- also self-taught;
- first gig also with Aria pro 2 (four-string though..)

Ok gear wise.. I moved onto 5string basses, my first of which was an Aria pro 2 that I found in a local pawn shop & brought it with pennies raised from washing dishes...Funtime's!
The Aria accompanied me at my first ever gig at the ripe age of 17. Sadly, I don't own that bass anymore..

Pedals
I have a love/hate relationship with effects pedals I love them and can't stop buying them and hate them for the same reason. Ha Im a confessed Addict!

Currently I'm using TU2, NS2, Fuzzroucios Rat Tail, EHX Big Muff Pi, Digitech BSW, CEB3, PS3, DD3,EHX HolyGrail +, Sansamp BDDI. And growing...

Nice to meet you all
feel free to ask any me any questions

Cheers

Jim - when you get a minute - can you post your pedal board in the time-honoured BC tradition? :D

This pedal is mentioned in a "Chorus " round-up from 6/05 - and seems to show up very well indeed.. :)

Zoom B3 has some pretty sweet chorus effects on it ;)
I still have a Zoom 506 (probably not in the same league as the B3) and agreed, some good Chorus's on there.. B)

5. Morning everyone

The words 'Classic', 'Lush', 'Rich', 'Dimensional' (?), Glistening (??) and Organic (???) have all been used to describe an effect that I guess we've all used at some time: "Chorus"..

There's a ton of 'em out there - so here's an opportunity to vote for your favourite and share your experience (good and bad) of using them somewhere in your chain!

If I've missed your favourite from the list, please select 'Other' and mention it in the posts.

So, without any further ado, and in true Lillympic fashion.. "Marks", "Set", "GO"!!

SimonEdward

Ps

I own a Boss CEB-3 Bass Chorus, but there's also one with seven tweak-able pre-sets that I'd like to try and another one with something called 'Toneprints' sounds interesting..

Not a fantastic photo, but this is not supposed to be a gear shot.. right?

In the background is the other half of the rhythm section, with some er drums.. and now the all important info;

Jaydee Mark King Signature > Trace GP12XV preamp > into Behringer AUTOCOM > via DI to PA > Trace GP715 combo (monitor)

Slightly more boring but functional iteration of my pedalboard:
Eskimo!! Not boring at all... looks like a fun board to use! I'm a bit old-fashioned.. still got an OC-2.. A couple of questions.. is that a Pedaltrain Jr? also, what's the power supply?? and can you let us know which inter-connects you're using??? Cheers.

12. You know.. I haven't changed a set of strings on any of my basses for at least 10-years! :blink: (I don't get out much).. the first set I bought for my first bass (Aria Pro II) were Rotosound light gauge 30 50 70 90 and I carried on using these, particularly with the JD's until I changed to Elites - mainly because The Bass Centre used to sell them in bundles for less.. or give you a free set when you bought something..

13.
' timestamp='1343681516' post='1753714']
I'm sure this has been covered before but can anyone tell me what wah pedals are good for bass? I will be using it with distortion and fuzz! Many thanks
Hello! I haven't seen the MXR M188 Bass Auto Q mentioned yet.. so this gets a recommendation. I use it early on in the signal path; after my Octave and before my Chorus, which works well for me. (Needs 9V, 100mA power and negative centre).

Like most effects, I start with all the controls at the 12 o'clock position and go from there.. the M188 is certainly one of the more versatile Wah pedals for a stomp-box with 6 knobs, if not the most control-able from the floor. Hmm.
.

Range: controls frequency floor of effect;
“Q” control: adjusts the intensity;
Volume: nuff said;
Decay: controls drop off decay;
Blend: controls mix between wah and 'shimmer' effect;.
Rate: controls the speed of the 'shimmer' effect.

It's not the cheapest - I picked one up in good condition from a popular (?) auction site for £70. I think this model may have been discontinued.

Good luck and let us all know how you get on?

Any chance of some more photos?

No problem! & thanks for the message Greg. B)

These are the pics of my GA24 custom 'Infinity' BASS! (built by J.D. between early 2001 and summer 2002). I also have other pics taken during the build which I will share at some point.

This is the Bass that I always wanted John to build for me, and has nearly all of the elements in the design of almost every range of Bass he has ever built, but it's still unique. Four-band parametric EQ and 11 mother-of-pearl 'Infinity' inlay set into the fret-board. Finished in opaque Black. (No LED's).

A couple of years' before I had met Martin Petersen @ The Bass Gallery In Camden and he had For Sale a really beautiful opaque black-finish J.D. Custom GA24 with Saturn moon inlays. I played it through an Eden Navigator, and it produced this fantastic smooth/rounded sound; had the best action of any Bass I had played, and I really WANTED it!! I would come back with cash after I got paid, and try and drive the price down, or get a case thrown in.. Big MISTAKE!! When I came back.. SOLD!! :angry:

The initial conversation about the build was a little awkward.. I had already owned a Roadie, an MK; had the Classic, and a fret-less and I wanted the Bass to be personal to me. John sent me off with lots of copies of his promotional photos (collected over the years), and I spent a bit of time cutting and gumming before deciding on the design.. I handed over the initial payment.. and this is the result. It took a long time.. but well worth it.. thanks J.D. B)

Thanks for reading; and for all your comments!

I only have 4 (so far) ... They all sound different, they all play different.

In time I don't doubt that my collection will grow, and I will play them all for different things.

