  1. It struck me that on a vintage-style bass, such as a 62 RI precsion the riveted reverse tuners look right, but I avoid them because they turn the wrong way. My MIJ 62 RI has 'CBS era' style tuners, so loses some brownie points on authenticity, but at lease they turn the right way. Wouldn't it be nice if a company (hipshot?) made authenic looking tuners which turned the same way as all other tuners.

Also on my list would be a set of hipshot 'lollypop' tuners for a CIJ mustang bass (inc D-tuner) which look like the original 1966 fender ones.

Any other bass stuff not available to buy, but you think it should be?

Reminds me of a story a friend told me. One of his friends was in Soho square and spotted Van Morrison on a bench reading a newspaper. Not knowing any better, he went up to him & told Van how much he enjoyed his music and would he mind signing an autograph for him. Vans's response was to lower his newspaper, look the poor chap in the eye and snarl "F**k Off" then raise the newspaper :)

That'll be the weatherstrip used for the mute giving off gasses as it disintegrates causing a reaction in the nitro.

  4. Good luck to John's family who are making money off these, but anyone who buys ones of these for the Entwhistle name is a fuggin' idiot. Unless they are nice basses which fill a requirement. I can see bass players in low budget Who tribute acts falling over themselves to get one of each model.

  5. That brings back memories of my first amp - the head was an Ohm very similar to this, but for some reason it had a [s]spaceship takeoff emulator[/s] flanger instead of the much more sensible compressor. I used it with a big 1x 15" cab with Fat Freddies cat painted on the grille.

  6. These have been on my Stentor Student 1950 (standard 3/4) bass for a while, but as I hardly play it, the strings have not been used much and are in very good condition. They've been put on & taken off just once and the red and purple silks at both ends are still neat & not at all frazzled.

  7. Since I had the j-retro fitted at the same time and I can go from Marcus kicking over a bucket of spoons to bowel opening dub without touching my amp eq its hard to say how much is actually due to the pickups, but they seem to have a wide frequency reponse - I have a passive danelectro and the low-tech "bung a load of coiled wire into lipstick tube" method of construction does seem to give an extended frequency response at both ends of the spectrum.

  8. I do a fair bit of rockabilly and what some might call country. I use flatwounds thomastiks and usually take a my mustang or Epi thunderbird pro-v, although I have been known to use a precision, ns upright or ashbory depending on the gig.

  9. I ownder whether they use focus groups or ask informed gigging bass players what they want?

It looks like it has the typical useless Ashdown 'deep' switch and the eq looks confusing and clunky. I'm sure more people would prefer a compressor/limiter built in, perhaps even a knob to add sansamp-style valve-sounding grind and maybe something [s]ripping off[/s] inspired by the MarkBass magic EQ knobs - the VPL & the STD or whatever they're called.

I can't get my head around the point of the custom control panel - is it like apple engraving iPods to prevent people returning them if they change their mind after hearing it :)
