1. i really shouldn't buy stuff off itunes late at night.

the other night for some unknown reason i ended up buying an album of hayao miyazaki/studio ghibli movies themes done in a musicbox style. seriously, who even comes up with these ideas? and why am i admitting to buying it on a public forum?

  2.
Slightly OT but thanks!! I have mewsie to thank for it!! Not sure the rest of the band are 100% happy with having a lefty Bass player as the main logo, esp our Guitard, but *meh*, that's when I put my foot down :)
but he's right handed!

don't worry though, task is in hand along with the other 100,000 tasks you gave me

re: playing, occasionally that happens, usually when i'm playing with Cahoots! but almost never with the as-yet-unnamed party band. (which i am thinking about leaving!)

  3.
To get to the point, do you know what you want to achieve? If, say, you *really* want to be a demon at slap bass then you need someone to teach you that. I bet your man isn't the person for that. Work out what *you* want and talk to your teacher. You may simply agree to part - he may know someone better for you even.
i'd definitely agree with that. i was getting pretty frustrated with my bass tutor until i started playing him songs and burning him cds and telling him 'i'm going to play bass like THIS: help me'.

certainly has changed the direction of my lessons, and i'm more content.

  4.
Mine go flat and start distorting every couple of months but I do play them quite a bit.
mmm, i had that happen with my sterling til it twigged that leaving the lead plugged in was draining the battery. :) haven't had to change it since (almost a year)

    :)

not what i needed to hear, i've been plagued by zombie dreams this week. i've been mostly winning against said zombies, but i'm still waking up quite freaked.

    welcome funkygreega!

    glitter and sequins, definitely.

  7. i have only ever played 2 basses i have fallen in love with over my 2003 sterling. one was some beat up old jazz at the gallery (CK, can you remember how old that was?), the other was CKs alembic.

the jazz just felt and sounded so full of spirit and soul, and the alembic is just lovely, the only way i can put that bass into words is that playing it felt like driving my car does.

  8.
It was a fair question.. I've seen one chap drop his on the floor of a toilet, wipe them on his trousers and put them back in. You wouldn't stick a dirty spoon in your mouth, so why stick filthy plugs in your ears?
its worse when people do it with contact lenses :)

i'm considering getting some custom fit plugs made. with my mysterious ear problems both wearing and not wearing ear plugs causes problems (so i go for wear), have no idea if custom fit plugs will help, i can only hope so. would be incredible if they did.

i guess i'll get me down to an audiologist and get some advice from them. any recommendations for a practice in leeds?

  9.
........you can't snog in the back of a bass.
mmm, can only just about in the back of a mini!

nope, car (mini cooper s) worth more than bass collection. for now.

(robot dog collection still worth more than car and bass collection combined though! must sell robots and buy more basses...)

  10. i go through phases too.

i try and make sure i pick up the bass every day though, even if i'm going through an 'oh god, i'm sh*t at this' phase. (like today!) even if i just play for 5-10 mins and put it down, it's better for me personally than not touching it at all for a day.

all it takes is for a really good piece of feedback about my playing, or hearing an incredible bassline and i get fired up again.

i'd recommend lessons, and finding others to play with, helped me no end. i happened to find myself a VERY cute tutor, too, which is definitely enough to encourage me to pick up the bass and zip over to his for a lesson :) actually, perhaps thats what i need today...

  11. funplex

i'm new to this side of things, so, i want to start playing about with effects, can anyone recommend something i can have some fun with, and particularly something that can recreate the sounds of the bass that comes in at about 0:32 in funplex by the b52s (in the video link above, its at about 0:15 in the actual song). any recommendations?

    ta!

  12. i do name most things actually. my car kind of has a name by default (the pac-mobile, cause of the pacman on the roof), my plants have names, random spiders have names etc, but my basses are simply called 'the sterling' 'the acoustic' and 'the old one' (which i suppose is sort of a name).

the one that i actually did have a nickname for is on loan to me so i have managed to resist naming it so far. if i name it, it has to stay.

however, if i am talking about them to non-bassy people, usually if i want one passing to me, they are 'the brown one', 'the big black one with the hole in', 'the one in the lounge' and 'the spangly orange one'.

  13. aye, a few basic sites we've done recently:

    satsuma nlp
    jevons and siddall
    xander
    brambles special breeds

due to the low costs of these sites, its very much a case of client gets what client wants (sometimes works out beautifully, sometimes not so much!!)

satsuma is our own site til we get a custom site up, v much a WIP, and has been more twiddled with than the others.

  14.
If you're looking for a free, fairly-easy-to-set-up, loads-of-possibilities site, I'd advise something like Joomla.
+1

we use Joomla for a lot of our web stuff, its really simple if you want to simply plonk stuff into a template, but you can tinker with it quite a lot if you want to customise it.
