note, and for full disclosure, there are a few faint marks in the paint at the bottom of the left side panel - please see image, though the latter exaggerates a little (a screwdriver slip?) - it hasn't bothered me and I'm pretty obsessive about such things, but the marks are there.

Collection in Manchester would be much preferred (an esoteric pre full of exotic glass).  I can ship if required (very carefully packed) but at the buyer's risk and expense - obviously, with insurance.

No trades or offers thanks - the Monique is now very expensive indeed, and not too easily sourced.  Any questions, please just ask.

  13. For sale, a Hipshot Kickass 4 string bridge in Chrome - this is in excellent condition, and unused as far as I know. It’s been stuck in a g

drawer for years. It comes with spare saddle inserts but only four screws(?) - I suspect any buyer would use the original bridge screws anyway in any replacement scenario.

Collection in Manchester or I can ship in the UK at cost.

    Any questions, please just ask.

  14. For sale, a gig-bag for Explorer and Thunderbird basses - supplied by Thomann - the item number is: EXP-BG20.6R/6.

This was bought new around three weeks ago (£36) and has only been used to store a bass for a couple of weeks.  Essentially, its about as close as one might find to a new bag and still has its tag.

Collection in Manchester is good, though I should be able to fold and ship for around £6 (at the buyers risk and cost).

Any questions, please just let me know.

  15. For sale, Status bag for a Streamline, though I'm pretty sure that this will fit a number of stick/cricket bat style basses.  This is almost new and has only been used to store a bass.  Cheap and cheerful - there's some padding but the bag is fairly light overall.

Collection in East Manchester or I should be able to ship in the UK for around £5 (folded and wrapped in strong plastic).

No trades or offers thanks - any questions, please just ask.
