1.
Yeah we were a bit naughty eh!!

Apologies! - I can understand how difficult it must be not being able to try any 6ers. How frustrating!!! I'm not really sure what to suggest, I guess what ever you do, it will be a case of having to purchase online to try out and hope the return policy isn't too heavy on the walllet.
On a serious note. Trying out by buying is fine, but much more cost-effective if going for 'previously Owned'. I get the old GAS like most, but I really try to buy Used, so if it doesn't work out, then I can move things on at more or less what I paid. Not only Used but also Top Brand. I have had some really nice old basses etc. that after a year or two I have sold for practically no difference. It's like having really cheap rental deals.

  2. I have long been an admirer of the fretless bass playing of Richard Sinclair, since his Caravan days, and most especially with Hatfield And The North. He also sang in a kind of fretless style too! Very Canterbury.

He then joined Camel. He always seemed to use the same natural bodied Jazz Bass. Try finding him pictured with a different one! I wanted to know more about it, as I was after a fretless and fancied getting something like it. Three years a go, I emailed his website and to cut a long story short, I ended up buying his early 80s Fender fretless JB (photo below) that he had bought in Japan whilst on tour. Better still, I met him in London to collect it and got to try out his original which turned out to consist of an ash body made by his dad!

It is a bit beaten up, but is a much better instrument since Jim Fleeting gave it a seeing to. I’ve now added a J-Retro.

  3.
I'm not gigging on Saturday so you can borrow my Ashdown MAG 300 if it's any good to you?
It's in a rack and there's a power lead and 1xjack and 1xspeakon output leads that all live in there as well.
No need to leave anything in it's place.
    Jon
Great. PM sent.

  4. Seems Genz-Benz have a riot on their hands, as the Shuttles are getting feverish reviews and GB are struggling with supplying the equally feverish demand. The one I ordered over a month a go, is not going to be in my hands in time for this Saturday's gig. Carelessly, my spare amp was sold recently to help pay for it!

Anyone local with an amp I can borrow for this Saturday please? It's for my semi acoustic band, so it doesn't have to be very powerful. I will be using my fretless JB with a J-Retro pre-amp, so an Active input choice would be useful. The cab is a Schroeder 1210 4ohm. We are doing it as a freebie for a new pub that's starting out with live music, so hiring is out.

If you can help out but are wondering if you'll see your amp again, I dare say I can leave you with something of equal value as collateral (a nice bass for example). I live in Harrogate and will happily pick up & drop back promptly.

    Ta.

    :)

  5.
My Taylor acoustic bass was once owned by John Entwistle.
Entwistle's collection of guitars and basses was auctioned at Sotheby's in London by his son, Christopher Entwistle, to meet anticipated duties on his father's estate. Joy Division/New Order bassist Peter Hook is among those who acquired some of Entwistle's basses at the auction. (Wiki)

In May 2003, I got the catalogue in advance with the idea of buying one to have as a showpiece on the wall in the Ad agency I then ran. The catalogue is something itself. Hundreds of colour photos of his collection, but the guide prices for each instrument were way high. I even intended to go to the auction, out of interest. In the end I didn't bid or go, but I do have the catalogue to enjoy.

Assuming the gear got sold, there must be an awful lot of ex-Entwistle basses out there!

  6. In the mid 70s, before gear was acquired or disposed of via the internet, there were classified ads in things like the Exchange & Mart, and The Melody Maker. I answered one such ad for a 4x12 Marshall angled cab in Iver, Bucks. It was the parental home of the guitarist from Silverhead http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silverhead who I'd seen a couple of times and had bought one of their albums (16 & Savaged). So not only was I an impressed teenager, now with a beaten up Marshall cab, I also had a bit of hardware with SILVERHEAD stencilled on the back. I thought that was cool!

The Guitarist was Ronnie Wood look-a-like Rod 'Rook' Davies. I don't know what happened to him,but I do know that their bass player joined Blondie, and their charasmatic singer, Michael des Barres, went on to sing with Power Station, though he's more famous for his subsequent acting career in Holywood and for marrying ex-groupie turned author Pamela Des Barres.

