1. And a little bit sooner than promised. Drilled the holes for the position dots with the help of a drilling template (blablas is lazy..... and a smart engineer). Dots glued in and leveled.
2. Finished shaping the headstock and leveled the top up to grain 220. finished of shaping the clearance as well. Also leveled the fingerboard and sides of the neck. Tomorrow I'm going to place the side position dots and after that the frets can be hammered in, but before I'm going to do the frets I want to make the neck pocket in the body.
3. Made the clearance for the strings at the end of the fingerboard.
4. Drilled the holes for the tuners. And after drilling these holes sawed of the last two bands of the now redundant wood. Made two truss rod covers, one in black and one in silver, later on I will chose which one I'm going to use.
5. It's starting to look like a neck.
6. Finished of the end of the truss rod groove at the headstock end. In more detail. I also leveled the backside of the neck and thus machined the heel of the neck to the (almost) right thickness.
7. Leveled the neck with my special setup. And routed the truss rod groove with the same setup, done this immediately after I leveled the neck because than the groove will have the proper depth along the complete length. And today's result.
8. It was meant as a compliment. I really like this kind of unusual things for a build diary, it's something different from what most people think of when someone is building a bass, and yet it's still related.
9. Family picture of my headless basses together.
10. Made the scarf joint for the headstock and glued it, also glued on the headstock veneer.
11. I've also been toying around with the idea to color the body, that's not going to happen, I prefer the natural look of wood.
12. Made my choice for the woods I'm going to use for the neck: Bubinga/wenge/bubinga, rosewood fingerboard, merbau headstock and of course a iroko headstock veneer.
13. I build the eight and five string in the early 90's before I even knew Tune existed, they are actually my own design. The seven string was build three years ago and the other two were rebuild shortly after I finished that one.
14. The body is done for now, I will need to finish the neck first before I can continue with it. This weekend I'll decide what types of wood I'm going to use for the neck.
15. Made some pickup rings for the neck pickup, the one that comes as standard is to thick for my purpose. For the time being I'm going for the one on the right, a little bit of bling is allowed.
16. My fretless basses. Squier VM - The neck started its life fretted, on my other Squier VM. Westone Thunder I - I modified the crap out of it over the years, I am the first and only owner. De afwerking mk4-5fl - One of my DIY projects, it has a stainless steel fingerboard.
17. Made some holes today on the milling machine.
18. I don't really like the smell of wood dust anyway, but this one didn't leave a impression of being bad smelling.
19. Finishing the outer body contour. Finishing the edges. The result for today's work.
20. Absolutely, I almost felt embarrassed to mention the price I paid for it. The price I normally pay for a top is somewhere between 50 and 100 euros. The knobs covered in five layers of Danish oil.
