2.
The LM2 sounded great just running it with a flat EQ. IMO, that's always a sign of a good amp.
I've got the SA450, which is similair. Just tweek the VLE/VPF tones and it's done.
  3.
Often people misunderstand certain music and label it as 'choppy' when it's actually because they don't understand or can't relate to what it is they are listening to. By learning how to play it you will often find the musical purpose of it. To say " idon't like that because it is too technical" is a big mistake.
i'd personally say it's an inability to relate, as opposed to misunderstanding. I can appreciate why technical playing is needed in certain scores, but because i can't play technically, I can't relate. Also, it depends on what genres the listener is into. Personally, I like slowcore, minimalist, country and blues. Therefore, I rarely see past the root notes that are required. Then for me it's all about how that (often) one note sits between the other instruments.
  4.
When someone posts a vid of some 'impressive' playing, I tend to scroll down so that I hear it, but don't see it.
That's what it's all about for me aswell. I judge on how the bass sits in the song. Length of sustain, timing of root note, dynamics, etc. Hate nothing more than the bass being too prominant in a song when there is no need. Love the bass on "This Will Destroy You", "Spiritualized", "Explosions in the Sky", etc. They always FEEL right. Also love the bass on Van Morrisons "Astral Weeks". Not technically great and sometimes slightly out of time, but feels so, so right....
  5. Also, I've only just noticed the "Lightweight Cabs" thread Maybe i should go and further educate myself.
  6. Thanks all. Some very valid points to consider, especially in regards to speaker diameter and trying out cabs with my amp. I've always been quite ignorant when it comes to the sound engineering side of things and just assumed the bigger the speaker, the phatter the sound. As for trying out cabs, there's not much scope around Newport (Gwent). I would need to go on a bit of a drive methinks.
When you bought the Markbass what did you try it through? Did you like the sound of it then?
I bought it in blind faith after reading reviews. I was after an amp that doesn't colour the sound too much. Think i found what i wanted.
I'd add Epifani UL 10's as well..
Forgot to consider Epifani's. Have read good things about those aswell. I'm guessing i am on the right track in regards to cabs, just need to save the bit extra i suppose!
  7.
Given the styles of music you mentioned, you wouldn't need a 'T'. I think a Midget would do you very well. And if you didn't like it you could easily move it on here without taking much of a hit! And a Compact would not be a lot more expensive!
Good point with the re-sale value. Not sure if I would go for the compact. I've got a 15", albeit not great, but fancied something with a little more top end, so will probably go 12".
I played my first gig last weekend with my RS210 & BH250 head. We're not a loud band and it was a small pub but I had more than enough volume. It was also quite nice to have a physically small footprint. Very pleased.
Yeah, being able to get everything in the boot of the car (VW Lupo) would be a blessing. I was considering getting the BH500 before i picked up my SA450. What's the BH250 like?
  8. If i go that route, I could only afford the Midget or Midget T at best. Also, once in that territory do i go Barefaced, Bergantino HD112/HD210 or Aguilar?
  9. I'm starting to save for a cab to accompany my Markbass SA450. I'm currently using the 15" cab that was part of my old Ashdown EB180 combo (head stopped working, so removed head and cut the head enclosure away). I currently play folk/ americana/country/downbeat/blues/soul orientated styles of music in the band i'm in. Our music is low volumed and dynamic, as opposed to boom, boom, thud, thud Therefore, i'm looking to get a nicely voiced (if there is such a term!) cab instead of a 'Watt-Monster'. I'm thinking that something around 250-400W would be ideal, but also want to keep things easily transportable and relatively inexpensive. Figure in my head is ideally no more than £500 new or £300 used. Cabs i'm currently looking at: Markbass Traveler 102P (4 or 8 Ohm) Markbass Traveler 121H Markbass New York 121 TC Electronic RS210 TC Electronic RS212 TC Electronic RS112 Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  11.
I love them. You still get a very slight "growl" like you get with a round but the bottom end is so much smoother and the balance across the strings feels better. I like bright zingy rounds but I am definitely moving towards preferring halfs, of my three main gigging basses two are now strung with halfs. The recorded tone is lush too. As for feel and tension they give me more what I crave and IMO help my (crappy) technique as they feel "right". Hope that makes some sense :/
Makes perfect sense. I bet they sound great on a jazz bass! I wonder if they are versatile as i imagine, switching between neck and bridge PUP's? Can imagine them giving a good punk growl with bridge pickup and a soul/motown fullness with neck pickup!
  12.
How are you getting on with your halfwounds out of interest? Not tried 'em myself but would might like to.
I'm interested to know aswell. Been playing flats (TI's, La Bella's and Fender 9050's) for last 5 years, but have been tempted by halfwounds.

    Howdy!!!

Hello all, I've been playing bass on & off for about 18 years. Never really focused hard enough to develop into a good bassist, but enjoy playing all the same. I have been playing in a band, based in Newport (South Wales) for about 13 years. However, our band is more of a jamming/hobby session, as opposed to trying to get any recognition, resulting in us gigging about 3-4 times per year. I've been [s]perving [/s]reading basschat for a few months now, mainly the classifieds section First bass was a Kasuga Jazz bass. Lovely thick sounding humbuckers. Tried to de-fret it, which turned out very badly. Second bass was a Squier Affinity Precision. Not a great bass, but served it's purpose.... Third bass was a Takamine EG512C. Loved this bass and wished I never sold it Currently playing a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz. I've modded it with a black Gotoh 2 bridge, black Wilkinson tuners and black vintage skirted volume/tone knobs. I love the black hardware with the black neck inlays. I've played a number of MIM Jazz's (friends/other band members) and cannot justify spending more than what my Squier cost. I'm using a Markbass SA450 and an Ashdown 15" cab. Cannot wait to get a new cab though, just need to find me a money tree first!! Anyway, that's about all from me. I'm hoping that I post as often as i'd like.
