well, your hands is a good place to start.
specifically where you pluck/attack.

thumb/palm mute/ flatwound strings on a P is nearly always nice.

going the other way tonally P with Pick can't be bad

Sadowsky Pre-Amp is a good buy for a Fender. It don't do a lot but what it does it get done well.

two weeks ago I put a light flange on a track while pumping 8's with my thumb. Quite full and the space it takes in the track is sounding to me at least, right on.

so it is possible to play instruments that despite being , say 30 years old , have very close serial numbers.
4 years ago I got to play three '76 P Bass , less than a 100 digits apart and I think it would be a very brave player to say one year is better than another.

also the 1 I bought might be complete pants for the next player. The individual and the instruments "quirks" can seldom be quantified let alone compared to any definitive A/B system.

I think you have to play before you buy, unless the purchase is solely a financial "investment".

I use EPS160's (105E) on my Jazz
and Chromes, again with a 105E on my fretless and P Bass.

the Chromes are quite lovely, not cheap but smooth goodness.

Boss-ODB3 as well for me.

takes a lot of experimenting to get it right, but the blend function is a winner and I think it handles the 5 well.
and get a regulated adapter for it. what a difference that made.

I like the palm mute approach with Pick on some slower soul numbers.
and yes it is always important to mention Anthony Jackson.

I like Dunlop .60's and rarely the .88 for a bit more bite.

I have been playing Bass Guitar for 20 years, writing songs for 15, gigging and recording them for 10, playing on others records for 5, just started Piano lessons (15 months) which is a lot of fun, doing some Jazz classes, starting singing lessons which coupled with the Piano lessons I hope to drastically improve my ear.

My rig is an Ashdown, first one in NZ apparently (?) ABM 400, ABM 410H , ABM 1510HX. February '98 I got it. I think!

'76 Maple neck Precision, L2 Steinberger, '71 Jazz. I don't really have a favorite, it just depends on the day.

I've got Chromes on the P Bass and the Fretless Jazz, smooth city.

I tend to use a Sadowsky outboard pre-amp with the '71 for a bit of hi-fi sizzle...
