These are indeed absolutely amazing basses. One of the very Jazz-style basses that money can buy. I've never played an active one ( I'm sure it's great) , but the passive version is a thing of wonder. All USA- made Laklands are superb quality instruments, that's why so many pros use them . GLWTS.
Yes indeed. I have had the luck of owning 4 US Laklands and they all were outstanding instruments. The thing I like about Laklands is that a lot of people have never heard of them, and we don't see them very often on stage. But then you are watching studio footage of big artists and what are they playing? Not the Fenders they use at concerts or in photo shoots, but their trusty Laklands! Look at Foo Fighters bass player here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8grjRDo3j8s Or legendary Fender player Pino Palladino here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61N3vQC-8Tk IMHO they are simply better. In 20 years time we will be able to play vintage Laklands and then a lot of us will be very happy. -
For sale my beloved US Lakland Joe Osborn. Serial number 206, according to lakland.com, made in 2001. This is a rare bird: birdseye maple fingerboard, slightly metallic Sherwood green finish, active Bartolini PUs and electronics (with midrange switch) and no pickguard. It comes with E string detuner. None of the features of this bass are aftermarket or modifications: this bass was custom-ordered like this. The bass has been played but it is in very good condition as you can see. This is the best neck I have ever played, period. The sound of this bass is great. I have played NYC Sadowskys and 60s Fenders, and in my opinion this is just better. Smooth and thin. I just happen to prefer passive basses and this one never gets played. Weight is 4,3 Kg (9,4 pounds). Comes with original warranty card (obviously not valid anymore). cream tolex OHSC, case key and hex keys. I will also include an original tortoiseshell PG that I bought. I never installed because I changed my mind about drilling holes for the screws, so it is not used. A whole gallery of HUGE HD photo HERE. Zoom in! Price is 1700 plus shipping. Possible trades are vintage Fenders (before 1970) or ideally a passive US Lakland JO or Bob Glaub from similar era. Money will be added to either side if necessary. Thanks! I bought an AMAZING Fullerton RI JBass from Brian. Communication was direct and pleasant, fast postage and bass very thoroughly packed. A fine gentleman, a pleasure to deal with! J.
might need another visit to Malaga
You are ALL welcome to come and play!!
Wow. Stunning condition, too. And that, my friends, is what a proper tort guard looks like.
Yes, those old tortoise shell PG are the real deal. And apart from the fact that it is a (VERY VERY good) refin, the overall condition is great. An the sound, my lord... -
PRICE IS 4500!! Old conversion error again. Why don't we just all use british pounds?? HUGE PRICE DROP: NOW 3600 pounds!!! Crazy PreCBS bargain. First things first: Fender collectors and passionate players alike, here is something you might never see again. For sale a 1962 Fender VI. Some say "6-string bass", others say "baritone guitar". Whatever you call it this is a beast of an instrument. You have all seen many of these, specially the modern reissues, Pawn shop models and Custom Shop. But this is not THAT. When introduced in 1961, the Fender VI had 3 pickup switches, one for each single-coil pickup, and smooth chrome mounting rings around them. Only one year later, in 62, and following the modifications introduced in the Jaguar guitar, the added a 4th switch and changed the look of the pickups. This is explained here, from Fender.com: "...After the Jaguar guitar appeared in 1962, the Bass VI was modified with some of that guitar’s elements, most notably re-designed pickups with notched chrome rings, and a fourth slider switch that offered a deeper tone (often called the “strangle” switch), and foam rubber string mutes." Think of Fender VI and think of Jack Bruce, Dick Dale, the Shadows, Morricone soundtracks... But also Robert Smith, My Bloody Valantine and 90s Shoegaze. The studio is the natural habitat of these instruments (I got this bass from one), although you can see it on stage in any The Cure concert. Less than 800 Fender VI were built between 61 and 75 (when they stopped production), so imagine how very few of the early ones were made before modifying the design in 62. Well, this is one of those early models, obviously Pre-CBS, slab board and very very rare. Neckplate serial is as low as L00633!! Pots date back to 62, and the pencil mark on the neck heel seems to say 62 also. The tone of this bass is amazing. I wish one of my Jbasses could get the sound the neck PU gets on this one. Original whammy bar included, floating bridge works perfectly. Cream tolex OHSC (no-logo, period correct) also present and in good working order (except for one missing lock). A lot of info on the Fender VI HERE and HERE. And tons of High resolution photos in this GALLERY. Only trades I might consider are PreCBS Precision Basses. ENJOY!!
What does switch 3 do ?
To be completely honest with you, I don't remember!! I used those for a very short period of time a long time ago. I remember fiddling with the switches made nice changes in tone, much like a preamp. They all cut very well through the mix, I remember that much.
