1. When thinking about this topic, all I can think of is Marcus Miller who said that he owned upwards to 50 basses but still only played the same over and over again, because it had pretty much become his signature bass/sound and that was all he needed. That goes pretty much in line with what I'm waiting for now: A Sandberg Jazz that I figure will be my main bass for the foreseeable future. It has all that I need in overall sound and playability and fits all styles. Doesn't cost a fortune, but does it need to? I do have several other basses which are more suited for other styles specifically, but that's only because I'm a bass whore If anything, I'd probably only keep my Stingray which is the only 4-string I own, because I sometimes love playing in drop tuning.
2. The overall quality of the bass, the string gauge but also a good setup. I've played 34" basses that had a better B than other 35, simply because the overall quality of the bass was better. That's not to say that 35" doesn't have an effect; IMHO it still does, but the quality of the construction of the bass is more important. Which is why I hate cheap Ibanez 5'ers with a passion. Way too sloppy B strings.
3.
Warwick GAS is not a bad thing, they are wonderful instruments with a unique tone... I beleive there are some reasonably priced examples in the BC marketplace right now
And I've checked out most of them! But unfortunately, most of them are not the simple Thumb or Streamer Stage-1 5-strings that I'm after, but instead other types. Otherwise I would seriously consider one of them.
4. Sold a bunch of various basses recently and still have one for sale, a Tobias. Still have a Tobias that's been with me for quite some time. Recently acquired a Stingray and have an order for a Sandberg arriving sometime soon hopefully. Other than that, the only thing I have GAS for is Warwick. After that, I could consider myself pretty happy with what I have. All 5-strings except for the Stingray for those times when you only need 4.
5. I've had GAS for a Warwick for a long time... Thumb or Streamer. Don't really have any use for it, just that after listening to various players (Ryan Martinie, Jon Stockman, Dirk Lance, Dick Lövgren, Damon McKinnon) using either of those and getting just fantastic tones, has got me interested. However, because I don't have immediate use for it, I've been trying to find a used one in my vicinity that doesn't have an outrageous price, as I don't wanna buy a new one. So far, no cigar. Also have a slight GAS for a Fender Jazz V now that I've ordered a Sandberg, but again... no immediate use for one, and I would probably only use it for backup if I ever got one.
6.
I can record you a small clip... If you like... These are one of the nicest mtd's ive heard all of them feature ash bodies and maple/rosewood necks... http://m.youtube.com...p&v=ixWpYDDU-wc http://m.youtube.com...p&v=1JlVU_y9sso http://m.youtube.com...p&v=WYv_WnSYWAQ
Oh, I don't doubt the awesomeness that is MTD in terms of sound. However playability is big thing for me, for example there are a lot of "classic" basses out there that people love and I hate so I need to play one to be really sure if it's something I'd buy in the future.
7.
By the way Arnoldo has a really stunning 635 up for sale, if your after a 6er.
Yes I saw it and it truly looks amazing. It would be a great choice for a first MTD with all good "basic" woods that suit any style. However, I'm still on the fence regarding MTD's since I haven't tried one and going to the UK just for trying one out doesn't really seem practical. I am however considering visiting Musikmesse in Frankfurt next year and hopefully try something out there if MTD happen to be there.
8. I'd love to see if people here have any pre-Gibson Tobias' (or more correctly pre-Nashville). I'll start with my two with some of Mike's words about them (from left to right): #1033: "Classic 5 birdseye maple and purple heart neck morado and alder body built in 89" #1776: "Signature 5 bubinga wenge neck zebra wenge body built in 91" The 1033 has been with me for 6-7 years and has been my main bass. The owner before he who sold it to me was a touring musician who handled it pretty roughly so it has quite some marks on it, but it still plays beautifully. The preamp however is starting to give up on me so I'm trying to find a technician who could hopefully solve any problem. The 1776 was bought recently and looks and plays great. It's in better condition but still has a lot of wear and tear which is natural (it is 20+ years old after all!). Needs to be taken to a technician also since the switch is pretty wonky. I am however starting to have second thoughts about these, wanting to pick up 6-string for the first time in years (haven't played one in 10 years), but they'll most likely be with me for quite some time until I can get my hands on either a pre-Gib 6-string or maybe something else like an MTD. Still have no idea how the latter plays because I've never tried one, but it is Mike Tobias' work so I bet it plays just as fine as these two.
9. Wow, amazing price for an MTD. If I wasn't currently financing a new kitchen in my apartment I'd jump on this. Maybe later...
10. Hey there Heard about this site recently and thought I'd register since I'm always on the lookout at different bass forums marketplaces for interesting ads. I'm a sucker for pre-Gibson Tobias' so that's what I'm mainly looking for (I own one, and am about to purchase another one). When I'm not working full-time as a web developer I also play music with a band called Soen (I'm the touring bass player) which I'm having a ton of fun with. Started out playing a lot of simply rock tunes but now I mostly enjoy playing progressive music of all kinds, but also funk and heavier stuff (and I've been bitten by the fusion bug...) Well anyways, cool to be hear and see you around! /Chris
