3. I didn't spot Sara Lee in any of the comments, ex Gang Of Four after Dave Allen left.
 4.
Barry Adamson from Magazine who alas is probably overshadowed by the Best Lyricist and best Guitarist of that era.
Personally I don't think anyone was overshadowed in Magazine. To me they're the epitome of a band of equals. McGeoch was fantastic though, such a loss!
 5.
Paul Webb (Talk Talk)
Yip - he was good, "It's My Life" has a great little bass line in it.
Barry Adamson (Visage)
He's been mentioned for what he did in Magazine. FWIW - in case anyone's not aware, he also did loads of stuff with Nick Cave and some soundtrack stuff.
Matin Kemp (Spandau Ballet / DFS furniture)
Average isn't quite the word I would have though...
Michael Dempsey (The Cure/Associates)
Definitely worth a listen to, especially on Sulk.

 7.
Chris Wolstenhome. Legend
I think he's come out with some of the most interesting lines this side of John Taylor, certainly in a rock band. I don't know if I'd say he's underrated though.

 9.
Barry Adamson (Magazine)
Good call - i certainly don't underrate him though Makes me think of Russell Webb as well though (formerly of The Armoury Show - connection to Magazine through John McGeoch and John Doyle)
 10.
Or if you wanted to be really controversial what about a home-grown vs Asian-licensed shoot out. How much more do you get for your money when you buy a US Lakland as opposed to a Skyline? Sadowsky NYC vs Metro, how does the Fretking Blue Label Esprit 4 compare with the Green Label Europa IV? Go on I dare you...
First of all, I haven't read BGM for about 5 issues now, but the things I liked most when I did read it were the comparison reviews; i.e. get a load of similar gear and compare them. That's probably the most useful thing (I would have thought) for us. There are very few shops where you can just go in and find numerous decent amps in the same price/power range because most shops can't afford to stock 'redundant' gear. Also, as you mentioned, reviews of more rare but not necessarily high end equipment would be good. When I was looking for a decent 5 string bass it was practically impossible to find the sort of thing I wanted unless it was a Fender or Ibanez, so get a few mid-range basses together and compare them.
Just a comment about the mag - could we see an upright bass section soon.. or a shootout of electric upright basses?
Isn't the clue in the title - Bas GUITAR Magazine :-) FWIW - If there's an upright section added on a regular basis I won't be re-subscribing!
 12.
I dont bother with proper bass magazines, I do read www.bass-musician-magazine.com though
Looks like it might be interesting, but surely we don't need to be bombarded with Marcus Miller and Esperanza Spaulding ALL the time!

