1. Thanks you. I’m really happy with it. Hopefully it’ll age nicely over the coming years
2. So polished the frets and got it all working well. I can honestly say that this bass is great. I've recorded a little demo of it. So this is plugged directly into my audio interface with no EQ, compression or anything. Recorded in logic. Using new Labella Flats. First time round is tone full counter clockwise (0%) and full volume (100%) Second time round is tone full clockwise (100%) and full volume (100%) Third time round is tone full counter clockwise (0%) and full volume (100%) played to the original track Fourth time round is tone full clockwise (100%) and full volume (100%) played to original track The song is Pieces by Luke Tuchsherer. (it's in his backing band that this bass will be used)
3. So the strings, strap locks and pickup cover came this morning. All fitted and stringed up and set up. Played it and realised I haven’t removed the lacquer from the frets yet. So I’ll have to do that before this is fully complete. I’ve only given it a quick play to make sure everything feels right and works as it should. Initial impressions is that it’s good., although playing with a pickup cover is difficult. So next step is fret polishing. After that I’ll put up a recording of how it sounds. So pickup cover on and get used to it? Or remove?
4. Sorry I didn’t manage to get any. I was in too much of a rush to get things done!
5. Thanks guys I’m very happy with how’s its turning out. It’s not a perfect paint job by any stretch of the imagination but it’ll do and to be fair I think it’ll look better once it’s aged and reliced a bit from use.
6. So it’s now ready to assemble, I bought a bridge cover and “ummed and arred” over a pickup one too. Also added a thumb rest/ tug bar for aesthetic reasons too I offered up the neck to the body just to see how it’s going to look I changed the knobs to flat ones instead of domed. I’m now waiting on some labella flats, Dunlop strap locks (on all my basses) and I took the plunge and bought a pickup cover. I’ll update when I’ve got those added them and fixed the neck to the body. Then it’s ready to set up and play.
7. On to the the electrics. The original ones were fine for the job but I can’t help but meddle with these things. I have a bit of solder experience (I build my own effects pedals) so rewired using CTS pots and vintage style wire (note that I dislike this wire as it breaks easily and is hard to strip) I then started looking at pickups. I was lured by bareknuckled pickups but at the last minute found a second hand Seymour Duncan quarter pounder. I bought that and I’ll see what it sounds like
8. Now onto deciding what colour to do the body. Originally wanted to go butterscotch or white but both guitarists in the band both sometimes use there butterscotch or white telecasters. So after much thought and the fact I love the old pastel colours. I started thinking down that route. My precision is Surf green so that was out of the question. So it was a toss up between pink and blue. I decided in the end to go for sonic blue, and compromised that I might make a pink jazz bass one day. So I got down to sanding the body, priming and spraying.
9. Now the thing that I didn’t like was the shape of the headstock. It’s an Iconic part of the tele/ precision bass. So I went about finding a template and cutting the headstock to size. Also the colour of it was very anemic, so I ordered some tinted lacquer. After cutting and sanding to shape I added the tinted lacquer. Then added a new decal. I have a surf green precision I made with a “Franken precision” decal so got one made up for this build.
10. Just thought I’d chuck up a quick build diary/post of the refinish of a Harley Benton PB50. Ive been gassing for a ‘68 telecaster bass for a while, to use in a backing band for an Americana solo artist. I had the idea of buying all the bits separately and assembling but stumbled across the Harley Benton and for sub £100 with good reviews I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. I went for the fiesta red one and when it arrived got straight down to disassemble and strip the finish. I used a heat gun and did a great job of burning the wood but I was sure it would turn out ok.
11. Super Compact for sale! Most people know how great these are but if you don't look up some reviews there wonderful! 14. Digitech Bass Whammy for sale Had this about a year, works perfectly. 15. Been a bit quiet in here lately so i thought i'd pop up a picture of a 2 channel splitter that i have made for a friend. He wants to run his bass through a guitar amp and bass amp at the same time. This took about half an hour to make including the box. Very simple and doesnt suck too much tone! enclosure is a 1590A, and is a clone of the AMZ channel splitter. 16. Funny that this has come up recently as i have been looking at my own hyperdrive and thinking of ways to either miniaturise it or veroboard it to make it fit into an acceptable enclosure size. I use it as an always on subtle bit of grit and rarely change the settings and haven't found anything that sounds as good in this capacity. The input control i never have anywhere but on full so im inclined to remove it and reaplce with a suitable resistor. all the other controls i would like to keep just for the occasional tweak if necessary. i dont want to really mod this pedal just to miniaturise it. Any help would be appreciated. thanks
17. Thought i would finally get round to putting this up. Chain is: Bass > His Lordship (Tweaked DIY Guv'nor MK1, used for distortion) > Ashdown Lomenzo Hyperdrive (Always on just to add a hint of grit) > The Hulk (Tweaked DIY TS808 Tubescreamer, used for overdrive) > Iron Man (Tweaked Civil War Muff, used for fuzz) > Korg Pitchblack Tuner info on the pedals can be found in the DIY effects thread!
18. The mode switch changes the clipping section between red LEDs and asymmetric 1n914 diodes. It's quite nice to be able to swap between the two although its usually set on the LEDs which is what the standard guvnor uses.
19. The final pedal that i have made is my "Iron Man" pedal, kind of got on a bit of a theme after the hulk pedal! This is one of the simpler ones that i have made and is a Civil war big muff with a couple of mods, one to make it more bass friendly and another to remove the mid scoop from it. This is a dark sounding fuzz and I'm still learning what sounds i can get out of it but so far it is pretty good if not a bit bass heavy!! These are all the pedals I've made so far, promised the girlfriend i won't make anymore for the time being! although I'm tempted by possibly a modified rat.. 20. The third pedal image was a Tubescreamer TS808 with switchable mods for increased gain, bass and boost. This one is called The Hulk. This was a pain of pedal to make and get working correctly, i got a dodgy batch of capacitors and used some cheap switches. After learning my lesson and buying some good quality switches it turned out pretty well. It has a great overdriven quality thats not too in your face and it retains the original tone of the bass very well. This one is now a permanent fixture on my pedal board when i need a little bit more oomph although i only use the extra bass switch the others are always left off! 21. This pedal was my second build called "His Lordship" and is a clone of a Marshall Guv'nor with a couple of tweaks to make it a little more bass friendly. This thing is amazing! I got it hoping for a RATM type distortion tone and it fits the bill very well. The mods to add a bit more bass was essential to making this sound great on bass. This has been on my pedal board since the day it was made and i doubt i'll get rid of it. 22. I thought i would start putting up some pictures of the effects that i have made. I only started making these around christmas so still a novice. My very first pedal build was a Wooly Mammoth with a relax knob (so it worked better with my stingray) and bass blend that i called "Hairy Mastodon". Sounds Awesome however i rarely use the bass blend function and found it hard to coax a sound that i liked in a band setting. this one currently sits in a drawer waiting for me to do something with it! The only other problem is from the positioning of the knobs, it makes hitting the footswitch a challenge at gigs, with poor light and a few beers inside me!
