1. I totally love my Cort Artisan B5. I mean seriously. We're "in a relationship". Always thought Corts were widely underrated, but they seem to be getting some love now, which is nice.
2. I bought an MXR Microchorus from a nice chap on here a while back. It's primarily a guitar pedal, but works beautifully with bass. Highly recommended!
3.
EDIT: Just thought, you may be too young to remember analogue tape.
You're absolutely right mate! Just saw this after I'd updated the thread - sorry! As for being too young....??? <ahem> I wish....!
4. Think I've solved the tuning issue. Just to be sure, I double checked my tuning and intonation, and as I suspected it's spot on. As I posted earlier, everything I can find on the song suggests that it's in the key of D.... And it is.... if you tune a half step down! In standard tuning with A=440 it's in D# Thanks also for the comments on timing etc., I'm working on polishing it up a bit!
5. Thanks guys! Re the tuning thing - it's bizarre. My tuning is spot-on, and all the info I can find shows the song starting D then A, etc., but you're right, it just doesn't sound correct. Weird.
6. This is a VERY rough mix of me playing the House Of Fun bassline. Would appreciate any comments/criticisms about sound quality, tone, technique, anything really, good or bad! Thanks guys!
7. After much blood, sweat & tears (well, sweat & tears certainly!) I've now NAILED House Of Fun by Madness! I'm stupidly happy about this.
8. Just got this on Facebook... Interesting....
9. Pubs around here pay £200 - £250 for rock covers bands to play 8:00pm to midnight with a break halfway. Personnel in the band is irrelevant. If they're playing originals, then they're lucky to get half that.
10. Definitely on my list of bands I'd like to see.
11. He's a bit good! A mate recently "challenged" me to learn New Born, which I've now done - just needs a bit of polishing! In researching the song, and having the attention span of a gnat, I got sidetracked to a lot of other Muse tracks. Have to say, I really like most of it and CW comes across as a VERY good bassist, and a rather pleasant unassuming bloke!
12.
I still really like Bass Player
Freak.
13. Can't directly help mate, and I may be WAY off target, but talk to Mark at Bass Direct - he might be able to point you in a good direction.
14. Consider yourself unshamed!
15. Thank you! I thought it best if people could drop it into a DAW and have a play around....
16. The attached file is me playing my version of a bassline to the Elvis Costello song Oliver's Army. If you have any audio software you should be able to slot this in and see how it works. Or not. Interested in all comments, good or bad. Tell me about the sound, the tone, my technique, anything at all. I should explain that this is my Cort Artisan B5, everything flat, EQ off. Just the natural bass tone straight into a recorder. Thank you!
17. I can work out the part ok, I have the tab (sorry Doddy! ), and I know the song inside out. I think my technique is pretty good - all four fingers, all the time! I'm just finding this absolutely impossible, and it's incredibly frustrating because it doesn't "sound" that complicated! Fail!
18. There's got to be an easier way???? Seriously, been trying this for the last couple of nights (probably about 8-9 hrs in total), and I can't even get the first 4 bars!!! I've NEVER come across anything this frustrating! "Rythmn Stick" was EASY in comparison! So, question to those who play it: Any tips/tricks? Surely there's got to be something I can do? I've seen spotty 14-year-olds on YouTube play it with three fingers FFS! HELP?!?!
19. The Ashdown Perfect Ten weighs more than an average 2-bed semi, so I'd assume the 5-15 is even heavier. Brilliant sound though, absolutely lovely!
20. Just about to start working on House Of Fun. Wish me luck!
21. From my perspective, this is the crux of the matter: There are ONLY two types of bass player. Those who can slap, and those who can't. It doesn't matter if you can slap but choose not to. It doesn't matter if you have decades of experience with the greatest names in music, or if you're 12 years old and have just picked up a bass for the very first time. It doesn't matter if you play with fingers or a pick, play jazz or rock, old classics, modern, pop, prog, rap, whatever, IT ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT MATTER. You can either slap, or you can't. This automatically creates a division, "us and them", those who can and those who can't. And with any division comes elitism. And with elitism comes envy, jealousy, derision, intimidation, superiority, inferiority, frustration, fear, anger, etc. Those who can slap look down on and demean and patronise and condescend those who can't. Like, "Is that it? Is that all you can do? Come back when you've grown up and learned to slap like a real bass player." Those who cannot slap are afraid of and intimidated by those who can. "I have absolutely got to learn this technique. I have no use for it, and no interest in it, but no one's gonna take me seriously as a bass player unless I'm good at slapping." I believe this is why slap bass generates so much strong feeling.
