The only replacement pick ups I've found that would fit an SR300 are the Bartolini MK4 soapbars. The ones they use in the SR500. They're about £200 for the pair.
From a quick google the SR500 use's MK1 pups. I'd guess they're a budget eastern made version of the MK4s to keep costs down.
Don't quote me on it though!

    3. While there are plenty of bands putting their music out on cassette, don't expect any of them to have a 100% analogue path from instruments to final final cassette.
I've often thought that with vinyl. People ramble on about analogue sounding better etc etc but it's probably gone through a computer at some point anyway so it seems a bit of a con to call it analogue.... I also don't like getting up half way through an album to turn it over!

The cassette thing comes across as a hipster trend, just doing it to be different... which is fine if that's what flicks your switch. I guess.

I seemed to remember the Australian girl from Neigbours passed off "Torn" or a similar song as an original , then Chris Evans found european version which sounded exactly the same and predated it, so Im sure its not done and got away with 100s of times in the charts.
I'm not so sure that'd be classed as trying to pass it off as an original, it was still credited to the original writers so was all above board... unlike Led Zep with dazed & confused when that was released!

Alternatively you could have a "spare" body made just as you like it and keep the original untouched. Then if you ever sold the bass you could put the neck back on the original body. This wouldn't be cheap either but it keeps the original intact with original finish.
Or maybe just wait it out and find a contoured body SH and then mod that to accomdate the classic hardware?

If you're commited to modding though, I'd be tempted to drive up to Shuker Basses (45 mins from Manc says the website) and let them do it - very highly regarded round these parts! :)

  5. Is it even a bass though? It doesn't have any actual "proper" bass notes unless paired with an octave pedal
Good for those only practicing chords/solo stuff beyond the 12th fret, not a fat lot of use for anything else I would of thought.

A 5 string cut off at the 5th fret makes a lot more sense though, shorter with a full standard bass range. Win-win for a travel bass!

  6. I always take youtube tutorials with a pinch of salt, at the end of the day it's going to be their interpretation of the song and it may or may not be "correct".

For me the recorded version sounds a bit more 'laxed but the live 1 with the changes sounds a bit more pushed along (it is quicker anyway but IMO following the chords amplifies this a little bit).

So I'd ask the band how they want it to sound or maybe mix the 2, worlds your oyster really!

  7. It probably stayed as a prototype for a reason.

If Jason spent the day with it with the owner, guessing that means one of two things:

    1) A CS limited run of '59 Protos
    2) The owner wants a replica to gig.

    Very cool though!

Could of just gone in for a service? Someone who owns a bass like this and probably doesn't play it much (looking at the condition) probably wants it to have a full Fender "service history". That's my guess anyway :P

Wonder what it sounds like though, those fat pups look interesting!

EDIT: // It´s a Video Review... I´m too stupid to insert a Video in here... so just the link

Remove the "s" from "https://" and it will show up as a video! :)

  9. My brother's disabled but likes strum on a guitar, not making any kind of music or anything just "playing".. it puts a smile in on his face.
This device could probably help him play something a little more in tune as he doesn't really have the dexterity in his hands.

So ridiculous to some maybe but it could be useful to others I reckon!

I really like Jordan's work with the John Mayer trio - and having Pino in the mix is not too bad either! :D

    Here's a short film about them: https://www.youtube....h?v=2yjBwxa5fEE

Cheers for posting, hadn't seen that! I'm excited that John Mayer Trio 2 is in the works, would love to see that line up live!

I can't go through the whole list.

I'm not really sure why Ahmir from Quest Love or Steve Jordan is even on the list.Nice to see Greg Errico (Original drummer for Sly & The Family Stone) made it.

If Buddy Rich is not in the top 5, The list is not credible as far as I'm concerned.

Both Questlove and Steve Jordan fully deserve to be on the list, they're exceptional drummers.

I was a bit embarrassed at how many drummers I had never heard of, given that drummers are rather important to us bass players!
+1 to that but I bet our drummers couldn't name any bass players either!

I had a play on a couple of Fender Ps and didn't like the necks at all - way to wide. The Sandberg is 40mm @ nut so sits between the standard Jazz and P widths. The neck profile is a little flatter feeling than my US Geddy Jazz.
Oooh, I've never actually tried a standard P width then - My P must have a narrower nut as it measures about 40/41mm. it's a B neck.

For example... Nobody listens to Louis Johnson ..who was probably THE 80's bass player with his work with Quincy Jones
for slap as the style has moved on so much.
....I still listen to Louis Johnson, does that make me a bad person? :(

but the question is, why wasn't anyone else doing it then? In the age of shred, and guitar heroes popping up each week, why were no other bass players playing like Billy?
Because the guitar players got the fame, money and girls... so why would anyone put any effort into playing the bass like Billy?

Well that's what happens when younger bass chatters put down Jaco.

I'm 25 and I can't say I've ever seen anyone put down Jaco, stop blaming the youth you old fogey! :P

Maybe the shredder phase has passed but Billys playing with Winery Dogs is immense, nothing cheesy or 80's about it.
Like LewisK said, he serves the songs incredibly well whilst still having his flash moments.
