This is a bit of a long winded way around the problem but.....

I am going to the Mearfest NWOBHM weekend in Slough on 1st June to see one of my old bands ( SYZ) play a spot.

I  have already arranged to meet @Brook_fan at Reading Railway station at midday on Saturday 1st to pick up a bass I loaned him last year when he was in need of some support.

I could drive down to Northampton at some point before hand to pick up your bass  and as long as you can get to Reading station at midday on the Saturday You can pick it up there.

I won't be able to stop and chat too long as the festival starts at 1.30 and I would need to get to Slough to check in at my hotel before going there.

Robbie will be coming up from Hampshire and may have the time to share the delights of reading with you though?

You could all come to the festival to see some sad old rock bands if you wish?😜

    Just an Idea 😊

    Ray

Thanks for thinking this one through, Ray. My friend Steve is one of the guitarists in The Dead Can Wait.

I'm coming up to the Reading area 3rd to 5th June, so it looks like we will miss you by a few days :(

    It nearly flew!

    Cheers,

I am in Northampton, I am happy to pick it up and hold it for you, you know how much you want to come up here and see the first bankrupt council in the country! Northampton, the place you drive through on your way to somewhere better!!

Great, thanks Roger. Are you likely to venture a little further south of Northampton in the next few weeks?  I'm coming up to Woking and Reading this month.

  3. This is a bit of a long shot but...

I was the only bidder on a Washburn acoustic bass on eBay and much to my surprise I 'won' it. The only thing is, it is collection only, and I now live in Devon 😲.

I just wondered if any kind Basschatter could collect it from NN2 6DH and I will come and collect from you if that can be done in the Berkshire, Hampshire or Surrey areas, as I am coming to these counties in May and June.

Reasonable expenses paid or cash in kind (e.g. I have some spare unopened sets of strings).

    Cheers,

    Phil

  4.

For sale: one Bassics BPA-01 studio quality floor pre-amp.  Pre-owned ones don't come up for sale very often but if you want a new one then Bass Direct sell these new for £425.

    20190127_111953.thumb.jpg.07f19547b0d47a8424a1a4feb04078b0.jpg
You can look up all the specs and stuff but the big differentials over other pre-amps are:

    1) it is AC powered
    2) on the floor with stomp options
    3) can take two instruments being plugged in at the same time (like a fretless or double bass)
    4) genuinely studio quality

Then there are the dials that will illuminate when activated ...very useful on stage!
If you are not au fait with these then I can recommend this review by “Bass The World” but there are others out there.

This one was previously used by David Bowie's producer, Tony Visconti (verifiable).  He's still using a BPA-01 when he gigs but this one came back to Bassics because one of the LED knobs needing switching over, and a new replacement was sent because he needed it back fast.  Knowing its creator, Malcolm Toft, I was able to buy it from Bassics.

It is in very good condition but has been gigged, so there are a few minor marks.

  5. I purchased this brand new from a dealer one year ago, after trying it in the shop first.   The tone is so much more full than a traditional 'A' shaped Irish Bouzouki.  The preamp works well and it has a built-in tuner.

Unfortunately, I've been too distracted by my mandolin, so I'm taking a Bouzouki Break.

At first glance, it appears as new. However, if you look carefully there are signs of use. I have attempted to show its condition in these photographs.
The strings are in a very good state and will not require placing in the near future.  The set up is nice for easy fingering and chord playing.  With a strap it balances nicely when playing standing up.

At this point in time, it is collection only from TQ9 6PA, however if I can find a used hard case cheap I may be able to post it.  I can even drive for about an hour in your direction for a handover, if that helps.  'Try before you Buy' welcomed.

It sells for between £633 to £699 online, new. Here is the description you will typically find elsewhere:

  6. *PRICE CHANGE*  Now £1199

For sale: my treasured Pedulla Rapture JJ5 in candy apple red, birdseye maple fingerboard.

