I still have my Yamaha PSR21s. Two because Dad had one as well.

Referencing the OP, there's nothing makeshift about them. Because they were released when MIDI was in the transition between advanced wizardry and industry standard, a lot of people by-passed them for fully digital keyboards with samplers and modules. The PSRs were very much a beginner's tool. I still jammed with mine on occasion.

My other guilty pleasure is ownership of a Roland TR606. How I wish I'd sprung for the 808.

    Thanks for the memory jogger.
Yes indeed! The PSS's and PSR's were far from makeshift. I had mine hooked up to a hi fi cassette recorder, and everything I composed had to be recorded Live + a little notation.

How times change? :) Your mention of the Roland TR series drum machines, reminded me of many happy hours in the school music block, with a Roland TR505 and a Casio CZ-101. In terms of resources, that's all we had. Far from great, but as they say, it's not what you've got ...

Thanks for the memory jog also.

I bought one of these recently (along with their single gig bag) and it's really nice. Lightweight and they've clearly put some thought into the strap locations because, despite not being padded, the gig bag is more comfortable on the shoulders than my other cases with thick padded straps. My only complaint is I think they could do with a bit more padding at the base of the case, where the end strap pin would meet the ground. I've added some padding of my own there to solve the issue.
Thank you! :) yes, my old 90's Warwick rock bag's are like that - not too comfy, and the straps have started to come away from the case. The Mono cases (which I really like too) have the extra padding, but they are a bit pricey - however, a £1,500 - £2,000 Bass in a £150 gig bag.. might be about right?

  4. From memory, this was the 3rd instrument I had as a kid ~ after a recorder and violin. I chose to do music GCSE as an option at school in the mid 1980's, and my parents got me this;

A Yamaha Portasound PSS 270. FM synth with a fixed arpeggiator - "auto accompaniment" on the lower two octaves, and some use able patches (Bass, strings and brass). No midi.

In the 90's, I traded it for a DX7 MK2 ~ frankly, the PSS 270 might actually have been better?! :o

  5. I know what you're thinking. This shouldn't be anyone's "perfect" Bass! A Jaydee? Mostly big bodied, weigh just shy of a ton and made 'that' sound ~ popular in the 70's/80's.

And, in theory it shouldn't be mine either. I'm 5"7' ish with short arms and small hands ~ yes, I've heard all the gags. Oh, and I'm not great at the slap and pull thing... B)

But.. she is perfect, for me. Made circa 1986 and still plays the same more than 30 years on... the neck profile, pick ups, active eq, tone, balance. Beautiful.

    Thank you J.D. :hi:

    EDIT: she is long scale...

  6. One more for the road... I once dreamt of owning an Alembic Signature 4. And then I got one. Ah well, that's dreams for you ~ be very careful what you wish for! :(

I have neither the time, £$£$ or motivation to carry on searching for the dream Bass... I have what I need and that's that. :thank_you:

  7. B) spending spare cash on **New** Bass gear was something I used to do 20 years ago, but... always room for one or two new accessories: -

Best value purchase : I will only buy new power supplies for my pedal boards - so bought a new FAME DC-8 from UK supplier for less than 50 quid!

  8. Sorry for carping on... but I think the original OP should get on his pike and fix this thread, otherwise fins could get a shoal lot worse ! :o

  10. Who loves Trace? Me. My first 'serious amp' from around 1994 was a GP7 715 combo ~ a good all rounder to start with. It had built in sprung handles and wasn't that difficult to move around. When the opportunity came up to acquire a TE 1048 cab (which I still have today - but in storage and not used much), that led to a life-long search to find the right head, which not only sounded good with the cab, but with my Basses too. In the end, I've settled on a vintage GP11 AH-250. Lovely sound and plenty of power.

Why? One factor for me was the range - stand alone heads, rack mounted amps, pre-amps, pedals, solid state, valves, and cabs in different sizes and configurations. Brilliant (and British!)

Which models bear consideration? Don't muck about with the GP7 ~ spend a little bit more on the GP12 range; With/without all the bells and whistles. I think the 1x15 cabinets sound a little 'boomy' but that might just be me? Personally, I like the 10 inch speakers.

This. There are plenty of considerably lighter weight cabs around these days - I have one myself. Good luck :)

The SMX is the pick of the heads in my opinion. Cabs and combos generally feel like they're full of concrete so I'd go for a head and a different make of cab.

  11. Well.. I've never gigged.. for 16 years. I started learning Bass in 1990 and played/gigged regularly for around 10-years until a very long pause..... of about 10-years.

A few weeks ago, my brother asked me to play Bass in a group (with folks I know) at my new Nieces' dedication service. If he wasn't family, would I be doing it? No way......!

