Well, quite a lot really. A gig is a real time social occassion with direct interaction with othe musicians Possibly) and an audience. Also you are doing it live - One take only.
Sitting in a bedroom playing into a camera with a backing track seems (to me ) to be the antithesis of social interaction.

And, for the record, I freely admit that the player in the original posting completely knocks spots off anything I'll ever be able to do. But I still can't understand this compulsion people seem to have to post everything on the bloody net (Other than the money thing, or the publicity thing - but even then you'd surely be better off gigging, for both the money and the exposure).

I agree to a certain extent. I for instance can play a large number of pieces, but have never felt the urge to film myself playing them and post it on facetube. However, I do know some people have used this medium to promote themselves and get gigs from it. Look at that wee dude that's singing with Journey!

Everything I dislike about Guns 'n' Roses in one video. Axl's weird contorted singing voice, that thick sludgy Les Paul tone, the weedy watery bass tone... too much coke in this video.

And that my friend is what cements my statement that art is subjective. I like Guns, I like the guitar sound, I like Axls voice, I like Duffs sound. It's great that we don't all like the same things innit?

  3. There's other women out in YouTube land who flaunt far more and it don't bother me a jot. If someone can play then kudos to them. To be honest if anyone posts a YouTube video on basschat, it will get slaughtered by certain people at some point. Art is subjective and you ain't gonna please all the people all the time

We will never win, because the rest of Europe doesn't like us, because we openly laugh at them and their best efforts.

It isn't cheesy and naff to the other countries and it shouldn't be to us. The UK's superior, snotty and condescending attitude to the competition would piss me off if I was an entrant.

The BBC in allowing the idiot Wogan to drunkenly take the piss out of the other songs and the competition in general for so many years has guaranteed us nil point, and rightly so.

Mein Gott!! I thought sir Terence was the best thing about it!

  5. We played a gig recently and one of the songs had two guitar solos in it. During the first, I was struggling to hear him. After we finished, a friend in the audience said, we couldn't hear the lead at the start, to which I relayed to said guitarist. He replied, " when I started I hit the boost pedal twice by mistake" I thought, " why the f*** couldn't you hit it three times then?"

Obviously, he couldn't concentrate on more than one thing!

    Hostile/punative venues...

Potential audiences stay at home now... massive cultural change over last 20 years - look at the rise in super-market alcohol sales and correlate to pubs closing.

When audiences do appear, they generally don't want bands any more - only tunes they recognise are 'classics'/featured in films/featured in X-Factor/Radio which leads me to my next point...

Guitar-driven bands old fashioned in this era of Urban/R&B which has been the dominant style form for a little while now.

Thing is, these " styles" move in cycles. Bands will come into fashion in pubs again. Trouble is, it might be after we have gotten too old. I remember when we started out, no one wanted live bands. It was all discos. We couldn't understand it because just a few years before bands had been doing great in our home town. Gradually we got a toe in and then really took off. Now it's back to discos, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time before live music becomes fashionable again.

I just have no desire whatsoever to entertain other people.

When I've been on stage in the past I have felt no connection whatsoever with the audience. If I felt anything at all it would best be described as indifference or even contempt.

I'm also very much a loner & just don't like the whole "band camaraderie" thing, it's the same reason I've never had any interest in team sports.

I still very occasionally do an acoustic gig with an old friend of mine who is a great singer but I do that because I love hearing her sing - I couldn't care less about the audience.

You sound like a barrel of laughs !

  8. We still get gigs but they are definitely not as prolific as they were, so if it was to dry up, I think that would be the reason as I can't see me stopping anytime soon, as long as we get bookings. Obviously health could be a factor which no one can foresee.
Touch wood, I'm gonna keep on keepin on for a long while yet! ;)

  9. I tried my P through my MXR Sans amp and an SVT2 and Barefaced Super twin, turned the treble up on the bass, used a pick and I got the JJ tone spot on . It's just a subtle nice distortion you get from the pedal , not too harsh.

I tried same settings with a Les Paul bass and it sounded different. Good, but not JJ good. Same with Spector .

So it seems quite easy to achieve if you have the right distortion, treble pushed and an aggressive technique.

  10. I have now given the Beck album a fair few listens and can now say, is not really good, it's bloody brilliant! I would like to say thanks once again to Kanye for giving me the interest in downloading it ! :)