  7. Don't think anyone has mentioned these, but please forgive me if they have ...

Hit Me With Your Rythmn Stick
Fleetwood Mac song? (Top Gear theme tune)
    Dancing In The Moonlight -Lizzy
Is She Really Going Out With Him -Joe Jackson
    Psycho Killer -Talking Heads
    Peaches -Stranglers
Yours Is No Disgrace - Yes

And I'm sure there are loads more

  8. In an earlier thread, someone posted that they had an amp once used by JJ Burnel. It got me thinking that there must be truck loads of gear out there that has now trickled down to us mere mortals.

Surely there are some interesting items that are now, or have been at one time, in the hands of BC folk. Do tell ...particularly on how you acquired them!

  9.
I AM SORRY

    BUT!!!!

How do people have the blxxdy nerve to offer stuff for sale like this?

    Above new price!!!

In this case a similar bass is offered at half this guy's asking price at:-

    http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=16271

Is'nt it time that the modulators of this forum stopped newbies from posting for sale ad's?

How about making it possible for only BCers with three stops and more being able to post items for sale?

What say you all - polite replies only please
Yeah, I wish we could all live in communal Hippydom Man, and not have chuffing rules, BUT it does look like we need to put a bit more of a qualifying process in before anyone can post a For Sale item. Mind you, this s a VERY savvy forum and I can't think we have too many members who can't spot a dodgy enticement.

  10. Buy this Washburn XB600 Six String Bass with Seymour Duncan STC-3 Preamp , and get my Harley Davidson Softail Standard 2006 for free!

I understand this is the older model made in Korea before the move to the current made in China production models. It features an Alder body with an Ash top, Maple Neck/Rosewood Fingerboard. The playability is really good as it has been set up by ace six-string bass player/luther, Jim Fleeting, setting it up with a nice buzz free low action with accurate intonation. The previous owner upgraded the pots and preamp with a Seymour Duncan STC-3 Preamp (£130 for the parts alone), and according to the Duncan web site this On board Tone Circuits add tremendous tonal versatility. Enables the player to add to subtract EQ at center frequencies voiced specifically for electric bass. They feature low noise, low distortion and high headroom. Useful for all musical styles and genres.

Three bands of active EQ, master volume, blend, plus the proprietary Slap Switch. The lows are deep, clear, and tight. The mids range from ultra-smooth to punchy and all points in between. The treble control can produce a very wide, very usable response that is brilliant, yet smooth without any brittleness. Pulling up on the volume knob engages the proprietary Slap Switch, a special EQ contour made just for slap-style playing. And it has to be said it totally transformed this bass into a very versatile instrument, it can do it all from straight ahead jazz, to slap funk and aggressive rock.
The bass may look scruffy but it’s a very playable gigging and recording instrument, and the strings are in great condition so won't need changing unless you don't like them.

And, for the price of £9,250, you have this lovely bass with my lovely Harley Davidson Softail Standard 2006. Chopper style, with big fat rear tyre. Bought new by me 2 years old, 4,500 miles, serviced 50 miles a go. Has £1,700 of extras, including mega comfortable Mustang solo seat/back rest (but you can the original dual seat for free too), Stage 1 tuning with Screaming Eagle pipes, solo rack, Harley handlebar-mounted clock and cherished plate (V2 NXN).

As you can see, this is a bargain package, but is priced to go quick. More pics/info on request.

  11.
Modulus don't make a Fender headstocky neck, their 'P' and 'J' type replacement necks or those used on the Modulus VJ have the Modulus headstock design, same as on the Flea bass.

The first few photos you posted have a blurred image around the headstock, the last one posted definitely looks like a Fender style headstock. Shame the photos lack definition and focus otherwise it would be easy to tell.

    Hope that helps!

    Ciao

    Ian
Thanks for that Ian. I was hoping you would help! Hutch is listed on the Artists page of the Modulus site. Sorry about the pics, but the DVD of "Road Tested" is where you can see th whole gig. Here's a clip found on You Tube where this bass (just about) features. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMsVLdeorFc

  12.
most likely a modulus. he lists his kit in this interview 3rd page down