As I said many times, I have no high end basses, just basses I like, and that are fun to play ( The hated Fleabass is one of the fun to play ones, and I really like it )

I have NO intention in stopping at 4, and I also have no intention of spending 1000's on one bass ( personal preferences, well, unless i win the EuroMillions ;) )

Use whatever makes you happy. Whether you have 1, or 100 basses, once you're happy fu*k the begrudgers!! ;)
SimonEdward likes this! B)

Also have 4 - all fun to play - and own/play them for different reasons;
I've owned 10 basses in 20 years' and most of the time, they have been sold/part-exchanged for the >next Bass..
Jaydee - Classic Series II:

Personal favorite; always first out of the case; light gauge strings and fantastic tone/sustain.

Jaydee - GA24 fret-less:
The older and heavier the strings (the better!); sounds best when played from the last-fret on the board with only the rear pick-up selected.
Jaydee - Custom 4-string:
The bass that I always wanted J.D. to make, and has elements in the design of almost every range of bass he has ever built, but unique. Four-band parametric EQ and mother-of-pearl 'figure of 8 inlays' in the fret-board. Finished in Matt opaque black color, but oddly for a JD - WILL NOT be slapped!! Just let your fingers do the walking..
Alembic - Mark King signature:
Impulse buy, not to be repeated.. cost a fortune; weighs a ton (and that's just the case!); complicated EQ and never found it easy to just plug in and get a great sound out of.. rarely played. An opportunity missed perhaps (?) or still waiting to be discovered.

Thanks for reading. god bless.

Is this totally insane/stupid or genius?

Basically been thinking if I'm going to start building a board then I should be building to a target... is the above Insane/Stupid or Genius? :lol:
Hello! and thanks for your post B)

I'm not an expert - so just my two bob really.. p.s. I voted 'Insane', partly because there were only three options! :D

Ok. If we put to one side any creative or style considerations, then a major factor in the design should be quality of components to avoid increasing noise (effects units, patch cables, power supply, board etc).. I don't know what your budget is, but I'm guessing that this set up could cost anything upwards of 3-4 grand.. nice if you've got it! A blow if you haven't,

I also assume you have a decent pre-amp to put the effects chain into? If it's decent, it will have built in Noise Reduction, and at least a 12-band EQ. Then, if the front end of your bass has an Active circuit, it will almost certainly have a three-band parametric. EQ.

And you just can't have enough EQ (can you?)

Have you thought about, or tried, putting your Compressor or Limiter units at the end of a chain? Can work well - thanks Shep!

For the record: I use a single effects chain, which might benefit from a loop, and goes like this: -

Active Bass > Octave > Wah > Chorus > Reverb > Delay > Analogizer > Compressor > Preamp > Noise Reduction > EQ > Amp

"Pooh sighed and thought, surely there must be a better way of going down stairs"..

17. ...

This Jaydee GA24 was originally built as a fretted bass, which was subsequently de-fretted! I also understand that the pick-ups are not original, but they still look and sound great. I picked this one up second-hand towards the end of the 1990's.. and it has that distinctive growling tone and sustain (that I guess all of them do)!

General features:

Chrome Schaller machine heads;
Five piece Walnut and Maple laminated neck;
Seven piece laminated body center;
Brazilian Mahogany outriggers;
24 fret Ebony fingerboard - 34” scale;
Hard Nickel alloy frets;
Mother of pearl dot fret position markers;
Two SN2000 pick-ups in polished hardwood cases;
Chrome hardware;
Active electronics with 3 band EQ;
XLR and jack outputs;

Hi, How about some pictures of yours? The fretless GA sounds interesting.
"..Because there just isn't enough JD PORN... is there?" B)

My fret-less, which was built fretted and was then de-fretted! I picked it up second hand in the late 1990's. Also, I understand that the pick ups are not original.. but they still look and sound very, very good!

Hope you enjoy all the pics!

19. Hey! thanks so much for the :crigon_04: You guy's are great.. and for your questions.. so I'll have a go at answering them.. B)
You all have some fantastic basses/effects: "variation is evil: DIVERSITY is good!"..

Bert (BassTractor); loving the basses, and if I didn't like my JD's so much, then I would have all three of yours! question of personal taste I guess..

Eskimo Bassist: "compressor before the octave".. well, I've seen this debated on the forums, and tbh I've never been 100% convinced about the OC-2 - because of the tracking - but, it was one of the first pedals I ever bought (budget midi-bass anyone?), and obviously it does add a kind of synth-like 'growl' to the sound, which is one man's Meat and another man's Murder! I played a version of The Rolling Stones: 'Satisfaction' at a garden party a few year's back; doubling up with the guitarist, and it sounded really nice with it cranked right up! I've heard a guitar play though it, and I think that particular pedal sounds much better on that. I've watched other Octave pedal demos on the internet, and they are all pretty much the same; overall the OC-2 is no worse, and no better..

As for the compressor.. I have the CS-3 on the board and it's staying at the END of the chain (for the time being). It does a job with not too much fuss, but it's quite noisy and I would like to try MXR's M87 @ Stompbox to see if it's worth the £££.
Truckstop: Thanks for your welcome and comment(s) about the Volcano Red JD. It is a great color; has a low action.. and it's got history. The story goes that It appeared on the BBC day-time show: Pebble Mill from Birmingham during the 1980's and was loaned/played by 'The Shadows' bass player of the time. It ended up being sold through a shop in Southend, Essex and I picked it up for a few notes after that.
Jaydentaku: How is the MXR pedal? I bought it 2nd hand off the Internet, only a few weeks ago, and has the classic Wah-wah funk sound. It's low noise - I'm sooooo fussy - and most of all, it is GREAT FUN to use. Highly recommended.

That's all for now: 'see you' out there on the forums.. god bless B)

20. Hello Bassists: Here, there and everywhere! :hi:
