1. I'd rather the simplicity of the front panel of the VBA-320.

    Ashdown

I run an RPM1 preamp and ABM cabs. I have tried several other heads/pre's and have always found what I wanted with Ashdown. The valve to me is just what I'm looking for. Maybe you just don't dig the sound or the bassist you saw had a bad EQ'ing night.
agree with phatbass787 on the abm cabs.i want to try the classic cabs but many stores do not stock them, maybe something to do with their price tag?
to be honest there doesn't seem to be much of a problem with this price.... 4.
My ears are burning! I currently use the Ashdown Classic cabs but also owned ABM ones in the past so heres my 2 pence. The classic cabs are not really what their name suggests in the fact that they are actually more modern sounding than the ABM, they seem to have quite a bit more top end attack and definitely a bit more clarity and generally brighter, the speakers are also very powerful and respond very directly to how much power you give them(sounds daft but a lot of cabs get to a point and then volume doesnt change) and keep on going without compressing. The ABM to my ear are great for that vintage sound, boomy but controlled bottom and fat mids but im my experience are great workhorse cabs, i think if its not price dependent than you need to demo both and choose with your ears, however with the classics you are getting more versatility and the Made In England kudos. Hope this helps.
Yes, it's quite helpful. I am an ABM user both previously and currently. I've tried the 410 (too heavy for my brittle bones), the 210, and 115. Also the ABMC115 combo, and RPM1 pre. Over here in the US it's hard to get much of an opinion because the Classic cab is not as popular as the ABM or MAG cabs. I am considering getting 2 of the 410 (8ohm) Classic cabs. Will run both thru a QSC PLX3002 (for 3000 watts @ 4ohms bridged). Yes, way too much power but I'll be careful.
  5. Can anyone give their opinion regarding the Ashdown Classic Series cabs? Any tone diffferences between those and the ABM series? Thanks!!
  6. That's a tough call... Evaluate the gear you already have. Are there things you don't like about it? Don't use it enough to justify keeping it? Is it way too much for what you need. If you really don't get the use out of it or am not happy with it it's best to sell it to some other bass player who may get more use out of it. A bass is meant to be played. Whenever I get a different amp I do a couple of things. First, is it a phase I'm going through where one week I want one thing then another week it's something else. Second, have you been wanting or have been interested in this head for quite a while and now you have the opportunity to get it. I say go for it if you can rule out the first point and have agreement with the second.
  7. I have 4 cats. What I did to keep them away from the ratfur cabs is put a scratching post in the room with the amp. It may take a little training but it works. You could also cover the cab/amp with a sheet when not in use. The cats have only scratched the cabinet only once or twice since I put a post in the room.
  8. Not sure when they will be out in the UK but you could look at the Genz-Benz Shuttle 6.0. Price I saw was approx 539 Pounds (I don't have the pound symbol). The GB is 600 watts and weighs nothing 1.70 kg. Also way cheaper but not sure when available is the Ashdown Little Giant 1000 for 325 Pounds. Weight 3.5 kg. I previously had the Eden WT550. great amp but probably out of your price range. Eden has the WTX-260 that's really light but IMO it's not very powerful and not in the same league (yet) as the Genz Benz, EA, etc...
  9.
Earl Faulkner off UB40 had some sub thing that he stood on to "feel the bass". Only a few inches tall. I want one of those. Probably no help to you though, but there you go - the joy of forums.
I think you may be looking for this... 10.
been nagging me for a while so i'll ask here, does anyone really notice the subharmonic generator with it on or do you really need something like a sub cab to get the effect from it? i just figured mine did not much at all.
I use the ABM C115 500 Combo with the ABM210 cab. In a blues/classic rock/soul band I'm in I use the subharmonic generator most of the time. I keep it in the 8-9 o'clock position to just add a small amount of girth to my sound. Does anyone else notice it? I don't know, but I do. It adds something to the sound but most people wouldn't know what it is.
  11. What are you going to be using for cabs? QSC has 2 amps in the PLX2 series that are not bridgeable if you do not need that feature. They PLX1804 runs about 800 watts @ 4ohms & 550 watts @ 8ohms per side. weight is 6kg nice & light.
