I agree to a certain extent. I for instance can play a large number of pieces, but have never felt the urge to film myself playing them and post it on facetube. However, I do know some people have used this medium to promote themselves and get gigs from it. Look at that wee dude that's singing with Journey!

There's other women out in YouTube land who flaunt far more and it don't bother me a jot. If someone can play then kudos to them. To be honest if anyone posts a YouTube video on basschat, it will get slaughtered by certain people at some point. Art is subjective and you ain't gonna please all the people all the time

I remember years ago , being really excited that Heavy Pettin had put a song in for song for Europe. A completely shameless publicity stunt which prevented their descent into memory by a few months !

That sounds like a good way to get a couple of free sets of strings!

We played a gig recently and one of the songs had two guitar solos in it. During the first, I was struggling to hear him. After we finished, a friend in the audience said, we couldn't hear the lead at the start, to which I relayed to said guitarist. He replied, " when I started I hit the boost pedal twice by mistake" I thought, " why the f*** couldn't you hit it three times then?"

Obviously, he couldn't concentrate on more than one thing!

Thing is, these " styles" move in cycles. Bands will come into fashion in pubs again. Trouble is, it might be after we have gotten too old. I remember when we started out, no one wanted live bands. It was all discos. We couldn't understand it because just a few years before bands had been doing great in our home town. Gradually we got a toe in and then really took off. Now it's back to discos, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time before live music becomes fashionable again.

We still get gigs but they are definitely not as prolific as they were, so if it was to dry up, I think that would be the reason as I can't see me stopping anytime soon, as long as we get bookings. Obviously health could be a factor which no one can foresee.
Touch wood, I'm gonna keep on keepin on for a long while yet!

We still gig, so I couldn't possibly say what I would do. I suppose if you have definitely given up playing and there's no chance of ever playing again, I might visit the possibility of selling, but I still like having a collection for looking at even if I wasn't playing them. I do play them all by the way.

I tried my P through my MXR Sans amp and an SVT2 and Barefaced Super twin, turned the treble up on the bass, used a pick and I got the JJ tone spot on . It's just a subtle nice distortion you get from the pedal , not too harsh.

I tried same settings with a Les Paul bass and it sounded different. Good, but not JJ good. Same with Spector .

So it seems quite easy to achieve if you have the right distortion, treble pushed and an aggressive technique.

My opinion of course

I have now given the Beck album a fair few listens and can now say, is not really good, it's bloody brilliant! I would like to say thanks once again to Kanye for giving me the interest in downloading it !