I think it's worth separating the 1073 into the preamp and Eq sections for this purpose... a lot of the phatness and depth comes from the preamp and its transformers. The eq curves are superbly chosen and very musical... but if you're mainly after a coloured DI without the eq, you may consider something like a BAE dmp unit (esp with Bootsy mod) - but not cheap.

Reducing it into a pedal format is somewhat self defeating as an exercise - as ultimately you want the quality capacitors and large transformers... cheapest would be a GAP pre73, though not a pedal, and no Eq.

As much as I love API gear I can see the tranzformer being dropped soonish - imo the cost and subtlety of such designs are too niche...

That said if price is no object, I'd go with the BAE for live stuff and leave Eq in the hands of the sound guy

Just in case you haven't seen this, here is a link to a review of the BAE 1073 DMP from 2012 >> https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/bae-1073-dmp

I've seen these for sale on-line at £1,260.00 inc VAT

  13. Another Reaper user here.

I'm Mastering my own EP, and I've put together this chain over the last few months, which I thought I would share. All of the plug-ins are stock or Free to download: -

Voxengo Tube Amp (Master Maximizer) > 'Toned' by VLC-audio (gentle loudness) > Baxter EQ by Variety of Sound > JS: Exciter (Reaper) > LoudMax Limiter (by Thomas Lundt).

EDIT: I use compression (ReaXcomp by Cockos) + Ferric TDS (Saturation) when mixing. But not at the Mastering stage...

Good luck and have fun! :)

  14. Yes, in my experience. Rotosound stainless steel roundwound's sound great on my Jaydee Basses.

After a while I changed to Bass Centre Elites (Player and Stadium series) and used them for about 10 years, but in the last couple of years' I've changed back to the Roto's.

They appear to be easier to tune and just feel a bit nicer on the fingers. I don't know? I like the red silks and they're about the same price as the Elites.

I like the look of DR's.. and have a set I've yet to try out. But they are very expensive. I'm going to record something with them on my Alembic ~ and see if they make a good match.

    Same as my first Jaydee.

Can you believe that I had trouble selling it for £650??
That is very strange indeed-y! I looked into getting myself a brand new Roadie 2A ~ with brass roller nut, and it would cost over £1,500. I paid £550.00 for this one in 1992.
Neither of you tempted to buy it back :)
I'm getting gas for these JD's.. something I plan to get in my collection someday.

I thought about it for all of five minutes.. but she's like an old girl friend. We've both moved on - but lovely to see her again! B)

  16. Some **new** photos have surfaced of the first Jaydee Bass I owned from 1992!! A Supernatural 'Roadie' 2A four-string Bass in tobacco sunburst finish: -

She is also For Sale here on Basschat. A great Bass and going for a fair price - complete with all the original 'dings' >> http://basschat.co.uk/topic/313876-fs-jaydee-supernatural-bass/

Good to see her again :)

I'm not too familiar with that amp so I won't comment on any difference in tone between them, but I will say that Allparts prices are not the best. I'd look at somewhere like Karltone or Hot Rox.

Ah! these prices (for a 12AX7 | ECC83 valve) are a bit more like it ... Thank you!

  18. Hello BC-ers : this might be a very subjective question!

At some point, I might like to (or have to) change the valve/tube in my TE pre-amp. The valve I'm using at the moment is by Sovtek.

There appears to be quite a bit of variation in the price! and probably the sound (?) of a replacement: -

    JJ: Amp tube - JJ Czechoslovakian ECC83 / 12AX7 = £12.40

    Sovtek: Amp tube - 12AX7WA / 7025 Sovtek = £16.80

    EHX: Amp tube - 12AY7 / 6072A Electro Harmonix = £24.20

    Svetlana: Amp tubes - 12AX7 WA/7025 tube Svetlana = £30.30

What's your overall experience > What are you using at the moment? Is there really that much difference in the sound?

    Thank you :)

  19. Hello - no such thing as a 'correct' or stupid set up :) .. It's about what works for you.

I owned an LS-2 years' ago, so I'm familiar. But for anyone unfamiliar, here's a link to the manual: -

    https://www.manualsl...l?page=2#manual

"there are a couple of tracks where I would like to play primarily in fuzz bass (Bass Big Muff) and then bring in the +1 octave guitar sound (DS-1 and US600). I can't see an easy way of doing this though that doesn't involve changing over cabling".

Not keen on tap dancing? B) Here's one idea. I might place the Shifter on it's own in the first loop ( loop A ) and then chain > Muff > DS-1 together ( loop B ). Bypass for clean tone.

Or Shifter before the LS-2 (they tend to track better as first in the chain anyway) and then add the distortion?

You have quite a few options...
