1.
I would leave this bass well alone unless you're looking for something you can trash with a guilt free conscience. The timber used is likely to be any old job lot they could get in on the cheap.
I wasn't planning on buying it, I just noticed it.

  2. Here's his latest words to me:
" yOU HAVE A GOOD POINT!!! MY MUSICIAN FRIEND SAID IT WAS GRAPHITE, SO ILE TALK TO HIM SOON AS I CAN FIND HIM. CHHERS FOR INFO."

    He concedes at last!

"There is something funny about the neck: Have a look at the photo of the back of the headstock. see the join just above the first tuner?"; says merchant.

It looks like there's a definite join there, but I'd have thought it would be easier to put graphite rods in from the heel end. I think it's just a cheapo construction method. That join could proove a weakspot.

Quite a few basses feature graphite rods in the neck, but I don't reckon Gould would have gotten into that way of making necks.

Or so I see it until proved otherwise..

  3. I wasn't aware that (budget brand) Gould had branched out into composite necks. Oh hang on a minute, they haven't!

    ebay bass

I sent this guy a message telling him the neck wasn't made of graphite, to which he responded with a single line: "The base of the neck is graphite". Nice spelling. What a toilet!

Surely this is a misleading listing? Unless Gould have pioneered a type of graphite that looks like wood and is really cheap to manufacture; which I very much doubt.

    Any thoughts guys?

I have two bridges for sale on Ebay, both originally from GB basses. One is for a 4 string, one for a 5. Both are used but in good condition. Here's the links if you are interested:

Hope they go to a good home.

Are they designed for top loading or through body stringing (or both)? I couldn't really tell from the pictures.
    Cheers.

  5.
Hi OHM,

Here's a link to my Musicman Sub 5 that is in the For sale forum: Musicman Sub 5 For Sale

It's a great bass which is surplus to my requirements now as I have just acquired a Lakland DJ5 to go for a more passive, vintage jazz bass sound. But if you like the MM Bongo sound, then this might be for you as it has a specially designed John East active circuit that emulates the classic Stingray 4 sound but also has also has a sweepable mid e.q. control for further tonal flexibility!

    Nik
That Sub 5 looks flipping sweet!

  6.
not sure about the sweeties though.
I've ordered bass and guitar strings from this lot, probably 4 or 5 separate orders, and they always turn up with bizarre American hard boiled sweets in the packaging. I kid you not.

I thought it may have been a cunning way to fool customs into thinking it was a 'gift' package and not just something I'd bought off the net. If it was, it's working well.

The white spearmint ones are pretty nice!

  7. This was the closest thing I could find, which probably isn't that useful. Maybe they can help you out with specs if you contact them?

  8.
Cheers for the heads up. I've just purchased a batch, even though I don't play 5 string!
They do them in 4 string sets as well!
I've bought them before and they normally turn up with a few American sweets (still wrapped) in the packaging.

  9.
I have noticed this myself on some strings, and that the silks are not wound to an equal length on the E,A,D & G string.
I can't think of any reason for this not to be so, as whether they are on a 2 a side headstock (eg. Warwick) or 4 in line (eg Fender), the length from the ball end to the nut is the same on all strings. (ok, within a small amount maybe, like allowing for the shape of the Warwick tailpiece). The silks could be wound so as they all end level before the nut.
I used to use Elites on my Warwicks and the silks stopped just before the nut, then one set I got, the silk on the E string went over. I thought this may have been a bad string so took it back and the dealer opened all the sets of Elites he had and they were all the same, shorter distance between ball end and silk on the E strings. Sloppy workmanship.
Do Elites still have the red or black silk on their strings? I think I have bought a set that were plain.
I once bought a set of Elites 'player' nickel strings and they had no silks on them. The last set of elites 'stadium' strings I bought had navy blue at one end and red at the other end.

I've noticed the silk winding sometimes creeping over the nut as well. My solution? Use a razor blade to trim the blighter back!
Most of the strings I buy these days don't have silk windings, except for the odd pack of elites or rotosound.

  10. The quality of my playing is inversely proportional to how much I've quaffed.
Me and the singer/guitarist normally make our drummer drive us everywhere, so I've had plenty of attempts at playing semi-wasted. Always the same outcome.

Now I don't normally like more than 2 or 3 pints before going onstage. I leave the big-time drinking 'til after we've finished our set. I've even been known to order pints of shandy if there's a long time between us landing up and actually taking the stage.

  11.
Yes you get better gear for more money but at the end of the day the reason you won't go back to Peavey is because you will have joined the ranks of the 'Amp Snobs' :)
Very true.

+1 for having a TNT as a first 'proper' amp. I then progressed to a Peavey rig that I've still got. Those 4x10 cabs used to cost close to £300!

I say go for it, then tell us how you've got on.

  12.
I thought £7 for some Hartke strings on eBay was cheap, I'd go for it and just try them out.
I did as well, and was pleasantly surprised with the Hartke strings. Compared well to their D'Addario equivalents!
