I've got a '95 SB2 which I love (3-bolt neck joint with the micro-tilt) It's just got the tone in my head - clear, punchy, mid-range focused that can sound enormous with the volumes up high, but still undeniably a P-bass.

I also like the undersized body which reduced the weight and the neck profile, which is somewhere between a P and a J, though closer to a J - if I had enough money I'd order one with a slightly wider neck, but I don't and it's not that far away as it is.

Value wise, I paid £700.00 last September for it, though it was a commission sale at a popular bass shop so you may get a better price in a private sale, but this was the only used one I could find.

The neck is kinda between a j and p, always had trouble with p necks, can't get round fast enough but this ones perfect. Yeah, if I am going to get one, it would likely have to be from the states. Looking at £500 ish with taxes etc. My work mate is definitely not selling me his (wiping away a small tear). I do like the headstock I've decided. Different for the sake of it maybe but it's quirky.

  3. Got a loan of a beautiful g&l sb-2 from a work colleague today and used it at rehearsal tonight. OMG! This thing is awesome! He said he's not selling it but a conversation has to be had! I've got an unexpected show and I'm between (decent) basses so he gave me it for a week. The tone, sustain, feel and action are awesome. The neck is soooo playable, feels jazz like but with a p growl. What are these things worth? It's American circa late 90's early 00's with a pj configuration, solid maple neck, not sure about body but the grain through the transparent red finish looks amazing. It's love boys!:-*

  4. Amp wise, I'd big up a hartke lh500(500w@4ohms and 350w@8ohms). I asked for advice on here and got recommended the lh. Got it for £250 new. Fantastic amp, great clean sound and loud as f***. I run an ashdown 210 and 115 off it (both 350w@8ohms) and it's barely pushed past 5 with loud drummer in a bad mood. Done some recording with it too. The cabs were £100 ish each used. Cheap rig but its up there with the best I've ran. Can just take one cab if it's practice or a pub job too, versatile.

  5. I'm selling an epiphone Thunderbird proiv. It's in mint condition. Natural oil finished. Lovely playing neck through bass. Comes with roksak gigbag shaped to the profile. Link to gumtree ad with photos. Courier anywhere in the UK, will be happy to quote if you provide location. Thanks for looking.

Put an ad on gumtree in 2008 saying I wanted to join up with some players who wanted to start a casual covers band to get me back into playing after 4yr break. Got one reply from a guy who sang but had never been in a band before who wanted to put a covers band together. He had a drummer and guitarist interested. We've been going almost 6 yrs done 300 gigs and are now doing weddings and corporate gigs for decent money. Worked well for me.

Same story with me, not that we're earning decent money yet, in fact the opposite :-/

  7. Right, kinda made my mind up to go for a hartke 410xl. However, I like the idea of a couple of 210's but was put off by the price. I've come across those Harley Benton 210's at little more that £100 each. Anyone had much experience with these? Do you get what you pay for?!?!

  8. Thanks guys. My biggest problem is lack of music shops up here. Those that I mentioned are probably the only cabs in a 50mile radius! We're looking to do functions as there is a huge gap in the market. Down side is lack of equipment to choose from locally. It's an internet job I'm afraid. Would love to try loads of cabs. Even if I travelled to Aberdeen, from what I've heard, choice would be piss poor!

  9. Hi, a few months back I plumped for a hartke lh500 head. Really pleased with it! I've been taking it to practice, playing through an ampeg 810, 215 carlsboro and a little fender 2x8 as well as an ashdown abm810. Apart from the toothless wee fender, it's sounded great through them all. It is now time for me to buy my own cab. I will have pa support so I'm happy to go for a 4ohm 410 (lh is 500w@4ohm) with no intention of extending it. I have a budget of £300 ish. Thing is, all that seem to be in budget are untried cabs. Marshall mbc410 (600w@4ohm) Eden ex410xc (400w@4ohm) and ashdown mag410t (450w@4ohm) in your opinion, what should I go for? Also, why can't I find a hartke 410 rated at 4ohm? Ideally I'd pair with a hartke cab but their all 8ohm. Can't afford 2 smaller cabs :( still a bit new to this. Played through combos for years so I'm a bit clueless as to ohmages etc!

  10. Yeah, I run a crappy DigiTech bp50 and have a boss overdrive too. The bp50 is actually OK apart from it being plastic. Some nice effects in there. Once we've finalised our set I might get some specific pedals but it does for now. I fancy trying vox stomplab sometime though. Heard good things. Tonight went really well again, I am really happy with the head. Had the frickin pa speaker in my face but it was punchy enough to cut through.

  11. Its different I'd say. I did like the ampeg sound but I was on a budget! I'm surprised at the quality for the money though, that's why I compared the two. The ampeg wins with its on board features but as I said, I like a simple set up. The ampeg is definatly less scoopy but the lf500 has that tubey sound I was after. I think I will invest in a sweeper at some point to even things out. Got a 3 hour job tonight so we'll see how that goes, its a notorious room for sound!

  12. Well, tonight I got to put my new hartke head through its paces. Happy! I purchased it from dv247 via some advice from some learned folks on here. I paid £250 for it by requesting a price match from musik productiv. I must say, its probably the best value ive come across. The sound stays sooo clean, even when I attempted to deafen everyone! Its a basic head but im not that into the fiddly stuff so its 3 band eq does fine for me. Its pretty good on the mids, certainly a match for the ampeg pf I used to use, if not slightly better. The bright switch didnt make much difference imo but I'm not fussed. Its a big heavy son of a bitch, solid as hell, can see it lasting the pace no problem. I ran it through an ashdown 810 which is reasonably new and it sounded sweet. Its just a great sounding amp, great tone and you can't really go wrong! The most pleasing thing for me is that I practice with a wee vox pathfinder which I adore and I can get that same kind of tone out the lf500, I kinda struggled to achieve that with the portaflex. Anyway, I'd recommend it if your in the market for a new, great quality amp and your willing to sacrifice some features for the value for money. I was and im bloody delighted. Thanks again to those who advised me on this. :)
