  1. The neck on my VM Precision is noticeably thicker than the Jazz neck on my Deluxe Precision, despite the nut widths being 41mm and 38mm respectively - it doesn't sound like a huge difference on paper but it's really pronounced when I go from one to the other.

A jazz neck would be a much closer match to your SR, but before you take the plunge, two bits of advice from me:

    1. Get to your local shop, pick up a Jazz and give it a play - better to be 100% sure that you're comfortable with the feel - you might decide you like the Precision neck better, and if so you're £100+ better off!

    2. MEASURE UP. Make sure you check the actual measurements of the neck pocket on your bass line up with the specs of the neck you plan to order. I (rather foolishly) bought a Squier neck without the bass I was buying it for in front of me, and unfortunately it didn't fit - luckily I was able to sell it on but save yourself the hassle!

  2. Hello,

So I've just gone to adjust the truss rod on my Fender P, but I don't have an Allen key that fits (bought it 2nd hand and didn't get the original)

I went to use the key that came with my Squier P (fits nice and snug in the Squier) but it was completely loose in my Fender.

Am I being ignorant to think that the Squier key should fit? Is something horribly wrong with my Fender? Can anyone point me in the direction of an Allen key that will fit?

    Thanks,

    Dave

  3. Nice! Intrigued to see how the heads stack up!

Not to hijack the thread completely, but some thoughts from me on the Rumble 40 I tried today (and am picking up tomorrow)

Just had the fortune of playing through the Rumble 40 at Wunjo's on Denmark St. One word - incredible.

First things first it really does weigh nothing. It reminded me of the tiny 15 watt guitar combos my band used to practice with a decade ago, it was unbelievable.

The sound was impressive, the built in voicings (Vintage and Bright) were effective and allowed for tones that ranged from full on dub to slightly driven tube on the Vintage setting, and then a really nice slap tone with the bright switch engaged.

I didn't really play with the EQ because it sounded great flat, and the output seemed fine, although again i didn't push the master past halfway.

All in all, very impressive for the price, great tone, amazing look, and a crazy lightweight box.

EDIT: and after checking in with Ms Yellow I have just bought it :D

novice question, if i put a jazz neck on a p bass will it limit me with type of strings, prefer heavy gauge, will there be any difference in tone or playabilty, is it entirely down to how u prefer your neck fat or thin?

Not at all, you will still be able to use your preferred string gauge, the key thing to note is that would need to re-set (or at least check) your set-up once the new neck is fitted.

In terms of impact on tone - not a lot in my experience unless you were changing from a Rosewood board to a Maple board (Maple is a little brighter than Rosewood)

Just make sure you measure your neck pocket before you buy anything.

  6. Another couple of options in the Fender Modern Player series - not 'typical' Precisions, but the Tele bass (50's style precison body, 2 giant covered humbuckers) and the Jaguar bass (P/J pickups) have maple boards and are worth a look.

Hmm, I dabbled with a Jazz for a while but was relieved to get back to my P neck, which is a bit of a baseball bat. I think it's about whatever you get used to, really... I like a lot of wood in my hand. Fnarr - and I say again, Fnarr.

I'm a bit schizophrenic when it comes to necks.

I have 2 basses with Jazz necks and then a baseball bat Precision. Some days I like the extra room of the P, other days I prefer the way I can motor around the fretboard on a Jazz neck.
