1. I'm still trying out basses over here though.. thought i'd make that clear haha.
2.
If I was you... Bryant is you best bet... there isn't anything wrong with them... my buddy has just got another one and recorded a universal movie few weeks back... So... It did the job... I think he maybe selling his bigger Bryant but I will have to talk to him ! A panormo one sounds nice! Only thing is "wrong" with my bass was - The only thing Rodger Dawson and Sam said was you could use a file on the nut and a the fingerboard planed !! These instruments will serve you well... Just don't fret over it. The basses work
I understand what you're saying Floyd, I'm just going by lots of different opinions. (two double bassists I know, who are both exceptional who both have owned Bryants basses, (One recommended the Jay Haide) the other one said it would be hit and miss. (thats why i'm trying out as many basses as I can) That doesn't mean Paul doesn't make great instruments, just before I find 'the one' I should explore all my options.
3. Dear Bass Chatters, These threads have come up a lot but obviously as time passes new double basses options are available! I'm going through the exciting but painful process of finding a double bass (hopefully that will last me a very long time, I would like to say it would the bass I will be using for the next 10 years minimum (as I'll never see this sort of money when i'm a student). Originally I thought I was going to try out Paul Bryants Soloist model, be completely made up, pay him and been eternally happy. (however this might not happen or I might love it and It will be fine) Therefore I need to try out some more options that are available; The Jay Haide Panorma Model, (probably by Martyn Bailey) seems another good options, anyone got any opinions? The other option a bit more crazy but I have heard very good things about Upton Basses, acquiring one of these basses would be difficult? (Has anyone had one imported from the shop all the way over to the UK) So I could try one? (Brescian Model) http://www.uptonbass.com/Upton-Bass-Hybrid-Semi-Deluxe-Flatback-Double-Bass/ I have relatives who live quite close (10 hours.. in america terms) to the shop, so maybe slightly crazy. I could fly over and try the bass (maybe have a mini holiday as my relatives are there... making it worth while) then flying back. Budget is £5.500. That is the Maximum I could go. I play mainly jazz but still play with the bow, so would like a bass that has the potential to do both well.
4. I am also ready to try it out on Friday, should be great! Thanks for all your help.
5. Great suggestions from all, nice one Hector, Bilbo and dad 3353.
6.
Then its gets more expensive. This is getting good reviews on Talkbass. Its from UK based Headway (£255 at BassDirect) http://www.headwaymu.../product/edb-2/ Do you really need two pickups?
Also Clarky, until I get a new preamp do you think my upright will sound okay going straight into the amp? Did you have any problems when not using a pre-amp with the upright.
7.
If you can make the SE bass bash on Saturday (bit of a trek from Devon I know - see separate thread for details), you could try my MB 121 with your bass and mine.
Hi, thanks for the offer very kind. I unfortunatly have a gig myself on Saturday so won't be able to make it. I know a local shop has just got one in, so i'm going to have to go and try it. I just wanted to know additional information about the amp before I go and try.
8. Well theres two ways to look at this; My Plywood bass (G4M) sounded very one sided when I used just one K&K (bassmax) pickup, I looked at some information on talk bass and lots of people were using two Bass max pickups to balance it. (It's a big difference to the G string is basically unamplified with just one pickup) I also had a luthier install the pick up. I run this into my Sansamp (2x bassmax one on each side) (even though the sansamp has been so useful, turning up to a gig, plug straight in. It makes the bass so very 'electric' It doesn't sound very natural almost very compressed). So i'm looking for a more natural sounding setup. I should (fingers crossed, as long as I like the bass) have one of Paul Bryant soloist basses by the end of the year. (start of next year) depending on when he finishes it. So I was looking for another setup completely. I hear great things about the Realist so was probably going to try that on the Bryant. (I would still need a preamp though) So If I could find a pre-amp which would be useful when I change my setup. I suppose I could connect a microphone with the additional preamp slot? but anyway for now I need a better pre-amp for my current setup. (Also finally i'll be using a good amp so will have control off my sound rather then going straight into the PA)
9. Heres my other thread regarding my setup. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/217357-pickup-and-preamp-helpsuggestions/
10.
Fishman Platinum Pro bass EQ http://www.dv247.com...tic-bass--43699 Steve has one for sale on the forum http://basschat.co.u...-pro-eq-preamp/ There are other preamp options (you own one of them, although it doesn't have a phase switch) eg from LR Baggs and the very simple Fdeck (which you have to get sent from the US by a friendly TalkBass'er). The PlatPro is very easy to get hold of though and liked by many
Awesome cheers Clarky, the only problem is because I use two separate pickups the preamp would have to have two inputs?
11.
I use to have this amp its great, would have liked the 15 tho
Awesome. I did look at the 15 but as the 12 is so much lighter and i'm going to be doing lots of carrying. The 12 seemed the better option.
12. Hi Clarky, Okay great suggestions, I can't find the preamp that you mentioned though, have you got a link? Thanks for clearing up the VLE and the VPF. Can't wait to try out this amp.
13. Great ideas, I've gone back to just transcribing and analysing the records. Hopefully will still keep up with the 'theory' side of my playing too. You're right Bilbo in the fact that the sooner I'm a particular jazz band my playing should improve rather than learning a lot in my practice room.
