Musicman Stingray - Glasgow Gumtree
absolutpepper replied to absolutpepper's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Hmmm, even more debatable is the fact that he had done a buy it now on an auction for £350 about an hour before it was re-listed (the auction which you won) and I bought it, he had said that as he was new to e-bay that he didn't have a clue what to do as I hadn't paid for it instantly and so re-listed.Probably realised that I may have the steal of the century Have paid by paypal so hopefully this will turn up shortly, and will let you know if it all goes pete tong..is it just a caae of reporting to e-bay and paypal if I have been scammed? Cheers Dave
His band are playing in Glasgow in June, who knows, maybe if you dont get your money back we could pay him a visit -
Musicman Stingray - Glasgow Gumtree
absolutpepper replied to absolutpepper's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Yeah he's totally scamming at it. If he's screwed you and you need his email address drop me a line, I have it from the Gumtree people! I never knew about the BIN, thats also disturbing. Luckily I held off paying till he contacted me. He also used a fake name (Mark) for the auction, this isnt his name. What a joke. -
Hey all Here's a story... I recently won this auction http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...e=STRK:MEWNX:IT A really nice MM 'Ray for a great price, i'm sure you'll all agree. However when I went to pay the seller told me that they'd listed it by mistake and that he'd sold the bass the previous night - Aye Right! I had noticed previously that the bass had been for sale on Glasgow Gumtree and he wanted £800 so I guess he felt that the selling price was too low and now he's lying to avoid selling it. I had a friend contact him to find out more info and he got back saying it was still for sale (yes, its entrapment I know but I cant say I feel too bad) so that at least proved the lying theory - he also used a fake name and a new account in all of the ebay auction stuff. Its a shame because I even offered to make it up to £500 (which I didnt need to do) and tried to explain that I won the auction fairly and that it was not my fault that he did not set a reserve on the bass. TBH I thought that something like this might happen so I had the plan in place in my head from the get go I would urge anyone who sees it on Ebay or Gumtree to report the item as he is clearly just screwing people around (and a Basschatter no less). I will keeping a keen eye to say the least. Cheers Chris

Hey Ive decided that I shall, instead of trading, pop my 2009 Dan Armstrong Plexiglass bass up for sale as I am gassin' for a Stingray quite badly at the moment For those who are interested the bass is in mint condition and comes with the official hard case as well as the additional Kent Armstrong pickup which you can swap around at the turn of a button (its a cool design feature). The craftmanship is great and its a joy to play. Price is £620 posted or you can pick up in Glasgow. My camera isnt working at the moment so I have to say the pic isnt mine, but I can confirm the condition of the bass to be mint. Also, on the reissues the pickups are black whereas it looks brown in the photo.
isn't the Zvex mastotron something similar, or at least able to cop similar tones?
Not quite. The Wooly Mammoth is a gated fuzz and it allows for a wider range of fuzz tones and oscillations. The mastotron isn't gated and as such does a more straightforward sound. To my ears the gated sound is very modern and useful for maybe dance or electro type sounds whereas the mastotron is more 'vintage sounding' if you dial off the fuzz a bit. In saying this it should be possible to get all the sounds from a mastotron out of a wooly mammoth but if you are not interested in the extra (crazier) sounds of the mammoth then there seems little point spending all that extra. As an ex-owner of both I can confirm that both are great and come highly recommended.
true, new forum rules say a price must be stated. i have to say though, i'm interested how much this is going to go for, its the first one i've seen being sold second hand. i'm sure there have been some on ebay or something though.
If im right this is the same one thats on Glasgow Gumtree. If so the seller is looking for £549 although as the other have said a price needs to be stated or mods will pull it. Although id recommend the seller look at how much GAK is selling them for as most people would probably pay the small amount more to grab a brand new one.
The things you point out are more than likely switches to allow individual pickup switching (original setup was a 3 way with bridge+middle, all three, neck+bridge). The pickups changed from being made in clear covers to black around the turn of the decade.
Those rivets are def strange, it should be a single selector switch.
-
I highly doubt he'll get even half of the starting price. From the pics it looks a bit scratched up, there's something strange going on with what look like rivvets on the scratch plate near the selector switch, the pickups look unlikely to be original (or at least have been re-covered), also clean your fretboard dude...no one wants 35years of finger grime for 2k . Also no pics of the case or NOS spare pickup, seems like seller is on to a loser as you wouldnt even expect to pay 1k for a mint example.
Is it the one in Glasgow on eBay at the moment (£599 - no bids)? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Stunning-Lakland-Jas...=item3cac0ba064
Yup, Ive contacted the seller about the swap. While I love my Ampeg I do fancy the Lakland and think its a pretty reasonable swapsy.
I have one and its a very underated bass The lipstick pickups are at different positions to a standard jazz as the front pick up is much firther forward than the front jazz and the rear slightly nearer the bridge. Its an active bass 22 fret and a different body shape to the Jo so its like comparing a stingray with a precision. Theres a great range of tones. wider than a jazz becasuse of the pickups and active circuitry, I like mine, had it for 4 or 5 years from new and no intention of selling it. I agree with OBBM you wont improve it by swapping out the pickups, but you will devalue it. If you dont like it as it is you wont like it with jazz pickups Is it a gold one? If it is it will be part of a run of that colour done with Steve barr of the dudepit.
Hey For starters I realised I said Schaff when its Scheff. Duh! Cheers for the input guys. They seem pretty cool, I wouldnt swap out the pickups now as they sound like they are one of the big plus points of the bass. Yeah, its Shoreline Gold.
-
Hey I may have the opportunity for a trade of my Ampeg for a Lakland Jarry Schaff (Skyline I presume) and was wondering if anyone had any ideas about them. They certainly look interesting but the lipstick pickups seem a bit strange (although Id probably swap them out). How do they compare to the JOs and DJs? Cheers Chris
BUMP back to the top...
Ive got a cheeky wee 2009 Dan Armstrong Plexibass in mint condition (with OHSC and extra pickup) which i'm looking to swap for an MM. If you are interested give me a PM and I can photo it. Cheers Chris

