Sorry guys that's a 62 USA vintage reissue from about 1985. The only way to date it is to remove the neck. The 'V' serial number started in 1982

Logo's were always applied over the lacquer on the vintage basses and so they do split, rub off.

I think it's genuine

Thanks P.S.
There is a photo on the listing with the neck removed, showing the numbers 1/16/85 and the serial number on the neck plate looks to start with V.
But I thought the '62 reissues had stack knobs - is this not the case?
Are these series of basses generally regarded well or not and does the price seem reasonable?

I bought one of these, fantastic for the money, £69.

That looks smart - how does it play and is it heavy?

I play with a deep, clean tone, and this needs more power than usual.

I've tried various amps ranging from 100w (valve) to 440w (ss) to 900w (class d)

None have come close to the tone that I get (at gigging volume) with my "overkill" 1800w SS amp

All of these amps can do gigging volume, but it's about the tone.

What is the "overkill" 1800w SS amp you use and what cab(s) do you use with it?
I also play with a deep, clean reggae tone and I'm quite happy with my Markbass LM11 into 2x15" cabs, but it lacks the sheer oomph of a big rig.

4. Hi Paul,

Yes, I think the EBs are quite high tension but the main thing I remember was that they were too bright sounding for me.
They are similar to Chromes and they are my least favourite after Rotosounds, which I don't like at all.
Ideally im looking for low-ish tension and a nice growl but retaining good initial thump
It's the deep thump I find lacking in TIs and P Golds, I put it down to them being nickel but I haven't tried higher gauge Golds yet - sounds like I should give them a go ;)

I find different flats suit different basses and also different styles of music.
My favourites for reggae and soul are medium/heavy GHS, Fender or Picatos, I also have some La Bella 760 FLs to try.
I like TIs or lighter Pyramid Golds for jazz or funk and they're both great for fretless, but the low tension is annoying on fretted bass because I play with a heavy touch.
I also have some DR Highbeam flats 45-105 which are very similar to GHS or Picatos - all great strings but hard on the fingers.

The main thing with all flats IMO is to give them time - they sound and feel better with age.

Hi. I have a JB-20 and a PB-20, both dekos incidentally but both are excellent basses for the money. Regarding the necks, the JB-20 neck is most definitely slimmer than the PB-20 (dont know whether the necks on the PB-20 and PB-50 are any different tho). The JB-20 is 3.7cm at the nut whilst the P is 4cm at the nut.

Thanks - I've got a couple of other questions about the JB-20 -
What is it like weight wise and how is the tone?
I use flatwound strings and only the neck pick up with the tone rolled off for a deep, smooth reggae sound.
Oops I should edit that! Sold it last week, for a bit more than £50 though :P
Ah well - worth a try..

6. Does "modern C-shaped neck" mean thick?

I had a Squier CV Jazz that was described as having a "modern C-shaped neck" and it was slim and very similar to a mid 60s Fender.

The HB PB-50 had a very thick, un-Jazz like neck, I wonder if it's the same neck on the JB-20.

Edit:
Just had this encouraging reply to the same question on TB -
I don't know how close they resemble Fender necks but the neck on the JB models are slimmer and thinner than the PB necks.
Looks like I'll have to buy one to find out :)