I really do not want to part with this, as I spent a long time finding a super-jazz with five strings that I found was special. However, I’m not gigging much and when I do it is for retro stuff that suits a four string. In fact, I’m selling this beauty  to raise the funds to go towards buying a vintage Fender Jazz. First of all, there’s an elephant that needs evicting from the room, namely the buckle rash on the back of the body. I originally considered getting a refin (Pedulla will do it) but I soon forgot about it once I had strapped the bass on, but hey, it is there (from a previous owner) and the price I’m after duly reflects this. Otherwise, I think the photos show that it is in a condition commensurate with its age, so it does have some minor scratches and marks. I have it ensured at a replacement cost of £3500 but now I’ve looked up the new price list on the Pedulla website I think I might have to find nearer £5000 to include importation and duty!

I believe that it was made in about 1996. It comes with the original hard case. The Bartolini’s are great, especially since a very good guitar tech took all the electronics apart and restored them as good as new, though it was necessary to fit a new jack socket barrel. The on-board Pedulla pre-amp is active but with a pull-out (volume) knob to select passive. The controls are Volume/Balance/Bass/Treble. The bass balances well when one is standing and the action is nicely low. The strings were fitted and the bass set up nicely by a pro not long before I relocated to south Devon, but as I’ve not used it much since you will find it very much ready to roll. String spacing is 17.5mm and the instrument weighs in under 9 lbs.

If you can get to (or near) Totnes then you’d be most welcome to try before you buy.  I got it when I was in a band in the south east but since relocating to Devon, I’ve decided to not look for new bass guitar gigs whilst I get more in touch with my acoustic instruments. Trades? I am only really interested in getting a vintage Fender Jazz from the 1970s, ideally a 1973 (any finish so long as it has a rosewood fingerboard with block pearl fret markers). I am also selling a Bassics floor pre-amp.

  7. For Sale: my Archer ¾ size double bass with fitted pickup. I’ve enjoyed this for four years, since buying from a Basschatter, but down-sizing house means I must part with her. Lovely tone, feel and balance. I’ve actually only gigged this once but on a large stage and the pickup worked a treat, as it was recorded from the desk.

The strings are great and will last for many years to come. The telescopic pin is working well, as are all other parts. Overall condition is very good, with only minor dings here and there. It comes with a hard case (not pictured but can supply on request). I upgraded to this from a cheap upright and I can't imagine there's a better one for the money.

Collection from TQ9 6PA or I could drive up from Devon part-way within reason for a handover.

  8. I have attended every show since it began. I visited yesterday and noted the differences. The large hall has been partitioned into zones. The upside of this is the feeling of greater intimacy and less noise spill.

Several repeat exhibitors have downsized their stands. To my mind, this did not reduce things from a visitors point of view. As an ex-exhibitor, I know that this reduces the amount of effort involved to load in and out. Consequently, we all gain because it makes the exhibitors more likely to rebook for the next show.

I thought the luthier demonstration area near the cafe was a great idea. It gives people a place to sit to eat and drink whilst watching something relevant.

Another improvement, albeit a small thing, is the lanyards have been replaced by wristbands and e-ticketing. This is not only more efficient it is also more environmentally friendly.

I didn't attend any clinics or shows but I know these have become a real draw for visitors.

All in all, in my opinion it is an improved show and that we should be grateful for Future to be putting on and allowing a focal point for the bass community.

Anyone had any recent experience with Bass Gear? Have sent a few emails to them but no response at all. Will think about giving them a call sometime but to be honest a bit put off by the lack of response. Appreciate any feedback from other basschatters.

    Hi Alan.

We've checked across all six of our email accounts that are active, and we can't trace you (assuming you are using the name Alan) at all! Please call, or email us on [email protected] we'd love to help :)

I'm afraid we are suffering temporary problems with our server hosts. We are doing some routine maintenance that they recommend but it keeps tripping an automatic block. We are pulling our hair out (what's left!).
I'm sure it'll be sorted very soon.

Meanwhile, the UK distributor of Mesa Boogie has just found us a couple more of these heads. We should have them in a couple of days, along with more of the lightweight Mesa cabs :)
