  1. Bought this neck for a project which I lost interest in. Got as far as changing the tuners (Dixon brand I think) and putting a peace bass vinyl sticker on it. Also has a chrome coated brass nut. The wee screws for the tuners have disappeared but quite easy to get. The width at nut is around 42mm and at the heel is around 65mm. It has a tapered bottom which I was going to cut off, assuming that it's 63mm ish around the last fret. No idea of material but I'd guess that it's maple. Rosewood fingerboard. One of the photos shows the join below the headstock. Any questions, just shout.

    £40 delivered.

  2. I used to get peed off with my lack of progress when I got back into bass playing after a long lay off. Joined a function band who had been playing for a good while. With kids and a renovation project, I didn't have a mental amount of time and some songs that I had to learn took ages, grapevine was particularly traumatic but is now my favourite :)
I too would hurl expletives at my left hand and declare myself incompetent. But the enjoyment of playing kept me at it and now can learn a song pretty quick, fiddly bits seem to come together quicker. Point of story (yawn) keep at it. Once you crack a song or a part, the sense of achievement is fantastic. The more you can play the more you can learn to play. It's a journey that will never end, nor would I personally want it too :)

  3. Up for sale is my 14 month old Ibanez SRX430-WH. It's almost flawless as it was only used for a 6 months or so until I got my sb-2. Kinda went off actives and now just sits on the wall looking pretty. It's very comfortable to play and you can dial in a wide variety of tones just like any other SR. She's got a mahogany body and a maple neck with a rosewood fretboard. Always had Daddario chrome flats on her so no fretwear at all. Kinda sad to see it go but I have a semi-hollow itch to scratch. Open to trades but must be semi-hollow. The only flaws I can see is the paint on the black screws holding the control plate on has rubbed off a bit and a few really light scratches on the pick guard. Pick up from Aberdeen area but will post if required, just get in touch with your requirements and I'll sort a quote. Will be sent in a padded gigbag, boxed with a shitload of bubble wrap. Could split if required. Any questions, just ask :)

  4. Saddles generally end up diagonal but it's dependant on your intonation. Check how close you are at the 12th fret and if your sharp, tighten the saddle to bring it down, lengthening the string, if your flat, do the opposite. Only adjust the truss if you know your sh*t but if you're going to, a quarter turn is rarely not enough. Tighten to straighten neck, slacken to increase the bow. Tightening should lower action together with dropping saddle height. Be careful though. A little makes a big difference.

I got this on a market stall in York a couple of years ago. Painted by a local artist, this is a wooden plaque about a foot high but she also did posters and other sizes. Took commissions too if she didn't have who you were looking for. Unfortunately the label with her details on has fallen off the back, but a BCer in York may know who I'm banging on about............sorry about dodgy mobile phone pic

That is several shades of awesome right there! I'm going to have do some diggin!

Yeah, I think I'm going to get "the" Jamerson image put on one, just a case of getting it on the right file.

It's taking shape boys, it's taking shape!

  6. Oh yes, thanks Mark. Just the kind of thing I was after. Nice one :)

I'm intrigued by collection pieces too but big baby Stubass is a liability (felt tip pen on the wife's favourite Jackson Pollock print!) so might leave it a bit yet!

  7. My wee dream of having a dedicated bass room is nearing reality. Just got to put the finishing touches to little baby Stubass's upstairs bedroom and the study room is mine! PC sorted, mixing console sorted, wall mounted bass hangers sorted, comfy beer sofa sorted, beer fridge sorted, just need myself some uber cool artwork to hang on the walls around my axes. Does anyone know where I might find canvases of legends? Particularly James Jamerson? Seem to be hard to find, or maybe the beers went to my eyes!

I'd love to oblige, but as I said earlier in the thread I'm raising funds for a replacement car, so I can't do any trades at this time, sorry.

How local is local? Just being nosy :)

Nae probs min! I stay in Mintlaw and work in Dyce. Information which may prove useful in the future due to my ever changing opinion of my and other peoples gear lol!

  9. Our band has great chemistry and it enhances the experience massively. We played away from home last Friday and Saturday and it was a fantastic weekend start to finish. Private jokes, pranks and lots of cider (we went down a storm too which helped). Wish every weekend was like that but alas, it's kiddies and diy this week :(

  10. Thanks Gary :)

I would have been apprehensive re the tone knob as well but had the pleasure of borrowing one for a while first. I don't miss it at all. For me, the tone is so good anyway I wouldn't want to change it! It didn't even cross my mind til after I'd laid it down.