Hey I've recently just picked up an Ashdown Little Giant 1000 and i've noticed that the speaker connections at the rear are Speakon type. Im really hoping to use it with an Ampeg 8x10 at rehearsal tonight and was wondering if I would need to have a Speakon - Speakon or Speakon - Jack cable? Anyone got any ideas? Cheers Chris
at 165 quid it did pretty well for a 2nd hand unmodded OLP
Yeah I agree, I sold mine for £150 and it was unmodded and mint.

Someone's car boot sale find
absolutpepper replied to Annoying Twit's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
TBH I think somone got ripped off big time. £185 winning bid jeez. Its a early-mid 90s Epiphone EB-1. I used to have one, not a bad bass but pretty unremarkable (basically an EB-0 with a violin body shape). Both the fretted and fretless models came with a hard case and telescopic end stand and without these features the basses are worth a lot less. Sadly I emailed the seller and gave him this advice and told him it def was not a 70s bass and that he should change the listing - obviously he didn't - hindsight tells me I should've reported him. Without the case and stand these are worth at a max £150, complete probably £200-£250. -
I personally agree with Chris at Overwater that this would not be a dilution of the brand but rather an opportunity to provide a high quality instrument which is 'spiritually' (for want of a better word) related to the luthier built Overwaters we know and love but at a cost effective price. I do, however, think that the prototypes do appear a bit bland and its a big shame that they chose not to stick with the original headstock design. In saying this the Jazz looks nice from the picture and would like to see more finish options/specs, etc. Chris
Grolsch washers! Seriously, they kick ass and they come with a free bottle of beer!
Agree +10000. I swear by the ol' Grolsh washers and use them on all my basses (except my fretless which has Schallers on). Now if I can convince Erdinger to do a swingtop beer with washers then my life will be complete

While I quite like the look of the Jazz I just couldn't imagine buying one (unless they are priced amazingly or play stunningly). Its a shame, I was really interested and now not so much.
-
As a leftfield option - Grab a Fender Jazzmaster and then buy the Warmoth strat conversion neck. Both the Strat and Jazzmaster are 25.5" scale so it'll go straight on without the need for a bridge adjustment. It obviously wont be the same (for a start it'll be 28" rather than 30" scale) but you could still tune E - E and have a supremely cool instrument for the money. I bought a Jazzmaster for this exact project, just not got round to it yet - damn it for playing so well as a normal 6 string.... One thing worth noting is that the Jazzmaster bridge is funamentally flawed in its design so you'll need new saddles and a Whizzo Buzz Stop. CP

Another lightweight cab thread/query
absolutpepper replied to absolutpepper's topic in Amps and Cabs
"shameless plug" Buy my Compact "shameless plug"
Haha if I had the money at the moment I may have taken you up on it but it'll be a little while. Still looking for advice/opinions people. Chris -
Hey guys Ive just purchased a Little Giant 1000 from the marketplace and i'm starting to think about cabs. I wont be buying for a few months (maybe 6) but I was looking for some advice. Obviously much has been made about the 500x500 non-bridgable issue and I reckon that for most of the gigs, etc I will be playing the 500w from a single channel will cover my needs (plus my Ric has such a 'hot' output there should be no issues there!). Initially I wanted a Markbass or Genz head but after much deliberation I dont think that with the amount of gigging I am doing at the moment that I can really justify that (one for the future I expect), anyways I digress. So I guess the question is what cab recommendations can you give me for this. I really would like a single cab that is relatively lightweight and sub £300 but one which can put out enough oompf that I wont be struggling too much for headroom and it doesnt have to be too esoteric. Cheers Chris

Hey I guess this is a bit of testing the water but i'm thinking of trading my Ampeg Plexibass. Even though I love it and it looks as cool as anything ever I have a real hankering for an MM Ray/Sterling or for another Ric. The Ampeg is mint condition and comes with the OHSC and the additional pickup (1 for bright bass and 1 for deep bass). Been gigged once and thats it. In Glasgow so would need to be kind of local to trade. PM if interested. In the interest of clarity the pic isnt mine, but the bass is exactly the same and as said mint condition. Cheers guys.