14. Dear Bass Chatters, I was wondering if someone could offer some suggestions to improve my setup; My double bass setup so far; Double Bass > K&K Bass Max pickup (one on each side) > (Double ended jack to single jack) > Sansamp Paradriver to PA. (Done this for over 60 gigs, great if you can't drive) But now my setup is changing a bit so would like some suggestions. Double Bass > (K&K Bassmax running of individually (each pickup, Gside and Eside) (no joint cable) into some kind of preamp (which can take two separate jack inputs without using a joint cable) then running into a MarkBass Mini CMD 121p (quarter jack or balanced input) I need a particular pre-amp to do this. Anyone got any suggestions? As i'll be doubling up for some gigs, the options to be able to switch quickly from electric to upright would be a bonus. Cheers, Andrew.
15. Dear Bass Chatters, I have finally spend ages researching the best amp for both double bass and electric (of course like everything this is just an opinion) anyway. I have only heard great things about the Markbass Mini CMD121P, I was wondering if someone would clear up some things; Obviously if I was using electric bass, no questions asked I'd plug straight into the 1/4 jack (normal input) When plugging in double bass though how does everyone else approach this? 1 - Do I need a pre-amp? 2 - Can I plug straight into the XLR input? (with a jack to XLR cable? which is the right cable?) - I'll be going through my K&K bassmax pickup. 3 - Do some people not use the balanced input and go straight through the normal 1/4 jack. 4 - What are VLE and VPF filters? (something to do with scooping the mids?) 5 - SPEAKER OUT SPEAKON / 1/4” COMBO JACK (If I wanted to plug another cabinet) 6 - SPEAKER OUT 1/4” JACK (If I wanted to plug another cabinet) (whats the difference between the two) 7 - Tuner Out ( Does this mean I can plug for example my Boss Chromatic Tuner into this rather then putting it in my normal signal chain?) 8-9 What are the return and send effect used for? 10 - What are pre-post equlization control switches used for? 11- What are ground lift control switch used for? 12 - Line Out XLR? (Sending the signal to the front of house) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Planet-Waves-Custom-Balanced-Microphone/dp/B000NP3GCQ/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1379495568&sr=8-6&keywords=jack+to+xlr+planet+wave If anyone can answer any of the questions, I would really appreciate it! I've been using a ParaDriver Sansamp for all of the gigs i've done until eventually I'm in a jazz funk band and big band orchestra which obviously going straight into front of house isn't an option. (Can't wait to try this amp out, been using my Laney RB4 for about 5-6 years and it's about time I had an adequate amp!) Many thanks, Andrew.
16. Jazzers. (only please) Dear bass chatters, I wanted to open this topic to get lots of people different approaches to playing jazz! Anyway more towards the topic thread, after having many different jazz tutors I have seen quite a few different teachers approaches to playing jazz. And still to this day I still find it baffling and frustrating at times. With so many methods and books to choose from, not to mention. The amount of scales, arpeggios, classical books to go through, theory books (Goldsby, Ray Brown, Rufus Reid, Mark Levine, Simandl, i've got them all). (the list is endless) even been through Ed Friedlands book on walking bass lines and looked through all the different approaches; Chromatic Dominant Approach, Scalar Approach. and i've written my own lines and analysed them but I still feel like my playing isn't improving well at least not in a jazz sense anyway Surely i'm not the only one? Anyway another tutor I saw and this has been the advice from different sites Jazzwise etc; Is just playing along with the classic records. (when I started playing electric bass, nearly 8 years ago now. Thats all I did, listen to records play along with them (and my scales and theory side of bass were pretty poor) and if I look back I would say I was making more of an improvement then.) Anyway back to my original point; I'm clearly not listening and intimating enough of the records but surely this would mean I'm only copying the greats, how do people ever manage to make their own great lines without imitating anyone else? How does everyone else approach general improvement?
17. Would you consider trading for a Classical Musicman Stringray? http://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/bass_guitars_detail.asp?stock=13011216410488&gclid=CJ_RwLP_y7kCFaPHtAodQ1QADQ
18. Hi everyone, Yeah it's for college entrance, I have decided on the two pieces (finally) thanks for all your suggestions.
19. Hey, I was wondering if someone could help me pick two good piece. (I keep changing my mind all the time) - 1 Swing Tune. - 1 Ballad. Standard Jazz repertoire. Really need help choosing two pieces, I keep changing my mind. I want to pick a song which is easy to solo over but also easy to play the melody. I don't want to play in anything too common (for example 'Autumn Leaves'). Any advice would be appreciated!
20. https://www.musicalchairs.info/double-bass/sales 1st bass on the list £800, set up and ready to go. Looks like a good starting bass.
21.
Thanks for that ...interesting! I was just talking to Paul yesterday on a luthier matter and that sums it up well . He was saying that he has retired and isn't taking any more orders . He is on a different timescale now and may make an instrument as and when / if he feels like it and has the joy of a list of waiting customers to exhaust with any bass that may or may not come out of his workshop i.e. if you are IBTL then great... if not he seems to be wanting to draw a line so he can enjoy his retirement. I not so sure how easy it might be for Pedro to get onto the list but in any event there seems to be a healthy line of people in front ...so it may be quite some wait !
I wish I knew how many people were on the list. Hopefully he doesn't retire completely before I have chance to buy one. They really are great basses (according to everyone who has one).
