  1. No. I listen to quite a lot of new music.. but not the mainsteam "R&B" and "Indie" acts/bands that the populist media outlets circulate.

Now don't shoot me! 🔫  I host my own music on that orange cloud - whom I've had a marmite relationship over many years'; ring any bells?

Also, (over many years') I've struggled with my weight - but i've found music to be one of the key's - no pun intended. I put on my walking shoes, grab my mobile, put on a pair of wireless headphones and hit the pavement.. not the road - because that would be dangerous (!)

This is compilation No. 11 of eight tracks from mainly new-ish, independent and mostly unsigned musicians posting their music "out there". I'd never heard before; why not give them 30 seconds:-

I've just used vlc media player to convert a file from wav to mp3. It was definitely noisier.

Right I'm a convert to wav files!

If you have VLC media player, and have just been converted to WAV - then you might also like FLAC files? They are a lossless format, which take up less space than WAV.

  3. Yes - I'm an active Bass owner, and record a lot with preamp's / DI's into interfaces (pedals or rack versions). For me, they are mandatory.

Although the EQ's on my basses are comprehensive enough, and the Bass pre-amps run at 18 volts, sometimes there's a lack of gain/headroom.

The only preamp I've ever had a problem with was the V1 Sansamp (20 years' ago?) - which my active Basses didn't appear to get along with.

I had a G30 and active basses and didn't have any issues except that it used to interfere with the radio mikes regardless of what channel I was on

Thanks for letting me know! I see these Line 6 Relay systems on quite a few set up's and was curious............... 🤓

  5. Hello!

I've recently been looking into the possibility of acquiring a pre loved Line 6 Wireless system, from their G-series range.

In the last few minutes, I've been on to Anderton's website (to check the RRP) and noticed the following disclaimer on the G-30; "please note: Line 6 Relay transmitters are NOT compatible with active pickups."

Which is a blow. But begs the question: what are those who have gone wireless using? and/or - is there a work around we should know about?

    Cheers

How does everyone feel about this subject?

I think with guitars you can really tell, the likes of Kemper seem to have killed the valve amp market, a secondhand Rectifier etc is now very cheap compared to 10 years ago.  But I would personally rather have that Rectifier.

I've noticed it a bit with bass amps too, obviously SWR are now worth a tiny fraction of what they once were (although they don't exist now), and even what I think are the best amps I've played - EBS are pretty cheap compared to previous years for the full size rackmount ones.  Not sure if bass modelling is really out there on mass in the same way, but the likes of Sansamp have been used by bassists for years in the studio anyway.

    Maybe it's just me though!

    "The Death Of The Amp"..

I found my amp/cabinet sound way back in the late 90's. It was a David Eden (not "Eden" Marshall) World Tour series hybrid through a 4x10.

At the time, these amps were very expensive and had a poor reputation for reliability, so I carried on using my solid state Trace amps (with a GP12XV valve pre) until I could justify buying a pre-loved WT550 (through a BassChat seller) a few years' back. It's still the right amp for me. Today, I still have everything - even the TE gear - because I can, but haven't played Bass Live for many years' ~ because of poor mental health.

I write and record at home, so priorities change. In my situation, It's mainly about compact pre-amps, and valves (yes!), tone, headroom, computer interfaces and not so much cab modelling - at the moment. But Hypothetically, if I were to play Live again.. a small rig would be essential. FOH would get a DI out, and I would shape the rest. A monitor with vocals and/or soloists would be ideal. It really depends on the wants and needs of the gig.

In the next 10-years, Bass amps and cabinets will continue to reduce in size, weight but hopefully not features or heft! That said, in my experience, 'Class D' amps are/ were not the great messiah many were predicting in the last decade. In general, these over promise and under deliver - in many areas.

Death Of The Amp? No, not anytime soon!

I'm looking for advice and tips on playing ect.

Hello Harry - and welcome to Basschat!

We've all been where you are now - at least once. Some of us are still where you are - but it's now sometime later..!

Anyway, I wrote some words called "7 secrets Bassists don't want you to know". I hope you find it useful?

Three very good albums, but for me World Machine is the one where Level 42 went stratospheric.

Yes - agreed! World Machine was the 1st album I bought on vinyl back in 1985. Of these three, it's my favourite - the writing, musicianship and production is just a cut above the other two..

  9. Yes - I ordered a custom Bass, which obviously I hadn't played before purchasing. I was familiar with the brand, as I owned a number of their signature Basses for many years' before.

The last Bass I purchased on-line (from a popular auction site), I only played for a few minutes when I went to collect it from the sellers' house. It was about an hours' drive away from me, which saved on postage and peace of mind for me as the buyer. It was a Sterling RAY34ca and after several months, I decided that the neck didn't really work for me - and I moved it on, for a little more than I paid. That's the way it goes sometimes.

IMHO, I don't think you can really get into an instrument by auditioning it in a shop. There's way more to it than that. And why limit yourself to a choice of what retailers may or may not have in stock at the time?

We’ve been doing that the last three weeks on a “record it on your phone and stitch it together later” basis... This morning’s one...

Thanks for sharing TrevorR. I'm a bit out of the loop, and haven't heard this song before, but I enjoyed listening to it. A very talented group!

Ps. I know you're far too classy for this.. but have you ever succumbed to temptation and banned your pianists from the low end ??

  11. Interesting post and thread. I grew up attending an Evangelical 'Free' Church (more a United reformed/Baptist hybrid) and served in the music ministry from the late 80's for around 15 years. As teenagers, we had formed a 'Worship Band', and as per other thoughts and themes in this thread, we had our up's and downs.

Anyway, during the offering, we once played an instrumental version of "Cherish" by Kool and the Gang - and the assistant minister tried to look it up in one of the Spring Harvest books.. which was funny, but you had to be there. A rare highlight. I stopped in 2002 and moved away...

  12. I had a ticket to see Level 42 with the BBC Concert Orchestra at the London Palladium - just before the UK went into Lockdown.

Although the show was cancelled late in the day, this was 100% the right thing to do, and a full refund was given fairly promptly.

I'm hopeful of seeing them somewhere on their UK tour in late October/November, so fingers crossed this will happen.

  13. This Signature Bass was supposed to be the one. The one Bass that I'd always wanted to own - and never thought I could. These were the Basses other player's played. And there it was.. in The Bass Centre, Wapping.. one day.. and I couldn't not have it.

But.. this Bass just doesn't sound 'great'. It should be the one I use nearly all the time.. but it's not. It's tough to love. And that's it.

  14. I can recommend the ART V3 - particularly when recording vocals, but it's a decent all rounder. I think one of the problems with sub-£500 interfaces, is that after a while you realise that the pre-amps (never mind the converters) don't quite cut it; nevertheless, what do you expect? 😉 I just checked on-line and you can buy a V3 new for around £80. Well worth it imho. 👍
