  1. Make sure you go with a glossy option.

    we usually give away CDs after gigs...can I suggest that you download the ExpressIt software (free) to aid better printing. While it's great for printing, design your label in [a program like] Photoshop - it's pretty easy to make a square template with a layers showing non-printable areas then build your designs, then save the file as a hi-res jpeg and then pull it in ExpressIt. Works a treat.

    This is very true. I was in love with the [i]shape[/i] of the Streamer more than anything else, when I bought one years ago I used it until the style of music I was playing changed and I got a Precision. I'm kind of tiring of that after about ten years - don't get me wrong, it's a lovely bass, but I need a change - so I'm likely to be going with a Lakland DJ5 as soon as the money kicks in.

    My old Warwick had three different necks on it until they changed it for bubinga one. This was a first series Streamer bolt-on (I think it was called an LX model even back then) - and the necks (maple/evangol? laminates) weren't that stable. After they fixed the neck, it was a wonderful, versatile and phat bass.

  3. I've always maintained that original material is my primary goal...I never ever wanted to play anyone elses songs.

    Recently we gigged in Reading and (as it was a paying gig) we were asked to throw in some covers. We did a couple each of Blink182 and Feeder and some more obscure stuff...IMO it was these songs that let down our set...the original material went down much better and we played our stuff with more passion. I felt a bit[i] used[/i] considering my originals only stance.

    I guess if it's your only source of income (or even a potential source of income) then maybe you need to consider what's more important...your integrity or playing Chris de Burgh covers. Personally, as music doesn't pay my bills, it's integrity as far as I'm concerned. I hope never to play [i]Every Rose Has A Thorn [/i]ever again.

  4. Schooldays...late 70s. Three piece. We had a different name every week. Uncle Herbert...Individual Cheese Portions...The Dags...Funcrime. We sounded like a 78rpm version of Rush meets the Police.

    The guitarist went on to play with Go West, Tom Jones, The Art Of Noise, then write for Hear Say, Ronan Keating, and a bunch of other people. I fell into an office job.

  5. Years ago I had a brief conversation with Mark Plunkett, who used to play for the late Little Angels. They played at a club owned by a mate of mine before they were doing a Wembley show supporting Van Halen.

    I asked why, when he had a rack of Spectors et al, he favoured an old Precision. He just said, 'a million people can't be wrong, can they?'. I don't know if his numbers were that accurate (but his estimate must be on low side), but if it was a rubbish bass, Fender would have stopped making it years ago.

    I do love mine (even if the E is very boomy), but it's nearly time to retire it. Soon. Soon.

I read some of the Russ Ryan stuff on TB a few months back and while it was an interesting read (and I would say I haven't re-read the thread this time around...I'm at work), but from memory he did seem blissfully ignorant about the different versions of the Geddy Lee signature model, kept saying 'I'll have to ask Geddy about that' and he did come across as a bit of a slack-jawed yokel insofar as his knowledge of other bass gear went.

    Am I right?

    I played in Reading a couple of weeks ago in a real metal pub. Our drummer is a fantastically loud player. The guy doing the sound said to us we needed to ramp the sound up, so we did.

    During the set, we were getting a bit of feedback off the stage microphones and one of the venue staff tweaked the mixer (which was at the side of the stage) - he shouted over to me that we were the loudest band he'd ever had in there, which I took some pride in considering the venue.

    Loud = good IMO.

    Nope you're spot on. Bruce Foxton is also one of their endorsees. Steve Jones (Sex Pistols too). The target design was originally destined for an orange-sparkled coloured TP12, somehow it got changed to blue. The orange looked much nicer.

    I'm guilty of being a CT fan for years too...I saw them first at the Roundhouse in Chalk Farm, 1977 or 1978.

    Always a fan of TP, the 12-strings he used were way off my cash-availability - the Hamers, Kids, Chandlers. I chanced upon a copy of US Bass Player containing an article on Tom Petersson, read about the Waterstone and contacted them - this was around two years ago. CEO Bob Singer and I exchanged a few e-mails, spoke several times and I tried my darnedest to set up a UK distribution channel for them (which indirectly is kind of how I ended up with this baby).

    Bob is a really nice guy (check out his bio too - he's actually a brain surgeon by day) - he's a huge fan of UK 70s punk, The Jam, the mod scene and a big vintage guitar collector. He's very receptive to ideas and guitar mods and will answer any e-mail he gets.

    The long and the short of it was not one store was interested in taking the bass (or any of the range), primarily because there was no profit in it for them because, as you say, they don't cost the earth and you can buy direct. Shame.

    I think you hit the nail on the head there. If you read the [i]Everybody Wants Some[/i] biography of Van Halen it's pretty clear that while he was [i]in[/i] with the Van Halen boys, he was never really in - always an outsider. Concerning the in-band battles against DLR it was more like (2+1) against 1, rather than 3 against 1. I always wondered how he actually lasted so long with the band...he always seemed the weak link.

    That said, from the footage I've seen from the comeback tour, Wolfie seems to be able to fill Michael Anthony's shoes pretty easily.

  12. My Waterstone TP12 bass.

    I've had this for about a year and a half now and to be honest while I really don't use it that much I think it's a pretty special and beautiful bass. A new pearloid pickguard arrived today from Pickguardian and it looks real purty, so I took some snaps.

    34" scale, currently wearing a set of D'Addarios. I put some Dunlop Straploks on almost immediately, but that's it. All stock. Thinking about putting in an East pre-amp later in the year.

  13. No one has really answered here...sometimes it's simply not about taking a neck off and putting a new one on.

    That said, try Dick Knight. Long established luthier, now in their 2nd/3rd generation. I had my Travis Bean refretted by them a loooooong time ago and my guitarist at the time had the neck on his Les Paul shaved and some electrics work done. They build some lovely archtops.

    By way of coincidence, I sent them an e-mail this morning for a quote for blocks on my Waterstone.

    For me, limited compression evens out my bass so everything sounds [i]level[/i]. Excess compression c/w a bit of drive/gain gives me what Line 6 would describe as pawnshop punk/JJ Burnel kind of distorto.

    To be honest, for some time I've been wondering what compression does as well...

  15. Doesn't do anything for me, sorry. When I visit a guitar website, I want to see saucy pictures of the guitars reclining on silk sheets (well, you know what I mean), not planks of wood ('The Process') in a Flash presentation that is too big for my display (my screen resolution is 1024x768)...I can see wood going through surface planers on the Discovery Channel any hour of the day.

    Having a quick look at the Bongo pages, I'm still a little staggered that a company of this size doesn't actually have some well photographed images of the actual model in all the available colours, with the actual hardware/scratchplate options, rather than some quick and nasty rollovers that display other models. If it's an available option, then they must have a demo model that can be photographed to serve the purpose. At the very least, do a job of it in Photoshop.

    While writing this epistle, I remembered looking at the site Nissan set up for the Qashqai car...this was some time ago (they've changed it since, but this is still way better). That's how options should be shown. [url="http://tinyurl.com/4ly3pq"]Nissan Site[/url]

  16. I just took the pickguard off my Waterstone bass (don't ask why) and it broke.

    Anyone here adept at making me a replacement on a rapid turnround? I'd prefer a tortoiseshell finish, but I would also consider a pearly one. No screw holes. I have the bits for the template!