  11. Just thought I'd throw up a review as I'm falling deeper in love with this bad girl every time I play her. I've also played a USA at a gig so can compare the two reasonably well.

Build quality- No issues here, everything looks top class, one or two of the pick guard screws aren't perfectly true but it's barely noticeable. Neck joint is tight as it could be, no rags on the frets and all screws tight.

Finish- I went for the black metallic sparkle and it's utterly flawless, holding it under the light from all angles reveals a really stunning job. The USA was transparent red and was to die for, certainly the tributes hold up this tradition. The neck is smooth but could be smoother, still excellent for a supposedly sub model.

Sound- This thing is essentially a p bass with a bridge pick up and does have the "growl" if you back the bridge pick up right off, it becomes a bit sharper with both volumes up but not an awful lot. The bridge pup in itself is a bit weak but is essentially there to give it some flexibility in the absence of a tone pot. It naturally seems to have fantastic tone and I personally don't miss a tone knob. In this respect, it's the same as the USA as they use the same pick ups. I love the sound of it more than anything I've played. Monstrous! I want to say that it sounds so alive if that makes any sense!

Playability- it balances really well, no neck dive or anything. It's not really heavy, just reassuringly so. It's jazz width neck is fast and easy to play and access to the upper frets are a joy.

Hardware- It uses the same style bridge as the USA ones, with the saddle lock system although they are made in the far east. I think the tuners are different but still of good quality, certainly don't feel the need to change them out. Pick ups have adjustable pole pieces to adjust output from each string individually which is fantastic, took a bit of tweaking when I got it but it's pretty much level now. Also lets you control how "hot" you like them to be.

Overall- Hard to believe these are sub brand basses. I own a mim precision and this thing destroyed it, and aside from the maple fretboard on the USA sb-2 and the lovely transparent paint job, I could barely see or hear a difference.

    Price paid new £489

Pick ups neck- split p style passive humbucking. Bridge- oversize jazz style also passive humbucking. Both have independent pole pieces mounted on ceramic bar.

    Neck- maple
    Fretboard- rosewood
    Body- swamp ash

Year of manufacture- 2008 made in Indonesia.

    Controls- volume, volume.

  12. Right guys, I want some honest feedback. This is the first mix of our demo (we're a function band wanting to cash in on the lucrative wedding game) we've managed to wing a wedding gig in two weeks due to a friend of a friend being in dire straits. I've rained my playing for this but kinda wish I hadn't but then again, it's about the whole thing, not me wanting to be jaco lol. Anyway, everything recorded with my SB-2 di'd through my lh500 with an ibanez pd7 on runaway baby. Let me know what you think, can we cut it?

  13. "Falcon" precision copy. I didn't think it was that bad til I played a mim, night and day. Think it had several paint jobs and is now in pieces in my loft. I will put it together one day for sentimental and ornamental reasons, good memories. Next worst was an epiphone thunderbird, not cos their that bad, just felt like a wrestling match every time I played it.

    Excellent! Thanks.

Right, the dims are 93mm by 38mm and the pocket is roughly 18mm deep not including the scratch guard. The side with 2 screws has 30mm centres, 4mm in from the edge and the one hole at the other side is central and also 4mm from the edge. The corner rads look to be 5mm. Hope this helps :)

Yes, please! That would be great.

I don't really subscribe to the "good for metal" notion, which is why I put it in quotes. I've already got a Korean SR400 with P/J pups and I fancy another but a bit different :).

No problem, I'll throw up dimensions after work.

  16. I have an srx430 and wouldn't necessarily say it's restricted to metal. I've used it for anything from Motown to funk and it's always sounded fine. It's very adjustable sound wise. Very comfortable to play as its light and got a thin neck. I think the pups are musicman sized although they may not be exact, I could measure them later for you if you like?

  17. Love my sb-2 tribute. Craps on my mim precision. The independent pole pieces on the pickups are a fantastic idea and so is the saddle lock system. Big oversized thumb up!

  18. Omg, just been enlightened to the arthritic delights of shake a tail feather. Been requested for a wedding we're doing in just over a month. I'll need all my time for it me thinks. Still undecided if I start the first bar on the a string or up at the 10th on e. It's like deciding on which nipple you want twisted.