 14.
What I never understand is how BGM manage to let so many typos and spelling errors creep in to the copy. I know some folks don't give a toss but to me it looks very unprofessional, they wouldn't spell Fender incorrectly, so why spell focused incorrectly?
That was one of my gripes with BGM actually, it didn't look like anyone proof-read it. I emailed them a couple of times about glaring errors in speelig and grammar but they appeared to be ignored. One thing that really, seriously annoys me in print is mistaking "bought" for "brought", e.g. "I brought a new guitar" when it should be "I bought a new guitar". Saying that, it's a very common occurrence these days; it's a pity journalists these days don't appear to need to know anything about English! John
 15.
I think some of the articles / interviews are good in Bass Player but don't like it's "Americaness" compared with the very British attitude of BGM Maybe I just have an anti USA attitude......to most things.....except Jaco and the Fender Jazz, V8 engines, Saturn 5 ...... no must be the mag...
I have to say I agree. I heard good things about Bass Player and, given that it's cheap compared to BGM, I thought I'd give it a go but I have found too much americanness in it (it's understandable really, but...). Actually, one of the other things I don't like about it is that it has a lot of articles on double bass players as well. To be honest, I haven't the slightest interest in double bass. As for BGM - I subscribed to that for a couple of years then got bored with it. There wasn't enough gear reviews in it (or the ones they did were mainly way out of my budget range) and they had loads of articles on bands I'd never heard of (and I suspect lots of people had also never heard of). When my Bass Player subscription expires I won't be renewing it, but I might go back to BGM if it still exists by next February :-) John
 16.
Other - Overwater Progress III Fretless 5 - guess this could also be considered custom as I selected the woods and hardware etc, with a bit of guidance Have any you guys heard of Overwater?
I've heard of Overwater - beautiful looking instruments, and I would LOVE to be able to justify the expense of getting one! The Progress III 5 String, but Fretted would be ideal for me :-) BTW - I answered other - my weapon of choice is currently a Dean Edge Pro 5 String in Tiger Eye finish. John
 17. How much do you want to spend? I've been looking for something recently but for a desktop box. As far as I can tell, you can have either good games/entertainment performance or good audiophile performance but it's not easy to get both, at least not for a reasonable price. A friend of mine has an E-MU systems 1616M PC Card version, but that's mainly for recording. What sound device does your laptop have? Does it have ASIO drivers? If not, have you tried ASIO4ALL on it?
 18. What Cruiser model was it? I had the CSR-55A for a while. Over a period in excess of 25 years I've owned... Satellite Precision Copy This was my first ever bass, bought for me as a christmas present when I was 14 or so from AdLib Music in Greenock (the owner of AdLib was a friend of a friend of my parents). It was a natural, lacquered finish. Within a few days of getting it I managed to bash it against something and broke the winder off one of the tuners. It got replaced with one of the same style but slightly different size so the covers have been off ever since. I also took the bridge cover off (as you do). This was ok as a bass to start with, fairly innocuous sound etc. When I got my next bass though I decided to de-fret this one, paint it and add a switch to swap the pickup wiring around. De-fretting was ok, although a bit messy, but worked. Putting the switch in did interesting things - it made it relatively easy to get a Peter Hook sort of sound, especially the one from Sunrise off Low Life. The paintjob was done with car paint. It looked ok for a few years then looked horrible - yellowy! At the moment the body has been stripped and is hanging in my garage with a few coats of clear nitrocellulose lacquer on it, waiting to be sanded then have a number of coats of transparent red nitrocellulose lacquer put on it. There's always a chance that one day I'll finish it! Aria Pro II Laser Heritage Electric Bass This was my second bass and I still have it. It was the first one I had that cost a half decent amount of money, about £185 in fact, in around 1985. I got this from CC Music when they had a shop in Canal Street in Paisley. It's a black finish with passive electrics. It was a huge toss-up between this and the Westone Thunder 1A; I tried both at the time and thought this was the better of the two and, apart from that, John Taylor played Aria. The neck is lovely and thin, and relatively playable! Nowadays it's used occasionally when I can't be bothered unpacking the 5 string after practices, but as about half of our tracks use the low E, I can't do a lot with it. Cruiser by Crafter CSR-55A This was my introduction to 5 strings. I bought it from a retailer on ebay in 2005 for about £160. At the time it was the cheapest 5 string I could find that I liked the look of. There was a Stagg one, but I played that and found the strings were far too close together - it was weird! This was finished in a very nice metallic red. I quite liked this despite it being a cheap instrument. I found the B to be a bit floppy though as it was a 34" scale. This is one I couldn't really justify keeping when I decided to get a more expensive 5 string, as the spec (2 soapbar pickups, 5 strings, active etc) were the same, so I sold it on ebay for very little. Unfortunately at the time some numpty was selling new ones for signifanctly less than £100! Dean Edge Pro 5 String I got this from Neals Music in California in September last year. It was practically impossible to get in the UK at the time so it was worth getting it shipped in. It's in a Tiger Eye finish and it is very beautiful. Compared to pretty much all the other basses I've played, it plays like a dream (although I'm sure if I paid 3 times the price I could find something nicer). My only criticisms are that the volume controls seem like a bit of an all-or-nothing job, they're not very progressive in their response, and the finger bridge pieces aren't brilliantl; they stick out a bit because they go past the body contours, and the intonation and height adjustment is a bit odd. Apart from that, it plays and sounds brilliant to me, the 35" scale certainly helps to make sure the B string is nice and taut. So there you are. [Update 14th July 2020] Warwick Rockbass Streamer Fretless 5-String Decided I needed a 5-String fretless too, so bought one from Thomann in around 2011. That was an epic story though; I got one from ebay first, which was useless and unplayable, then 3 x Harley Bentons from Thomann, all were poorly finished and had flaws in their necks so got sent back. Finally decided I might as well pay a bit extra and got the Rockbass. It's nice, although is a bit of a neck-diver, and very quiet (vintage pick-ups apparently).
how about this, http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product~name~A...115~ID~1450.asp very good for the money and will certainly be more reliable than the behringer, you could go for the 2x10 for a few dollars more.
Wow - that is rather inexpensive - and I quite like SoundsLive! I'll have to think about that one. Obviously I've heard of Ashdown's unreliability but as someone else mentioned, it's always been about amps, not speakers. Apart from that, I like the look of the 2x10 as well. Thanks
 21.
If you're near Coventry I would've thought this was quite a good buy: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=21590
Thanks for that suggestion but I'm not very close to Coventry. I don't have a lot of experience of 4x10 cabs either, but the ones I do have experience I didn't much like the sound of, so I'd be a bit hesitant on that anyway. For the moment I think it's best to stick with a 1x15. Thanks again though.

I guess i could put a wanted ad on!
 24.
I bought brand new, when they first came out in 2004, a Behringer BA1x15 and a BA2x10. They had aluminium style cones. They did not last long, literally. Within a year, the cones disintegrated, rather like a window that has had a stone through it, leaving a hole. Maybe they've got better, but I won't go near their cabs again. Second Hand cabs are definitely the thing. If you don't mind weight, then you should pick up a bargain on Basschat, as many of us on the wrong side of 40 are going premium/light and shedding the back-breaking beasts accordingly.
I'm 41 :-)
